I know usually in traffic they turn off the sirens, but I think a couple blasts on the air horn and the phasers could have really moved traffic along here.
I know usually in traffic they turn off the sirens, but I think a couple blasts on the air horn and the phasers could have really moved traffic along here.
there are guidelines set by the dept for siren use. calls are divided by priority 1 to 7. if it's a 6, guess what, lights and siren when crossing intersection.
We have a dashcam recording the entire run. We can verbally state the license plate number, vehicle make, description, markings and driver description and sign a complaint.
The police serve the registered owner who must go to court. We have the video to win a conviction - if the driver can be identified.
@robertgift I love this type of reply. Register owner is NOT responsible for the action of the driver. A simple it wasn't me driving will get ticket dismissed. My car is register on corporation just for this purpose. Are you going to try to ticket the corporation? hahaha good luck trying to id him/her.
@robertgift Robert what normally will happen is register owner will get a letter that basically says you been busted for so and so and please do not do it again as it is against the law. I have gotten such letter before from state police and that is the end of that. So basically i am speaking from experience.
Based upon my complaint, police delivered a citation (ticket) to the owner. (He was the driver.)
He was compelled to go to county court in a city inconvenient for me to get to.
The prosecutor called me.
He recommended that I not bother showing up in court.
The case will be dismissed.
The driver, being compelled to court, all the while worrying abouthe outcome, and having to make the time and travel to court, would be.nough punishment.
@robertgift Hehehe got you i guess it's true for poor people. I am rich so i would just send my lawyer. Yes it would cost me some money but i can easily afford it. I forget that in NY you can't do trial by written declaration.
@ylen13 Had the accused hired an attorney, I would have gone to court and won a conviction. The driver would have 4 points on his driving record, and likely a big fine, maximum, imposed by the judge who would see the video in court.
I would also have informed the press, who would like to do a story.
Would cost driver attorney fees and travel, and fine and four points and newspaper article. Doubtful thathe prosecutor would have plea-bargined the citation to a lesser offense.
@robertgift From all of your replys you still haven't said how you would id the driver? Register owner is not required to provide the information, the lawyer for sure would not give it. As you mentioned the register owner is not responsible for the action of the driver. A lawyer would have this ticket dismissed. As for the press i always love get bad/good press...it's always good for business.
@ylen13 Correct. If driver is not registered owner, and one cannot prove who driver is and have him served, then driver gets away with it. Only losses to registered owner are attorneys fees and possible bad press. Bad thing about the bad press though, is that someone, I would not knowho, may flatten all four tires of the owner's vehicle(s) on more than one occasion. Or key the vehicles.
next time you need an ambulance fast for a family member I hope they get stuck behind some driver who won't move..you'll be the first one who bitches about it..loser
you can't get through traffic if no one knows your behind them, next time turn the sirens on thats what they are there for duh, and yes i am a firefighter/EMT
In communist China and there is an escort (VIP or official) u don't move out of the way. The leading vehicle will open their window and throw a bottle at the back of your car.
you know, when it's gridlock you realize there's nothing you can do...even the ladders can't get by sometimes...in time, the more high priority jobs you respond to, the more your adrenaline adjusts itself. I don't curse drivers out as much anymore lol.
hence why we don't use the siren...I work on that unit (08-Adam located just southeast of St. Patrick's Church) during the day...you have no idea how bad it is...beautiful truck though, especially at night :-)
they should have the right to bump the cars i think

Idiot cabbie on right pulls in front of ambulance. Moron should get a 4-point ticket.
Hellfighter, they probably had their siren on and everyone already knows. When everyone knows, why keep blaring the siren?
No, Timrusty, no reason to have any lights on if not an emergency.
What? They're afraid they'll get rear-ended?
Other than that moron cabbie, people DO try to help. But there is little they can do in near gridlock.
Other routes a possibility?

Siren is worthless when vehicles cannot move out of the way.
In such cases, I briefly sound the siren to alert everyone to the emergency vehicle trying to get through.
Once they know, no need to keep the siren blaring.
When other lanes are full, I head down the center.
That makes it easier for vehicles left of center to move left and those right of center to move right enough to open up a passable pathway.
Sounding the siren sparingly is effective and greatly appreciated.

@ylen13 That facthathey were annoyed and compelled to court is enough.
Also willikely get the driver talked to. And records may establish who the driver is.
The registered owner, if he knows who the driver is, need not reveal who the driver is.

they're probably on a low priority call, lights are only used as precaution...no siren is authorized. FDNY has strict directives for siren/light use.
