Scofield was a great actor who gave a great performance in A Man For All Seasons. Burton was a great actor who gave a great performance in Woolf. Somebody has to win/somebody has to lose.
The director should also get the credit for getting out the performance from his actors. Huston made a hash of it in the 'Night of the Iguana' for example.
No one really mentions it, but George Segal as Nick is really spectacular. If you just read through the script without having any preconception of the acting, it's very difficult to know how to play the character without illustrating a conceited or pompous young man. He did a really great job.
Aw shit, Sandy just sneezed on my left arm. Double shit, now the right. Before she sneezes on my thigh, she played a mighty convincing drunk. Foster Brooks would have dropped to fhe floor. Course, he would have have have have anyway.
It's a travesty and a robbery that Richard Burton didn't win the Oscar! He most certinley deserved it, and for the truth to be told- Burton's preformance was alot better than Scofield's. Burton is a ledgend, and alot of people today don't even know who Paul Scofield was. Who else thinks Burton should have won?
I think Paul Scofield is a good actor (Funnily enough, he was in another film version of one of Albee's works -- "A Delicate Balance) -- Anywho, Burton in this film is about as good as it gets. He and Liz were dynamic.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Dennis through a friend. I was in her company about three times. A friend that I worked with was very close to Sandy. I went w/ my friend's son to pick up Sandy & take her back to the friend's house. When I stood in Sandy's kitchen I got to see all her cats that she so loved! She was a lovely, down-to-earth woman. This was when she was sick so I was quite and didn't say much. I loved her acting style..thought it was so natural..I know it bothered some.
SHRINA17, Ms Dennis' style was certainly her own. What I always thought was so natural about her was that she didn't try to be glamourous but chose to be convincing instead.
Think how this film would have suffered if Honey had been played by some bimbo.
mthivier, re his being a flop: that wasn't George Segal (Hi, I'm miss Statestheobvious).
I remember lengthy discussions with a director on whether Nick was actually impotent or just drunk plus not really attracted to Martha, but just trying to further his career. I thought it was the latter; Nick was a bastard. George Segal on the other hand: mmmmm.
Date monitor? Hm. I took my boyfriend to see the film and his reaction was "What a great marriage they have!" He had a point.
Too right, George Segal was hot! Hell, I'd still do him now. Chance'd be a fine thing ;) Let's not forget by the way, also an excellent actor. Somewhat overshadowed here of course, as is Sandy Dennis's wonderful job as the irritating and rather dim wifelet.
MoonGlow, he was indeed hot! But I wouldn't have done him then; when this film came out I was more concerned with learning my ABCs.
But if I'd been the right age and was aware of his existence, hell yeah!
mthivier '...no wonder Martha kept coming on to him all night' Erm. Sorry to be boring but Martha did that because it was in the script. When I played Martha, I had no control over who played Nick.
@queenastilon Sandy did play a bimbo haved you seen the movie she's drunk for the whole thing! JEEZ get your facts right

apparently he screwed too many Hollywood producers wives over the years.
I think he was nominated 7 times and the bastards never gave it to him.
rh7onda7 3 years ago 2
Did he really screw their wives?
BillyL96 3 years ago
yes he was a legendary philander.
I just finished reading "Hellraisers" by Robert Sellers (well worth a read) and he says in the book that this is the reason.

George Segal was pretty hot back then...no wonder Martha kept coming onto him all night.

Hell yes! She did him, too! This movie is a good date monitor. If ur companion likes; thumbs up. If not, out the door.

But, in the words of Martha, "he certainly was a 'flop' in some departments". LOl. Definitely agree about it being a "date movie"!

yep. and anyone who has ever been in a dysfunctional relationship can relate to this as well. Multi-faceted. Love it!

Hey, do you know if there are any movies that George Segal was in when he was younger where you see him shirtless?

Martha resembles 'Roxy Robow'(spelt Robot),from Bunnerong Rd.Paargewood.(1980's)
