However, when I said he was overstepping, I meant that he is running the risk (political) of making a lot of apathetic McCain voters reengage (which is good) and making those that voted for him think twice. He never looks at the crowd or questioners, but they have his teleprompters positioned so that he moves his head around to appear "natural". The camera men have to get there early & work out angles to make it look like he is directly addressing a crowd instead of just reading.

For those who are really dense, look up the transcript of the conference.

If you read the followup questions you will see that they are based on the presidents answer to the reporters original question.

The reporter cannot know ahead of time what Obama's answer will be. Thus, Obama cannot know ahead of time what the follow up question will be. Thus no teleprompter could be used for those questions.

Look at the video of his press conference. There are no teleprompters scattered around the room. Look at the reporter who sits near the front when he asks a question. There is no teleprompter anywhere near him. Watch Obama as he answers. He never looks up past the reporter. The only teleprompter is way up in the back of the room.

When the Irish prime minister came to visit, they accidentally switched the cue cards and the p. minister started off reading Obama's cards. He realized immediately they were switched and let Obama read his cards. Guess what? The cue card people switched the cards AGAIN so that the prime minister's cards were in front of Obama.
