Love this early New Order, in their Joy Division phase. Seriously was'nt till a year or so later that they found their own style and Barnie stopped being Ian Curtis. Saw them a year later at Futurama 4, a festival literally on an ice rink. Saw them in Glastonbury 87, when they were so tight, but at that point there seemed little point in going on as the raw energy had gone! Also love old footage as it is not taken by an arse in front of me on a digital camera.
I wish I had been there! I heard this song on L.A. college radio station KXLU in 1981 and it changed my life. I didn't know about JD until '82 unfortunately. I heard Procession last week on the same station for the first time in 28 years! It was erie...
yep! the ticket was my 11th birthday present from a seriously cool uncle. he drove me down in his day-glo green vw camper that was wallpapered with pages from vintage playboy mags. new order played my favourite tune of my teens too - the him. and yes - barney was WASTED. i always thought that hooky was saying to him "gerrup yer pissed twat" right at the end of this clip. legendary. my uncle tried to get me to watch hawkwind as well. fuck that.
@deejaybee ...man that's cool...all I know as a kid growing up on this side of the Atlantic was that you guys had something special going on over there. How exciting to see New Order at a festival like that in their early days. The word festival was lost on us Americans at that time....we didn't really have an annual rock festival until Lollapalooza. Cheers.
Yep - I was there too - at the tender age of 16 and a huge JD New Order Fan - this was actually before they had released anything- I remember watchin Hawkwind too - with ginger baker no less - It was 6 pounds for a ticket that year!!!
I remember Hawkwind being so quiet i could barely hear them. Only one stage and the likes of Gordon Giltrap and the Thompson Twins when they were a political collective rather than posing popstars, and yes £6 a ticket. tell it to the kids these days and they wouldn't believe you!
Shambolically beautiful. Hooky looks rather sophisticated here, compared to his more recent goofing around on stage with low bass and baggy clothes. EIther way new order blow the majority of stuff out the water for me.
Barney looks so yung and insecure, and hooky looks out of place with that suit. Gillian looks worried when Barney falls. Lovce them, wish i was there.
I don't know. I think I'll always remember Hook as the well dressed/groomed bassist that kept his back from the audience. It's funny seeing him both before and after this period. Love the collar!
I'm a big fan of New Order and really like this song on record, but unfortunately some of their early live performances like this one were pretty amateurish.

@TheMonsterXavier: I've got a bootleg LP of it and, frankly, it's very bad .. although I do admit that this video is highly entertaining ...

It sure took them a while to find their identity after Ian passed. They were all so young.

It's not the fact that you fall that matters, it's how well you can get back up again that counts....

An incredible performance during NO's young & early days as they began the transition from Joy Division. I didn't know Bernie had it in him.

I was there but can't remember it, lol. I can remember Chicken Shack though, which is, perhaps, a bit sad

Really wish I'd seen them in 81 - 82 rather than in the later years.
I'd forgotten what drew me to them but I can see it now.
Thanks for posting this.

I was at this Glasto gig. Barney was pissed out of his head, they were shambolic but kinda great anyway. Nice lasers?
Anyone else there in 1981?

Damn right, pal. I've never seen Hooky in suit either, although he has worn smart trousers and shirts at several gigs.
Apart from that, great clip. Love it when Bernard falls over! What a wally!

He's obviously on something...he was never confident on stage at that point i don't think.

Well, if this was Glasto 2008, I doubt this would make BBC3 edited highlights. More's the pity.
