How much one learns from the artist's calm, delicate handwork. I never knew about the bending techniques -- such exquisite control this person has, over every tiny element of the total result.
Perfectly done and I was taken back to 1992 when we had 19 of Enshu school teachers in our city. At that time all 19 of them did the same process! Really Wonderful!
An update : The thing in the vase is called a Yagen. Yagen is used for crashing oriental medicine by 180 years ago in Japan. It ismade of wood, and used for Enshiu classic style of ikebana, instead of kenzan (needle point holder)
What a beautiful arrangement! Truly a Master's work. The bending techniques are amazing. The "thing in the vase with slits" is called a Kenzan. Normally needle point pin holders used. Only it is slightly different. Maybe because of the material used. And the vase is also considered.
I've learned some technique from this video, thanks of posting. Though by breaking and bending cherry blossom branches, I'm afraid the arrangement might not last a week.
Absolutely wonderful, the techniques and the symplicity...

I did not fully comprehend what he did with the first carefully trimmed stems. Did he graft them together to make the center tall stem--the heaven?

It is called "Yagen-kubari"or simplly "Kubari",made of magnolia obovata.
Usually, there are two types of kubari. One is the three long slits and another is five slits in it.
It should be fit of each caliber of vase by way of cutting and curving to be steady.
you can choose one depend on what kind of materials you use for an ikebana work.
And also you may make any style of ikebana , not have to care about the weight of bending some branches you want to do, because of using it.
