  • Thanks for this. Our cable is dropping analog real soon so I need to get a card that will read digital cable, I think we have "QAM clear channel" stations? I just learned about that. A lot to know.

  • 1) Media Center is free.

    2) What if you have a HP Pavilion g7 Notebook?

  • An 'old computer' to me, in this is instance, implies one you don't use anymore but have lying around. Nice vid.

  • If your voice is too low, you should turn the music down.

  • How to make a DVR out of an old computer for free

    1. Put your computer in the closet

    2. Drag out your VCR

  • if you have XP Media Center Edition, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate, 7 Premium, 7 Pro, 7 Ultimate you dont need MediaPortal

  • @Macintosh3745

If I'm not mistaken, you need the Windows 7 MCE to tune QAM channels.

  • Lol I have a VERY old pc with a 2.5ghz processor...

  • @stabilini it doesn't matter the hard drive, it matters if you need the computer.

    vote up if you agree

  • I have been doing the same thing for many years. It is very easy to do. Right now, my son has an old 1.8 GhZ Celeron running on WinXP. He uses it regularly as a PVR/DVR and it does an excellent job. Not only that, he can use the computer for other tasks at the same time.

  • I found it a little strange that you never actually showed a television program playing. Home come? Aside from that excellent video. 5/5

  • a computer is out of date a soon as you buy it so ther all old

  • this is the most un-true statement i've ever heard ever.

  • @Logansfarm not if u build a pc, u will be so far ahead of the curb, for half as much

  • lol. that's not making DVR from old PC. lol.

It's still regular pc and many peeps already hav 1 lol.

  • he says tv card about a million times

  • scary music

  • A few weeks ago I couldn't believe my luck that I inherited a Gateway GT4010 PC with 2 GB of RAM, a 200 GB hard drive and a AMD 64-bit and Nvidia GeForce 6100 graphics card. Had a bad OS so I got it free. I installed windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version and upgraded to 4 GB RAM, much as it can hold. And this guy has pretty much the same PC and is calling it an "old" computer, only suited to us 3/5th human peasants.

  • theres Orb too

  • If the computer works and you dothis can you still do normall stuff

  • Comment removed

  • where did you get the card from?

  • That's not old computer.. an old computer runs win 98.... and that software doesnt run on old computer... you are running the hungry vista.

At 5:04 you can see it's a 2.6 gHz PC... that's not an old computer... maybe 1.5 or less could be old

  • some people see something that isn't top of the line as old... everyone has their different views

  • I have to disagree at the rate hardware is evolving hardware that us close to 2 years of age is old.

Boxes that run can only run windows 98 are considered ancient.

  • @stabilini yeah but its probably a shitty dual core lmao

  • @stabilini im not sure how you know that its vista cause windows 7 kinda has the same theme

  • @masterhand129 I've posted my message a year ago, and the video is from april 2008, when windows seven didn't existed

(my statment will become false in a couple of years... )

  • @stabilini In this day and age. as soon as u buy a new computer and you go home, its already old...

  • @stabilini haha what an ass... when he said "old" I think he meant a computer that's not his main computer anymore.

  • @stabilini Old computer as in one that you don't use or is slower then the machine you have....

  • wow nice but i really wont a pci who can stream or transmit on rf on a local cable network as a modulator of rf or something like that be nice

  • dude you go the same computer as me ;D is it from 3b tech

  • When Ever I Get To The Part Where The TV Tuner Is Installed And I Do The Channel Test It Does The Fuzz On One Then When Its About To Give Me Picture For Channel 2 It Gives Me A Blue screen With The Name Of The TV Tuners Drivers In The Problem, It's Basically Telling Me I Need Windows Media Center Edition Of XP.Should I Install It? Or Is There A Solution To My Problem For XP Professional?

  • well there is a few problems first unless you have a nice graphics card such as "top of the line HD graphics card which run $50-$700( reliable ) then the quality of the video will such so using an old computer needs to be removed and to be able to use a remote then your going to need more software and or if your computers old or new you will need more hard ware the remote hardware is expensive and the software can be expensive and the free versions arent all that great. so pros n cons put out

  • One problem. That isn't a very old computer. It's running friggan vista.

  • it was an example

  • it is possible to make xp look like vista

  • someone has too much time on their hands lol well i do too so its all good lol

  • dude, your awesome you know everything

  • i have directv, will this work?

  • yeah

  • It should, however, there could be some added difficulty going through a set top box as far as channel changing...but it should work.

  • Thanks!

  • it's nice but if you just want to watch TV you might as well plug your cable directly in your TV lol.

  • Is there a way i can hook up my tivo so i can still use the service on it. But save the recording's to my PC?

  • that was awesome but i cant understand why you use this new vista pc?

  • does it matter?

  • No.

  • Nice video. I've been using orb but I couldn't record any show. Now with Media Portal I hope I can do it. Thanks.

  • nice! looks like anyone can do this... well most anyone........LOL check my site for how cable gets fixed Up.

  • How well does this work with pre-y2k computers?

  • That video was cute. It&TBPSQUOs nice to see these kinds of videos once in a while. Lol

  • Wrong video?

  • Does it have to be vista? i don't feel like getting a new computer i don't have the money for. Will it work with a computer from a grage sale ? (xp or 2000 or 98 possobly 95 but probably not much lower

  • do you have another vista comp?

because you can download the restore disk onto an xp or classic

  • i oubt it will be powerful enough

  • id love to have a TV card in my pc then id have hours and hours of TV shows on my machine, i have a 1.8 ghz CPU and windows XP home sp2, you can access your TV from over the internet? can this be done on a sony PSP console? if i just get the card and install 2 pieces of software then to hell with sony's locationfree base but then if theres a power outage u cant watch tv but with locationfree u can just run it off an inverter box

  • you can watch TV on PSP if your PSP has CFW with 1.50 kernel support

  • i dont feel like bricking my psp just to watch TV ill use locationfree

  • uhm... If you have CFW you wont brick it... lol

If you have Phat, install 1.5 kernel

If you have Slim, get a app called Eloader. No brick worry

  • i have latest FW on mine 5.02 on a psp slim 2001 I updated it hoping if get full flash support so maybe i could watch youtube on my PSP but nope sony is still whacking off and not bothering to update the flash player on the psp

  • how do you update the flash player?

  • i dont think u can i tried doing it on the adobe page but it didnt work sony needs to get on this, maybe if we get enough people who want youtube on a psp then maybe sony will make it happen

  • Nice video. This is a project I need to try out.

  • great vid..

  • orb also works with the wii

  • love your video thanks for thr tips!!!!

  • Why does it have to be an old computer? You can do this with your current one.

  • hi i have an old computer. 50 MB of RAM, 15GB of HDD, 100MHz processor running Windows 2.0 and 12k modem speed.

Do I have what it takes or is my computer still too good for just using it as a DVR? I mean this PC is still good. It runs minesweeper at OK speedz.

  • i think ur comp has to be abloe to run win xp adleast

  • no it cant, it has to be at least a 300mhz processor

  • if i did this would i be able to record from my xbox onto my computer?

  • You will need a capture card and a vcr for that.

  • how can i record from computer to t.v vhs, vcr?

  • can u save it on your computer?

    Please reply

  • would I be able to watch TV "live" from a computer over the internet? or would I have to record the show first to be able to watch it?

  • would it work with high definition?

    I would think not?..

  • i think it will

  • bravo! great intro tutorial.

  • Will the Orb software coflict with Media Center and it's functionality?

  • no. Aside from the server application, Orb exists purely online and not on your computer.

  • @gigafide is that a custom built pc

  • As long as the old computer meets the minimum requirements for Vista, like this one does, then there's no problem running Vista on an old system. All of this works on XP as well if the computer doesn't meet the minimum Vista requirements.

  • Nice vid- good work. Stupid question- will this setup allow you to watch Internet (like youtube clips) ON my television? If not, what do I need?

  • what about an external tv tuner

  • As long as it's recognized by the programs, then they'll work the same. So if you have a laptop, USB TV tuners should work too.

  • yo u beast ur vids rock!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey, i have an old Win 98 that is running a 300 MHz processed and 256 mb of RAM, do you think i could do this?

  • u wouldn't be able to run Media Portal, but u could probably still run Orb and the TV card.

  • dude thats awsome genius

  • cool
