Hey Supercat. I was at that Concord 2000 show too! I was able to go backstage after the show (I luckily had a pass) and I met all of the guys in the band. Each member autographed my Masterworks program. Very cool. Jon is quite short! And Chris is huge. When I shook Steve's hand, I was afraid to break it (it seemed very fragile...pardon the pun). I was in a Yes tribute band at the time. Lots of fun!
I was at this concert, Concord Ca 2000. As well as the night before in Reno where they played Gates for the first time since 1975... one of by best musical experiences ever. I miss the real YES. God Bless Jon Anderson.
Ein nächter großer Song der Jugendzeit. Yes. The Gates Of Delirium (ALbum: Relayer) Live gespielt, Part 1.
I love it when they stray from the studio version. It's like a special treat when it's live. It's like hearing it for the first time again. I do love improvisational music.
@27svideos Get real..there isn' t any band under the sun that sounds the same live as they do in the studio..except maybe Rush..but they proved to suck a long time ago..a pity really .
Has anyone ever figured out the meaning of this song, or any of their songs for that matter. They always use big complicated philisophical words that never seem to make sense when formed together in sentence or the songs. I have always been a big fan but never gave the lyrics much thought back then in the 70's because I was soooo high on weed and it didn't seem to matter then.
@hifiguy9 - My interpretation of all the YES stuff is basically 'Hey human race, wake up and stop the aggression and hate and learn to care about what's important.' But everyone has their own take on the meanings. What does it mean to you??
To me Jon's a true minstral helping the message of 'Love' to keep on going around until people hear it and live it.
I understand where you were at in the 70s because we were all there too. ; )
@ASeasonedWitch YES I agree they do have a positive sounding message even though it is philisophical to the highest degree. By the way, they are performing tonight in my hometown of cincinnati ohio for the July 4th festivities. All for FREE! Unfortunately it is a sweltering 95 degrees out and I cannot stand the sun for that long. :-(
@ASeasonedWitch (also @hifiguy9) I can dig that interpretation, but for me, as a musician, YES music is all about glorious arrangements, heavenly melodies and sweet beats. I try not to look too deep into the meanings of Jon's lyrics; to me they create abstract images and feelings. Can't comment on being there in the 70's as I was born in '81, but a bit o' weed never hurt the experience ;)
I was at this show and it was great. "Gates" has always been one of my favorite pieces of music. I had my doubts that they could pull it off after so many years, but they really pulled it off. I saw the same show a short while later in Hartford, CT and it was just as great.
I saw Yes' first concert in the US (Seattle); they were the backup band for Jethro Tull, and were called back for so many encores the announcer had to come out and remind the audience that JT was waiting to play.
@nnylg unbelievable and guess what? back in 79 or 80, can't really recall right now but it was in Boston, "Yes", was the event and" Police" was the backup band, good history for the 70´` and 80´´
Seen Relayer in Buffalo, Detroit, Toronto. 3 shows in 2 wks, when it was new. Anybody remember Roger Dean's brother sculptor's tri-headed hydra laser beam spewing serpent?
this was the first tour i saw yes i saw them in camden new jersey a few days b4 this show they played so fuckin good they were on top of there game and played all of there greatest songs they were on fire but then after this tour i kept goin to see them but it just wasnt the same it seemed like they slowed down alot i dunno wat happened but nonethless this was a great tour and they were on top of there game
The thing I remember about the Masterworks Tour was how high the bass was in the mix at the shows. You would have thought that Chris was mixing it himself! I love his playing, but the mix was ridiculous.
On keyboards he must certainly be Mr. Igor Koroshev (Russian Keyboardist who was on tour with Yes sometime. - I saw them in México City (that was their first visit to Mexico, and Igor Koroshev played keyboards. - After all I believe The Gates of Delirium is their best master piece, before Close to the Edge.
With time, I've come to the conclusion that Relayer might be their best album all around. Musically it's amazing. Steve Howe is ALL over it. It's the proper "bookend" to CTTE.
no - Igor Koroshev - played on Open Your Eyes and The Ladder. Dismissed after this tour and prior to the recording of Magnification after an incident on the road where groped and allegedly bit a female security guard at a show.
That's rather amusing...especially for a member of Yes! I'm loving these Masterworks shows as YES seem to be on top form and looking better than their usual dodgily attired selves! Liking the darker stage too...their most recent shows have been way too light. Anyone know how/where I can get a copy of this whole show? Thanks. Ged.
Goood... every time I listen to Yes live I wonder how do they do it? I mean, their music is so complex, and they play it almost like in a studio mix... Amazing band.
The intro GRABS ME each time & ever since the first time I heard it in 74! I knew from those few notes that GATES was going to be an amazing listening experience and another incredible YES tour-de-force!!!!!!!!!
I saw them play this the opening night of this tour in Reno. It was an amazing experience. Plus I had the honor to meet Jon, Chris and Alan before they took the stage. I still have the mp3 of them playing it that night. They stumbled on some parts but it was still awesome.
I can almost remember the first I heard the opening to this song on vinyl. It grabbed me instantly. I knew at that very moment this would be a monumental musical experience! Sitting in my freshman dorm room highly medicated ready for the journey!

0:00-2:10 is Beginnings
2:11-8:00 is Tension
8:01-15:48 is War
15:48-21:50 is Peace
This, of course referring to the full length of the song, 21:50.
