  • What did you use to make the effects?

  • @ Ryan Wieber

    7:20

    That's a Rachmaninoff Prelude, isn't it.

  • @ZappyZeus As I mentioned. 5 days ago. ;)

  • just a question, do you know if travis is working on 9 in the evening still?

  • Rachmaninov Prelude as the music piece, correct?

  • Which camera did you use??

  • @Werda1136 most likely AfterEffects I think there might be a tutorial somewhere on how to do it

  • OMG fbtravis

  • you should all check out VaderVault if you want your own custom saber , unless Ryan sells them too .

  • Hey Ryan, how did you combine your two sabers into a double saber?

  • Comment removed

  • Wait when was RvB2 shot? How long ago?

  • I really loved watching the dual blade combat, hope to see it again sometime. Thanks for yet another awesome video.

  • I can imagine a group of kids surrounding you as you rehearse

  • If you ever make a third one, you should do saberstaff vs. dual wield.

  • work with frediew and make a movie! lol

  • man the Novus Lightsaber is still out of my price range :(

  • So let me get this straight, You pain-stakingly roto all the lightsaber movement frame by frame, and not tracking??? I'm doing Post production at University, I want to try this in Nuke.

  • Where did you get the sound effects from?

  • Very interesting to see! I only today found out that the final version of RvB2 was up; seems I missed it by a year :( But I was very happy and impressed with the finale and the edited product! RvD3 or RvB3 in the works? Or RvBvD? Or basically anything? :P

  • i love the work that goes into these and the attention to detail. that is what separates the artists from the technicians... fantastic work.

  • Thank you for the look behind the camera Ryan. I learned so much by watching this. Is there a good copy of Ryan vs. Brandon 1 on YouTube? The one I've seen seemed a bit lacking in video quality.

  • @BattleRogue yeah it was shot on a GL-1, so it doesn't really get higher quality.

  • What program did you use for rotoscoping?

  • @Wind1000100Movies Adobe After Effects for the visual effects. Except for our roto supervisor Nate Caauwe, who rotos in Silhouette, last I checked. That's the timelapse you see toward the end here.

  • Your dad is awesome.

  • VERY talented. i sure hope you got money out of this. awesome work guys

  • @HomicidalNun666 Can't make a penny off of the film itself. We try to play it safe and not buz Lucasfilm's tower too close. We use their sound effects, and ripped off the soundtrack from iron Man.

  • What is the Frame Rate, etc, etc settings did you use to film the video?

  • @JonandSamTV 24 frames per second mostly. A few shots were shot in 22 and run at 24 to make it a little bit faster (mostly in the part where I have a saber in each hand). Standard Panasonic Gamma-V, but as you see at the end, with a nice color correction job by Brandon.

  • Okay, so you get those red sticks and put a lightsaber effect on them... but what when the saber turns off or on? Can this sticks fold or something? I mean, if they didn't, then a saber that's turned off would look like that red stick, and that would be even more problematic when showing a saber turning on or off.

  • @DarthKamci0 Well the blades are removable, but you can still edit the blade out with masking. Basically you have a picture of the background and place it over the blade very neatly to create the illusion that it is not there

  • @DarthKamci0 For shots where they turn on or off, we simply remove the blade prop fromt he handle, and track the effect on for the shot.

  • @RyanWieber How do you "track the effect" because I have always wondered how in a scene a lightsaber can activate because you can't have the blade in.

  • I'm a pro-wrestler in downtown Sacramento, and I just wanted to say. You guys are amazing. Thank you for sharing your behind the scenes.

  • Great job! Very entertaining. I enjoyed seeing how it was done very much.

  • What would you recommend for a material to make the blades out of?

  • @MalcoreBattlefield Carbon fiber is the best stuff around. I sell CF blades on my website sabershop, com.

  • Question for Ryan: Out of all the lightsaber styles you've used over the years, which do you prefer (single saber, dual-wield, or double-bladed/staff)?

  • @FirebirdFreak87 The double (staff) saber is a lot of fun.

  • @RyanWieber Ah OK. How hard is it to dual-wield lightsabers? I heard it's pretty hard to do (certainly looks harder than it looks).

  • @RyanWieber How did you combine the two blades? Screw? Twist-on?

  • a word to haters: the dislike bar is at zero lets keep it that way

  • very cool, keep up the good work gentlemen

  • ryan dude you left us with the clones and now you got me thinkn you should win once by having dorkman and brandon face all your clones

  • 8:34 = 9:10

Looks like Lightsaber vanishes on finished product

  • @dlonewolf69 Yes, it turns off as it flies away, then it turns back on once it is grabbed again. You can hear the sound effects for it turning off and then back on.

  • @RyanWieber Now i know you might have answered this before, but if you don't mind, what programs did you use to make the lightsaber blades themselves? They look so crisp and clear. I am working on a multimedia project for my highshool business department and wanted to give something like this a shot.

  • @RyanWeiber what program you use or how did you make the lightsaber effect

  • how long did this take you from right at the start to end?

  • How do I get lightsaber sound fx?

  • @jaisako google it

  • thumbs up if you used to make lightsabers out of pvc pipes when you where a kid :)

  • Lads, the starwars movies are not even that old and your battle was way cooler and better looking then in the last 3 newest episodes! i bet your budget was a bit smaller then lucas's...

  • Loved the Rachmaninoff prelude you used ^_^. Awesome stuff.

  • New objective added to bucket list: meet u guys and possibly beg to take part in one of ur films to be.

  • Thank you for sharing, this is an insightful look into the logistics behind a production gem.

  • TALK SHIT ABOUT THIS GUY... I FUCKING DARE YA. DARE YA... U PUSSY.

  • Genious videos!

  • after see this, i'm became scare if their sword is stick not laser

  • I DEMAND RvDvBvT Ryan vs Dorkman vs Brandon vs Travis

  • You should get an offer from LucasArts. Ways more creative and much-much better duels you guys make than what I see in any SW episodes. I bet you also didn't spend the same money :)

Congratulations, hope to see you guys dueling soon ;)

  • Also, how many frames do you typically include the burst shape in when the light sabers touch?

  • @blastborn One bright one, one smaller one.

  • @RyanWieber What cameras did you say were used? How much did they cost?

  • @BaldurdashWoW RvB2 was shot with two Panasonic HVX200 cameras. RvD2 was shot with one as well.

  • @RyanWieber Also, where did you learn to use photoshop and after effects?

  • For your last "clone" shot, would it also have been possible to record with a stationary camera and animate the the footage in post production with a 3-D camera move on the foreground?

  • @blastborn No, you can't artificially force a 3D camera move without recreating everything in the shot in 3D.

  • your videos r awesome:)

  • I love your videos. Are great.

The choreography is amazing and the sound effects are great.

Congratulations! I subscribe to your channel:)

  • Fantastic work guys. By far the best lightsaber combat, camera work, effects and overall "feel" out there. Please keep em coming I can't get enough!

  • @RyanWieber sorry name spelt wrong. But refer to previous post.

  • @RyanWeiber when is the next one commingle out, kinda an open ending.

  • @BlackMagic58000 Dunno yet.

  • 3:45 = Win

  • What kind of camera is that?

  • @TheArtisanAlchemist Panasonic HVX200

  • Rvb Was good but to me no

  • Where did you learn how to film and post produce?

  • How do you "improvise" without stabbing the other person's eye out if you miss?

  • You should make a sequel to those short six in the morning star wars movies. I think that's what it's called. Ryan, Dorkman, Brandon, and the other guys should return to. I always liked the 3 in the afternoon star wars movies.

  • How about a curving metal rod that you could attach the camera to, like a small roller coaster. Then you push it with force from a high height, and it can go under someone's legs or around them in interesting angles. You could use a lightweight camera like a Flip.

  • Love your guys lightsaber fights. Makes me wish i knew or had friends who knew how to make those videos

  • What do you do for when sabers clash? also with when they are in a continuous clashing and sliding together (effects)

  • how did you make the effect when you cut of the saber at 9:25 ?

  • A touch of brilliance! Absolutely marvelous!

  • RYAN VS. DORKMAN 3!!! 3:57

  • You guys rock brotha. Great, GREAT job on this. You didn't some really cool chero by the way :-) May have to use that in some movies :-)

  • RyanWieber your a don!

  • What did you guys use for the silver blades? I would also like to get some for a project. Thanks. =]

  • @jedimastergarcia87 We used carbon fiber tubing. I normally sell it at sabershop, com, my site, but at this moment I am restocking. You can keep an eye on it over the next couple months though.

  • the rotoscoping for the sabers must be so tedious/time consuming

  • Whats the software when you talk about rotoscoping?

  • @NiallHornProductions Adobe After Effects. or in the case of nate Caauwe, I think he uses Silhouette.

  • Dude you rock! My friends back in school love your vids! Especially the STAR WARS Club. It's amazing that you were able to give the visual effects to these vids like they are in the movies. Please keep making cool vids!

  • бля они гениальны :D

  • guys i love it great work but let me ask you this.is there going to be an RvsB 3?because if it is id like to see an 2 on 4 battle and id relly like to see youguys go all out this timeit would be epic

  • This is awesome, you guys do great work.

  • @RyanWieber what was the red stick/ tube that you used in the original filming (before editing)

  • @elli0t0t Carbon fiber tubing. I sell it on Sabershop . com but I am not taking orders at this moment while I am changing manufacturers.

  • i have a ton of questions but dont feel like asking xD

  • you sound like seth macfarlane. haha

  • @1991MRjesse Really? I don't hear it at all.

  • @KingKool2099 well, perhaps i just listen to too many family guy commentaries.

  • Well Said,Master Wieber

  • And Your rigs are Amazining

  • Please can you make a vide about the matrix camera rig i am inspired to make on i have bilt a sky cam and now i want one of these!

  • Will there be more fights like this?

  • @tbate1999 lol He doesn't lose he always wins in a way. His clones make it so he always wins. :)

  • Dude, you have got some mad, amazing skills...on camera and off. Thanks for sharing another amazing and entertaining video. Can't wait to see the next installment.

  • you got to hate the GEMA... another great video is blocked in my country because of music-license bs... =/

(a great video... for the 2 times I've been able to see it before it disappeared from my network)

  • i love your dorky ass. there should be a like and a love button lol! seriously though, innovative, love it.

  • I have an idea for if/when you do Ryan Vs Dorkman 3. You should try adding some Force Lightning/Electric Judgement (along with more Force powers.) I also think you should at least tinker with the idea of dual-phase lightsabers, not to be confused with double-bladed/double-ended lightsabers (the blade length would be doubled, but there would still have the same number of lightsaber blades coming out of the hilt/s.)

  • where do u get the lightsaber hilts

  • Very nicely done.

  • Travis! He did awesome Lightsaber stuff, too! 6 in the morning etc.

  • i have a question why do you always lose? im just asking

  • I'd love a diy video of how to build that spinning camera rig. Seriously, you could market that thing to hollywood! Also, I want to see the next one shot on a Canon 5D. George Lucas would piss himself. If you need a camera operator and feel like flying me out to wherever you live...

  • Stellar work guys, look forward to more!

  • wait... Travis, from 6 in the morning, works with Ryan, Brandon and Dorkman?

Where the hell am i when people know these things?!

  • Why does Ryan always die? He died in RvD,RvD2,RvB,and RvB2

  • @awesomerage34

We got a clone shot at the ending of the movie, so we're probably going to get an explanation for that.

  • hey what camera did you use to shoot. and what program did you use to edit. And last question. is it better to shoot in HD.

  • Where do get the stuff to build the spin rig? Or how could I make one?

  • Wow! I didn't know Micheal and Brandon had ever met before. But yeah, I understand what you mean when you said you sped up that one part when your in a bladelock with Brandon and he whaps you in the face. I'm guessing because of the long bladelock already that happens a couple of minutes later, when you back Brandon downwards onto a table. I can see how that works out.

  • hey ryan jw if u used multiple cameras when filming or if u continuly cut the shot

oh no i c wasnt finished the vid

  • 0:45 I like how they're practicing in front of an elementary school

  • how do you get lightsaber sound effects please tell me

  • thanks for behind the scenes

  • Hey Ryan, Can you please explain in more detail how the whole clone effect works? thay would be great thanks

  • Your brother's Half-Life 2 shirt is full of WIN.

  • Where did u get the sound efx from?

  • Wow, the rig totally beats ducktaping a camera to a remote control car. And yes, I was dumb enough to try such a thing.

  • It's a leica...a f***n' Leica!!! I love it!

  • Jesus They are professionals. Let's think about another episode like... Dorkman and Brandon fights and then clones of ryan appears. Dorkman and Brandon must fight together to survive xD

  • Really innovative stuff. I like the motorized lego dolly prototype and how you just manually turn that 360 rig of yours to keep it in motion!

Thanks for this behind the scenes video, they're always interesting.

  • This is awesome. You're very lucky to have the possibility to build such equipments. I was really amazed by the camera spin rig. To be honest, while watching RvB2 I had no idea how the effect had been made.

  • I definitely knew from the first time I saw the new one that the colors had been corrected. I couldn't tell the new ending was a reshoot.

Not too bad on the sound mixing; that's something I want to really improve on for my own films. Let us know when that sound library is hosted. I use a sound library used for Crystal Focus lightsaber soundboards, which works for most things though unfortunately has little variety.

Great film, and informative making of.

  • this is just really amazing stuff! :D

  • Did you use Adobe After Effects to get the lightsaber light? If brandon did it ask him pease! Love your vids

  • RvDvB: Ryan Vs Dorkman Vs Brandon.

  • Ryan the sound effects are just spot on, gorgeous! Fantastic work, and Brandon the colours work really Really well! :)

  • Will there be a 3rd installment for RvD and RvB? Also will there be a "Multi-Fight" so to speak with the Ryan Clones against Dorkman and Brandon at the same time? Great video and keep up with the awesome work.

  • I'm just gonna say that 1st - the original Ryan vs. Dorkman video inspired me and some friends (ages 12 and 15) to make a short series of star wars fan films and we learned to do it from your tutorials THANKS!

Also - now as a filmmaker i find (specifically) the spin rig to be brilliant and I'd love to know more details on it if possible. This rig really gave me some really cool ideas for cinematography and I was wondering if you could share your amazing invention? thanks Ryan!

  • Can you tell me what is the program at 8:43? I know it's called silhouette, but why did you used it to make the saber core? Is it better that rotoscoping in after effects?

  • Holy smokes. Man you are truly a gifted short filmmaker and the effects were amazing. This production was incredible!

  • omg travis from six in the morning and three in the afternoon lol

  • And btw. If you are making a fight someday again. Plz win (only one time). Everytime you lose. Why?

  • Plz also upload the first Ryan vs Brandon Fight in HD. The old versions in 240p are crap.

  • @PS3zocker83 There is no RvB in HD. It was shot in standard definition. I don't know who has the fullest resolution, since I wasn't involved with the effects aside from the non-glow contest entry.

  • @RyanWieber

Yeah but at 2:50 you showed a short cut from this old battle in this clip here. And it looks much better than the old RvB flash clips uploaded on youtube 4 years ago. So I believe you must have an old better looking master on your PC.

    Greetings from Germany

  • That rotating camera is cool.

  • Is this available in HD (not youtube HD...) like Ryan vs Dorkman I and II are?

  • @tpiom Do you mean hosted as a QuickTime file? No, it is only available right here on YouTube, in 720p.

  • check out my ryan vs dorkman 1 re-edit. a bit off but it was just a saber effect test

  • ryan, very impressive and mind-boggling work as always and congrats to the volunteer for the rotoing. but as always, has to have the final touch of ryan weiber!

  • Hay Rayn could you do a tutorial on some of your saber spins? particularly when you dual wielded?

  • amazing:D

  • Thanks Ryan this is so cool to see your methods behind the scenes!

  • Insane. You should be making Hollywood movies. Period.

  • Hey Ryan, It's Davis again, don't know if you still remember me, but there is a little bit of a lightsaber fight in the short movie in my channel "Slayer". Can you check it out and tell me what you think?

  • Hi Ryan, here is what I think you should do for RVD3: take the action outdoors, make amazing interactions with the environment, and try do do something underwater; and blow everybody's mind in the process (well, like you always do anyway).

It would be like Metal Gear Solid 3, leave behind the industrial kind of setting for a complete outdoors one, I think a lot of cool stuff can be made there.

  • Hey ryan, I just wanted to know if you used carbon fyber blades during the shooting of RVB2.

  • @playermodsrule Yes, we used carbon fiber.

  • Hey, Ryan Wieber, Nice Work! I am curious as to when you were thinking about doing RvD3. Also, I was wondering if you were ever planning on actually winning a lightsaber fight (in the video, obviously)for a change. I was also thinking that it might be great to come up with endings that are a little more exciting and different compared to the other lightsaber videos that you did, asI noticed that some people were not all that excited about the deadly head slice due to it being like RvB's ending.

  • RvB2 was truely fantastic and thanks for this making of feature! The only thing missing is some gratieous out-takes! :D

  • So for the clone shot, you just meticulously masked each one of you when there was overlap?
