interesting how, with all lecture dealing with 'patronage', reactions are filtered so that only those in perfect agreement with the lecturer are heard.......i will post my video somewhere else.
Amanda, I loved your speech. I really hope more artists find a way to earn a decent living through the internet (besides other means), as it's such a great means to reach a broad public. Things are still uncertain now, but I think that initiatives like yours and the others you've mentioned will in the end be a solution. I wish you (and Neil Gaiman) lots of success!
I love the idea of buying music when I know it goes right to the artist. 'Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under' was available as a nearly free album (like 1$ or something) but knowing what she's trying to do as an artist and as a person, I felt the need to just pay like I would on iTunes or Amazon ...
Artists should have more faith on their audiences, if they are good, they are putting their hearts in their work then they'll always find people to support them.
There's this terrible balance struggle with the internet, that line between free samples and virtual five-finger discounts. 8 times out of 10 I put my money in.
I have a masters in music business and I work intimately with the issues in the music industry every day and I agree with Amanda 100%. If artists/fans/music business professionals would listen to this and believe it then we could finally move on and enter a new age of art + profitability.
oh wow, this was a really great speech. VERY well put. you are such a real musician, Amanda, and you seem to be a very amazing person. i hope that for years and years the audience will keep giving you dollars so you can keep making your music. i know i always will. :)
I agree with you in saying the artists don't like asking for money,
I'm a street performer working on Grafton street and Temple Bar and Dublin, I began busking because it was impossible for me to get a part time job, but I believe it is one of the hardest jobs there is, it shouldn't be seen as begging, but no body wants to pay for music any more, I come home with less than 10 euros a day, it's an incredibly hard job, but I don't think I'd have it any other way =]
I am a struggling independent musician/songwriter from Indonesia
and there's often times when I'm wondering if my "music dreams" seems to be all 'wasted', especially in this "music-for-free" era, that surely would confirm my parents & pragmatist society's views even more that being a Musician is "useless" because it doesn't have any BIG MONEY in it.
But after watching ur video, I've felt that ur words struck my heart so deeply
@nikiwonoto (continued) that ur words struck my heart so deeply, and telling me that it is indeed really WORTH it to continue my pursuit, no matter what happens.
indeed, it is that 'one-on-one' human connection that makes MUSIC (& Art) so BEAUTIFUL at the 1st place,...and I feel that the whole society & 'music industry' now hopefully could get back again to those 'real patronage' scene like u've mentioned...pure appreciations of arts & its beauty for able to touch & inspire hearts!
just beautiful! So simple a thought made so inspiring. Wish we can all get back to when people had those connections like you had experianced as a living statue. Thank you, I love to hear about people just being human.
If not TED, then this would also be an applicable talk to give to any sort of aspiring artists. Maybe at Grub Street, the writing center in downtown Boston?
Who else wants a double bill of Amanda Palmer and Andrew WK doing some spoken word or a lecture series like this? All those in agreement throw the horns: \m/ >_< \m/
I will surely do the italian translation of this video. I will also ask to my german and french and espanish friends to do the same and share it anyway is possible.
Many thanks Amanda to be here and let me tell you a very, very original thing:
I love your speech, love your outfit and your hair with that healthy red glow against the light. You're not bullshitting people, that's rather rare. Yes, you'd be the first person for me to save during a fire. My brother would come next...who is a surgeon... so. Just continue doing what you're doing. Please. Thank you, Amanda.
Well said the only person i like asking for money is my mum. my band are doing everything ourselves and i think we are starting out on the internet lol cant wait till your back in london :)
Amanda, you speak with such conviction and true insight, and I am continuously inspired by your music and your words. I am so grateful that you are who you are, because you've changed my life just by being honest and courageous and beautiful, inside and out. Thank you for this :)
Amanda Fucking Palmer, I love you. Thank you for making amazing music and for being such an amazing person. I just finished writing an essay on how you and other musicians are using the Internet in relation to the music business. I got an A - so thank you!!! xx love Ailsa and New Zealand!
I just want you to know that I've spent a lot of the past year thinking about how I can use the internet as a young playwright trying to connect with an audience and with other artists, and your work and perspective has been hugely helpful. There are big differences between theatre and music that are going to take a while to account for, but THANK YOU for helping me sort this shit out. Also, for making fucking amazing music. I love you.
I play on the street now and then (I don't have to pay the rent with it). But I never made the link to internet. I love the way you presented this idea.
Besides that. I like every women who playes the ukulele :P
Wow. That was incredible. What I'd really like to see though is a condensed version of this on say an email that gets send to you after you purchase something from Bandcamp, just so you can know what you've been a part of.
Brilliant. This speech captures exactly what it's like to be a busker. So much slander, but the love you get from some people is amazing. Some days you really do get to touch some people's hearts.
Oh, Amanda, you are one of the MOST productive members of society, in my opinion. You have inspired me & countless others, and I have changed for the better because of you. And I love you. :]
