This isn't their first appearance. The first time, they demonstrated every card sleight in the book at lightning speed, and ended with a dagger impaling Penn's hand, and catching Dave's selected card at the same time.

@timharrod No..The first time Penn and Teller went on Letterman, they both came out, sat down, Penn put his hat on Dav's desk said a few words, Teller stood up and started doing lame trick like pull ribbons out of his sleeve etc. Dave said "that was the worst magic I have ever seen." Penn Said " I insulted, come on Teller." They stormed of the set. Dave said " take your stupid hat with you." When he picked up the hat hundreds of cockroaches spilled out of the hat. Dave ran into the audience.
