The Andretti Curse Lives. Michael was so close but couldn't get it done, Marco came closer but still couldn't get it done. John isn't very good, Mario should have won atleast three times. The Andretti Curse.
Not only did Rusty screw up and say "greatest Daytona 500 ever," Marty Reid screwed up in the unedited version...calling this the "closest finish....uhhh...err....second closest finish in Indy history."
It's little known, but Rusty's flub cost ABC the Sports Emmy for "Best Live Sports Event" for 2006.
this was the best season of IRL I ever saw, Hornish jr. & Castroneves(Penske) vs Dixon & Wheldon(Ganassi)... those were always the top 4 or 5(Tony Kanaan sometimes was in it too)
@cameron23231 It was an edit. He actually said "best Daytona 500 ever." IRL nation instantly wants to assassinate Rusty Wallace (then again, he was a terrible commentator to begin with).
@Franchitti0709 yea it is nascar has alot more views than indy on there worst track were there is the least views there is still more views than the indy 500 proven fact
@cameron23231 Yes, I will fully admit NASCAR has a much larger fan base, but 2 road courses per year? Otherwise its the same shit: Jimmie Johnson cheating his way to another win. Don't get me wrong, oval racing is great, but so is road course racing. Thats why F1 is boring as hell. Indianapolis 500 is on a whole different page of importance and history than a bunch of bootleggers driving on Daytona Beach to run from the PoPo.
@cameron23231 I can't really understand what your saying here, but Indycar racing takes talent beyond any NASCAR drivers, IMO. Indycar takes different circuits and throws EVERYTHING at the drivers. It isn't all left turns at tracks the NASCAR boys go to every other week. They have 2 races at almost every track, why? Thats pointless. The plate tracks aren't racing, either. Indycar is the future of auto racing in the US as NASCAR views have begun to plummit.
@91basket ok when dario Franchitti, patrick carpinder, and Juan Pablo Montoya went to nascar in 07 and 08 they even said it took way more talent to drive a nascar than indy and then patrick and dario left they all said its more fun to drive a nascar cause ur not driveing with a little square wheel turning it about a inch every corner you drive with a real wheel and have to wheel the car every corner
@91basket o and NASCAR got more views last year than any year EVER and its just the races that are plummiting and i think we can all say that every racing series ticket sales are plummiting
@cameron23231 That's because they're paid higher. NASCAR has a higher audience, that's where the sponsor dollars are, and national recognition is there. Too bad it's getting shittier every year, while the IRL--okay, IndyCar--is actually gaining steam because Randy Bernard actually knows how this IndyCar business works, unlike Tony George.
@cameron23231 Dario realizes that he sucked in NASCAR (the injury suffered at Talladega was the final straw) and Danica was only in NASCAR on a part-time basis.
(before anyone responds, yes, a win is a win, but it was on fuel mileage with half the field in Long Beach for a race of their own the same weekend...emphasis on the latter)
@cameron23231, I'll somewhat agree. Nascar as a whole may be better, but nothing beats the history, tradition, and pageantry of the Indy 500. More people still go to it and it would have higher TV ratings if it still wasn't blacked out in its own viewing area. Fact is: there isn't one Nascar even that has a higher attendance than the Indy 500 does. The Indy 500 is better than anything Nascar does, but Nascar may be better than IndyCar. Its just a matter of personal preference, but Indy is better
@cameron23231 The Daytona 500 is better? The Daytona 500 lost all of it's meaning when plates were put in the cars and it turned into pack racing. Winning the Daytona 500 has NO meaning at all, anymore. Its a lottery, not a skill, just sayin
@91basket and the daytona 500 is the most popular race in the world right now not the indy 500 not the 24 hours of lemans everybody loves the plate tracks cause theres huge wrecks and flips we nascar fans dont like to c a dominating car every week we like were thers 30 lead changes in 30 laps
Hornish's car just seem to take off with a huge burst at the end there, while the other car seemed to stahl. What happened there? Was it the car or the driver?
I've been watching the Indy 500 since about 2005. This FOR SURE in the 5 years that I've watched the Indy (I actually went to yesterday's) was the BEST ending ever. Although, I was very disappointed that Marco didn't win. But I can't wait until he does! :)
Not really. Unser is ten times more talented (tbh), and Mario Andretti was a F1 driver, and won the Daytona 500 as well as the Indy 500. Hornish is stuck in stock cars where he's mediocre at best. Shame, too, because I expect Hornish to perform well in the IRL had he stayed there.
I might still be watching IRL if Hornish was still around. Big loss. He was fricking perfect on ovals - utterly fearless and precise. At the speeds those cars ran (less than CART or USAC) he was the best. But IMS is a roval and Sam had only one brilliant day there. On road courses, well, the less said the better.
Why do they dive away from the wall off turns 2 and 4?. Diving to the inside then back to the outside I think would scrub off speed. Would it not be faster to come off the turn and hold if a couple feet off the wall?
if you looked from a satelite you would see that it is actually the smoothest arc through the turn and distributes the rotational traction requirement evenly over the turn, which maintains momentum and energy in the vehicle.. its also a tigher radius than going 2 ft off the wall.. if you recall high school math.. the circumference is 3.14 x pi x 2.. that means for every foot you tighten the radius on a track you shorten it by 6.28 feet - and that could be a car length per turn.

have to agree lol, indy did make cart cart. so glad the two series merged though, just made sense. its nice to have a good mix of ovals and road courses though, makes the champion more deserving, bring on 2009!
Marco in his interview said that i could have been real bad at blocking but that probably would have crashed us both so i thing that he should have blocked him even if both of them did crash Michael Andretti still would have won that race.
Hornish needs to come back from NASCAR cause NASCAR sucks. I was so happy that day. I was there and I was in the garage area after the race when Marco and Michael came in on a cart, drove into the garage, and the door shut. They were both crying and a lady asked my Uncle what happened to them, to which my uncle replied "They just finished 2nd and 3rd".
equipment. Penske doesn't have as high tech of equipment in NASCAR that the other teams have. Plus NASCAR is just a soap oprah drama for guys...not real racing. I mean come on, they race RWD V8 toyota camrys...how is that stock? Hornish, Jeff Gordon, Tony Steward, Ryan Newman, Kacey Kahne, and all the other former open wheel drivers need to come back to open wheel and drive sucky NASCAR into bankruptcy.
Wow...you spell drivers names wrong. First of all, Gordon, Stewart, Hornish, Newman, and Kahne are in NASCAR for exposure reasons, and of the mentioned, only one of them sucks, and mind you, Penske has decent equipment, just drivers that doesn't show Penske's potential. Second, it's been stock before the 70s, for safety reasons and the sense of speed. Third of all, the Camry is just there for namebranding purposes. I do agree that NASCAR is more of a soap opera because even I can't stand it.
Ya I am not against racing with fenders, but I can't stand the NASCAR taxi cabs. I watch DTM when I can get it, and I really enjoy that because they don't pretend to be "stock" and they also have world class drivers on road courses without "debris cautions" and varying fines and all the other crap NASCAR pulls. (of course most NASCAR drivers are 'world class' as well)
damn straight! Oval racing is a joke. Open-wheel cars should be mandatory that they only run on road courses. On ovals, its the best car that wins, not driver. Plus, IRL is just plain gay.
I like the new schedule with half ovals and half road courses (although I think street courses are a joke and need to be replaced with real road courses). We need to stick together as open wheel enthusiasts or else all those rednecks down at NASCAR will drive us out along with sprints and midgets too. I am just happy that the USAC "snowplow" silver crown car (thought up by NASCAR) got canned.
Racing is not what it seems on TV buddy. And while they may look like they're in control 99.9% of the time, they are really running on the edge on the ovals as much if not more so than on a road course.
amen brotha bring back the REAL Indy Car World Series and trash this rip off of a so called "racing" series. the formation of the fIRL is # 10 on the ten most dumbest moments in sports.
I am 19 years old and am very blessed to live in indianapolis....i have been to this race 9 out of the past 10 years and this race was by far the best...even though the 07 race had more lead changes due to the crazy wheather...i sit in turn four and when the cars were passing the last time the crowd was louder than the cars....and if you really wanna c a good video of the finish of this race...listen to the radio....by far the best in the business
ajajajja hornish is a total sell out... tradin runin 3rd place or beter in all irl for runin 30th in nascrap!!ajajja same goes 4 franchitti!!!!!!!!!! ajajjajajja
Understand that those are two different formulas of racing. Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Robby Gordon (LOL) handled that transition with no problem, however. Same goes to Juan Pablo Montoya, and he came from IndyCar to F1 racing to stock cars.
the track record for qualifications is 336.7 in the late 90's. The pole speed recently has been below 230 because honda provides all the engines and they limit the speed to keep the wrecks from getting too bad
I was at that race and was thrilled when Marco was denied. He's the same sort of racer as his dad and grandfather - too aggressive and not smart enough (and always quick to blame their cars or other drivers for their own failures).
Beating the shit out of their cars and getting surprised when they break. How many half shafts did Marco break that year - and another today in St. Pete. Why doesn't that happen to guys like Dixon or Helio?
That's why none of them have,or will ever, win an Indy 500.
he sure did, he got kissed by andy granatelli in victory lane. Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, and recently Juan Pablo Montoya are the only men to win in NASCAR, USAC/CART, and Formula 1
theres less overtaking because its harder to pass on a road course. get it? theres less room and hardly any drafting effect and usually only 1 line around the entire course. on the other hand ovals have lots of lines(most)...lots of drafting ability..hence the overtaking and exiting racing.
I love Indy racing and I love Sammy. I'm won't watch him on Nascar. Don't like. Too much cheating and crying from the drivers. Please come back Sammy!!!!
I'm a Marco fan but I'm glad hew lost becuase when he wins it he'll go to F1. so I hope he doesn't win it for a while becuase I don't want him to go to F1. I have nuthin' against F1 though
don't you worry orioles001, if marco goes to F1 he'll suffer the same fate as his daddy and he'll get chewed up and spit out because his F1 ride will be with Team Volkswagen LOL
i'm sorry if confused you but i was joking around with the volkswagen comment. that was to mean that he'd drive for a lower tier team in F1, Honda would possibly be a spot for Marco if he were to go there. If Sebastian is driving for Torro Rosso then I'd say it'd be impossible for Marco to get a very good ride but you never know I guess.
Mario win it once, and had many other chances to win, but either got screwed or luck bit him the ass. But i can say that Marco will win more than one.
if marco won there would be a riot i wish he won on the last corner it was his to lose but hornish realed him in in the last quarter mile next year marco my words lol
I was there. Amazing finish. I really wanted Marco to win though (same age as me). My Dad was cheering for Michael though. Must be a generational thing. What a hot day though. Most of the race was boring because Wheldon had the lead forever it seemed. But the ending was super exciting!
I think it was the best Indy 500 finish ever. Unlike the previous close finishes in '82 and '92 the 2nd place driver was able to make a last gasp effort at passing the leader succeed.
YouTube is always going to be a place where everybody disagrees w/everybody -- which is fine, I just wish both sides didn't act like prissy pinheads (but of course they will most of the time). I'm a longtime open-wheel fan, but I liked Rusty Wallace's enthusiasm. My favorite, though, was Bobby Unser, who they cut from the lineup years ago. He was passionate, opinionated, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun!
@coltcub I totally agree with you but the Daytona 500 is better than the Indy 500

I do agree that NASCAR is more of a soap opera because even I can't stand it.
dalejrgamer 3 years ago
Ya I am not against racing with fenders, but I can't stand the NASCAR taxi cabs. I watch DTM when I can get it, and I really enjoy that because they don't pretend to be "stock" and they also have world class drivers on road courses without "debris cautions" and varying fines and all the other crap NASCAR pulls. (of course most NASCAR drivers are 'world class' as well)

BRING BACK CART!!!!
crazyful123 3 years ago
damn straight! Oval racing is a joke. Open-wheel cars should be mandatory that they only run on road courses. On ovals, its the best car that wins, not driver. Plus, IRL is just plain gay.
DLFerrariFan 3 years ago
And how many times did CART/Champ Car go toes up?
I like the new schedule with half ovals and half road courses (although I think street courses are a joke and need to be replaced with real road courses). We need to stick together as open wheel enthusiasts or else all those rednecks down at NASCAR will drive us out along with sprints and midgets too. I am just happy that the USAC "snowplow" silver crown car (thought up by NASCAR) got canned.
bonwittspoo2002 3 years ago
You say that as if you've done it before.
Racing is not what it seems on TV buddy. And while they may look like they're in control 99.9% of the time, they are really running on the edge on the ovals as much if not more so than on a road course.
Tactical300 3 years ago
amen brotha bring back the REAL Indy Car World Series and trash this rip off of a so called "racing" series. the formation of the fIRL is # 10 on the ten most dumbest moments in sports.
bring back the CART PPG Indy Car World Series.

Understand that those are two different formulas of racing. Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Robby Gordon (LOL) handled that transition with no problem, however. Same goes to Juan Pablo Montoya, and he came from IndyCar to F1 racing to stock cars.

how fast do indy cars typically run around the oval?
tkktkt 3 years ago
225-240 MPH nowadays.
dalejrgamer 3 years ago
wow man
tkktkt 3 years ago
Well, more like topping out at 230 these days with the Dallara. seems like everyone gets scared after 235-240 mph.
Tactical300 3 years ago
the track record for qualifications is 336.7 in the late 90's. The pole speed recently has been below 230 because honda provides all the engines and they limit the speed to keep the wrecks from getting too bad
peavyt15 3 years ago
Exactly, it's unfortunate that everyone is under this impression that we're "going too fast."
Gil de Ferran's CART Qualifying run at Fontana in 2000, the 241 mph lap, may be the fastest official timed lap we ever see for a long time.

Grandpa (Mario) did win The Indy 500 in 1969.
So get it straight. Dumb ass.....
Tamaraj01 3 years ago 5
he sure did, he got kissed by andy granatelli in victory lane. Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, and recently Juan Pablo Montoya are the only men to win in NASCAR, USAC/CART, and Formula 1

It's called tradition. I think they do that since the 1920s when one of the winners wanted a glass of milk after winning the 500.

nascarfan1444 4 years ago 5
theres less overtaking because its harder to pass on a road course. get it? theres less room and hardly any drafting effect and usually only 1 line around the entire course. on the other hand ovals have lots of lines(most)...lots of drafting ability..hence the overtaking and exiting racing.

I'm a Marco fan but I'm glad hew lost becuase when he wins it he'll go to F1. so I hope he doesn't win it for a while becuase I don't want him to go to F1. I have nuthin' against F1 though
orioles001 4 years ago
don't you worry orioles001, if marco goes to F1 he'll suffer the same fate as his daddy and he'll get chewed up and spit out because his F1 ride will be with Team Volkswagen LOL

lol team volkswagen 'DAS AUTO!' and jenson button can be his teammate.
yomi1896 3 years ago
Volkswagon is coming to f1? when? I thought if he went to f1 he would drive honda
racefreak26 3 years ago
i'm sorry if confused you but i was joking around with the volkswagen comment. that was to mean that he'd drive for a lower tier team in F1, Honda would possibly be a spot for Marco if he were to go there. If Sebastian is driving for Torro Rosso then I'd say it'd be impossible for Marco to get a very good ride but you never know I guess.
wags2010 3 years ago
The andretti curse bits Marco. He'll win it. He has plenty of years left racing.
combatking08 4 years ago
look what happened after marino lost super bowl 19, a lot of people said he'd be back but he never came back.
Sure its easy to say that because hes what 20 now? but i dont know. He has said oval racing scares him and that hes getting used to it.
hiroshi021 3 years ago
Mario win it once, and had many other chances to win, but either got screwed or luck bit him the ass. But i can say that Marco will win more than one.

I was there. Amazing finish. I really wanted Marco to win though (same age as me). My Dad was cheering for Michael though. Must be a generational thing. What a hot day though. Most of the race was boring because Wheldon had the lead forever it seemed. But the ending was super exciting!
NTNchamp2 4 years ago
