  • Why are there less stars in the updated version?

  • Now I know that my original DVD collection without all the new stuff is going to be worth money one day. The old series is a piece of history and like everything else, they seem to tamper with history. I was relieved that most people in the comments still prefer the old version.

  • @MrSilvestris Why would it be worth money? There are a million of them out there... it's not like they manufactured only 100 DVD sets.

  • @lonstar70 First of all, I hardly think there are 100 million DVD's of Star trek As there are not 100 million fans. I am also referring to how many copies of the untampered version there will be left in 50 to 70 years from now with the boxes they came from. A lot happens in that amount of time and you seem to be disregarding history but you use arbitrary numbers nevertheless.

  • @MrSilvestris I said one million, not a hundred million. And yes, it's an exaggeration, but they made plenty of them at the time and there is no reason it would be worth money. Something has to be extremely rare and have a high demand for it to be worth jack. How am I disregarding history? Anyway, if you want to believe that you will be rich in 70 years, then I won't interfere in your pipe dream.

  • @lonstar70 You use arbitrary numbers, so why shouldn't I?

  • @MrSilvestris That doesn't make any sense. But I really don't care. I hope you have that gold mine of rare Star Trek DVD's in a safe so you can be rich in 50 years. Good luck with that.

  • i like a lot of the new angles - especially the view of the defiant underneath the opening credits, but WTF is up with the darkness of the print in the remastered episode? way, way too dark.

  • I dont like how some of the angels are changed, but I do understand WHY they might have done so. To show that, yes, in space you can go in to any direction, not just the direction the enterprise is going... More realistic, yes, less dynamic, most definateley. By the way, is the other one widescrean? I notised in peoples faces, like spocks seems longer int he original version, and Uhura looks a little bit more slumped on her seat in the re-msatered.

  • I never much liked the music for the third season. This is a case with this episode where the enhanced images of the Defiant were no where near as good as the original shots. I like the better effects, of course, but the angles of the Defiant in the enhanced version were inferior to the angles and juxtaposition of the Enterprise to the Defiant of the original episode.

  • @samsmutt Me neither, but most of the music in this episode is from the first season. Specifically in Tomorrow is Yesterday when Kirk and Sulu are sneaking around. ;)

  • what a shame :(

  • The Original looks better than the remastered. The original is a little brighter than Remastered one.

  • Would be interesting to see the Blu-Ray version cause something really seems off with the CGI. For now I'll give them an 'E' for effort, but I'm still a bit mystified as to why they did this to begin with. I mean you either want to remaster to preserve what was already there, or alter to present an alternate take on what it would look like with new visuals. This is like "preserve, but alter, but try to preserve, but kinda sorta alter". I'm confused.

  • Why does the remastered one (created about 40 years later) look worse? It looks cartoonish really!

  • This makes it look like crap. You need to compare the actual blu-ray original vs remastered. There is a HUGE difference. The original effects on blu-ray look terrible. The footage itself has just not aged well. Maybe back in the 60's it would have looked ok.

  • I've seen a lot of the remasters and while I like most of them, this one I think fell short. Other than the energy web, none of the other new effects impressed me.

  • When has Shatner NOT thought that he had the whole universe to himself?

  • Its so fake!! They used a minature and it was greatly detailed, by having the CGI starship it completely erases the fact that someone spent a great deal of time to create the Enterprise. Its a slap in the face. It is also very dark and there arent any stars, has anyone else notice that?! The remastered doesnt even show the stars in the background! ST:TOS got butchered in my opinion, its no longer believeable and future generations wont be able to apperciate the quality of original designs.

  • everything was better in the sixties............new beatles song every two months

  • The remastered version seems darker, or is it just me?

  • Thank you, SpockBoy!

  • @fang207984

Um, they cant? Everything is from the 1960s, its not like they can just go to the past and change what they do. They just edit the footage.

  • I liked the original Defiant better... but if you are going to tamper with anything, it may as well be everything.

  • i prefer the remastered. it sux for the ppl who originally did the SFX..but the new CGI looks a lot more realistic, especially with the fixed lighting. STOP HOLDING ONTO THE PAST!!

  • Wow... Quality of western entertainment - a remaster that is WORSE than original.

  • @UnnamedSeeker If you say so -- personally, it looks pretty improved to me. Mind you, they clearly retained the same general "look" so that restricted just how realistic the new effects could be. If they had gone for true realism it would have been even better, but at the cost of clashing with the overall look of the show. I think this compromise is a good one. And, they needed remastering -- even effects from five or six years later were much better, let alone modern effects.

  • @Ranillon

Well, let me put it like that.

New CGI effects still visually clash with old footage and trying to have them blend together by making everything dark just adds couple degrees of failure.

So yeah, while CGI by itself is not bad overall visual quality of remaster is shit.

  • The Defiant, wasn't it later discovered by the mirror universe NX-01 Enterprise crew?

  • I dont see the purpose of making everything darker in the remaster. Even the credits. The viewscreen is so dark you cant even see stars anymore.

  • I can't say that I like what they did with the Tholian ship. In fact I like the crytaline craft from before.

  • kirk: yeah I was in space for a few hours. pfft wasn't no thang.

  • Great new book (Did these stories really happen?) has Shatner dedication! Book at amazon!

  • The original compositions were better and more colorful. The CGI looks dull, is too dark for its own good, ad uses weird new angles when showing the ships. That's my opinion.

  • The original has substance, the remastered effects look dimensionless and fake. With redesigning the Tholian ships they tried to legitimize the awful crap Enterprise series as canon? How lame.

  • @neonknights Why would they have to legitimize Enterprise as canon, it was already onscreen and thus canon.

  • @Hartzilla2007 Not canon for me.

  • @neonknights Well to be fair the enterprise series IS canon regardless of whether or not you like it.

  • hmmm...I think I like the original version better!

I think the original enterprise footage was better because, although it may look like a toy in some parts, it was FAR more detailed. The interior shots were dull...why get rid of the stars on the screen? who cares if its not really what it would look like, you need stars! lol The lighting on the actors in the remastered does look better though.

  • Not a great improvement for all of the effort.

  • The side by sides just go to show even more so that the original is far superior. While a few of the new space shots are rather nice, overall they look like a cheap video game for the most part and take away from the episode, I feel.

TOS's SFX may look cheesy now, but overall they were pretty good for the time, especially seeing that they were working on a shoestring budget, not with the kind cash used for 2001: ASO. Another key was they used high quality color film to shoot the episodes.

  • @NosferatusCoffin thank you for these comments. Especially considering TOS's original optical budget. Yes, and film picks up the detail from actual models.

  • Have anyone notice the Sulu part(the viewscreen part, well some) are stock footage? The navigator where some of the Sulu parts are crewman not Checkov.

  • @DazhFX That was filmed for The Corbomite Maneuver, more than two years before The Tholian Web, and reused countless times as stock footage. Whenever they look at the viewscreen, they used the same shot. The other man is either an unknown extra or Anthony Call (Dave Bailey).

  • The special effects of the original series look better at a tiny resolution. As you're looking at them here. On a TV screen though. You can see the flaws.

  • Analog is always better. Eyes responding directly to optical vibrations. A mirror. Digital is like to see through a glass, an excellent glass, but isn't neutral.

  • I have no problem with digitization as long as it is used for enhancing colors etc. But I heard that when they remasterd star trek the Arena episode for example, they added more buildings, and a few more actors. I think that is wrong. Yes the props or special effects are corny, but remember this was 1967-69. Those corny special effects is what makes star trek unique.

  • the original looks so much better the colors are more vibrant.

Some old shows don't look good remastered or in bluray, that is why i wont buy this on blueray and have to give star wars serious thought before i buy it on blueray.

  • some instances are better, some should have been left alone. but overall no major complaints.

  • it depends on the scene. if its a conversation - see the characters - then i prefer the original. But if its effects, I usually prefer the remastered version - like when we see the ship, a ship being destroyed, etc.

  • I like the old effects better but I can watch ether one

  • Yes. This episode won an Emmy for FX and should have probably been left alone. However, the battle scenes seem improved.

  • The effects are sooo cheesy why??

  • because the show is old, but i loove old stuff

  • I think the CGI on this episode is one the better efforts..Damn, why was it so uneven???

  • They didn't do this just for the hell of it - it's like the new movie. Star Trek has lost it's appeal! Younger generations won't go near something like the original! By revving it up, not only are they paying respect to TOS by showing it how it could have been, but they're ensuring the future of the franchise! I think that's worth a few pissed off trekkies

  • that is true, but i'm part of the younger generation and i don't care about the effects

  • Yes, but I'm guessing you're a fan anyway?

  • With respect to the efforts of those involved, and with reference to the new VFX, I quote the Federation President from Trek VI: "ust because we can do a thing, it does not necessarily follow that we MUST do that thing."

  • The only thing that really needed fixing in this episode were those lame spacesuits.

  • Personally all i really care about in Star Trek is the video quality and special FX detail.

  • On the remastered side, there's more realism, clarity and detail with regards to the Enterprise's appearance. Also at 0:35, the cgi version of the U.S.S. Defiant really looks impressive!

  • The point of this video was to show how the special effects have been upgraded. The actual remastered episodes are not darker like they appear here. They are actually far more clear and look great in HD.

  • Things I learned from this remastered episode.

    1. Never do "ENTERPRISE" tie-ins.

    2. Darker ≠ Better

  • The special effects are cool. Why everthing else looks so dark and blurry is beyond me.

  • I'm not a trekkie, so I have no loyalty to the cheesy original effects. I'm not big on restoring old movies--it takes away their authenticity--but when you have effects that are so bad that it shakes you out of your fantasy world, I really appreciate new ones. The phasers are one thing that I'm really grateful were altered. In the originals, it's so painfully obvious that they're drawn on that it made me cringe. Enough to ruin an otherwise awesome battle scene.

  • I've just viewed a few of these side by side comparisons. In the others I like the remastered version of the planets but the older versions are fine and still work. That plus for the remastered version aside - and maybe a few others - I much prefer the original rendition which is brighter and clearer. More vibrant is the best word for it. The original is a style of its own and maybe that is part of its unique appeal.

  • With only a few exceptions, the Original version as presented here looks far superior to te "Remastered" version. The original picture is brighter, clearer, and the colors are more vibrant and saturated. The Remastered version looks a bit "dulled down" or flat or something. There are only a couple shots that I preferred the new over the original, but in the vast majority the Original hands down looks far better. And some changes are just sort of bizarre (i.e. the lack of stars in the new vers)

  • I concur. Some of the space shots are gorgeous but I don't like the interior touch ups, they look like you said, dull or something.

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

  • I like a lot of the new effects on the show, but this episode looks better in it's original version IMO. The colors and contrast are better in the old version, and the original shots/ viewing angles were better.

  • stop ur fuckin moanin on will ya, ok, it makes it a bit diff thats all..an i bet u all over 40.

  • Nope, 35 here. I wasn't born when this series came out on TV and it doesn't make a damned difference.

  • If people want to get all high on computer graphics, that's fine for them. But changing the camera angles entirely? That is just f**ed up. Absolute sabotage.

  • The only reason they originally had those camera angles was to hide the fact that the other side of the ship was not painted.

  • I agree. Why on earth did they totally monkey with the angles? Fucking weird.

  • I like the remastered, the tholian ship in the original just looked like it was a piece of paper

  • The original is better. This reminds me of how many times a Hollywood remake of an old film will turn out like this.

  • Rediculous.

  • 1:29 OMG CHEEZY!! Who the hell approved that crappy "hit"?

(oh btw, I just came across one of these vids that was yanked!)

  • The new stuff sucks. Its a fucking cartoon.Magilla Gorilla anyone?

  • This episode scared me as a child :D

  • why do they have to do this,

I dont think they needed to.

  • They do it to bring attract new fans from today's generation. Somebody from today's generation would not like looking at old model footage.

  • I like the random, "I had a whole universe to myself" thrown in there.

  • i like how the remastered tholian ships look. the original ones look like colorful coffins =P

  • Wow, I'm just amazed at how little improvement the remastered version appears compared to the original. In my opinion the original is so much more superior.

  • The ORIGINAL is almost ALWAYS superior!

    One cannot remake history.

  • One thing you can appreciate about the remastered are the many ship angles they created for the Enterprise. More variety.

  • It's amazing how they did the original so well back then

  • Really Well done the Remastered is great but where the Hell are the Stars on the Screen of the Enterprise and in Space they do not show up I do not know if thats because of the Filming or upload of the Video or something or they did it on purpose but there are like no stars in Space in the remastered version.

  • They were there, you just couldn't see them on such a small screen. If you watch it on a TV, you'll see them.

  • could someone upload this episode? Original or remastered, don't mind as long as it's watchable.

  • This is really neat and thank you. But I do think it's kind of hard to say "The remaster is.." or "The original is.." when looking at it on youtube. Remember, the remastered is designed for HDtv around 1920x1080 resolution. I've heard people say that the original looks more detailed, but from what I can see, it looks like stars disappear when that high resolution picture is squashed down to youtube size.

Also consider that it is compressed further to fit them in a double window.

  • The older version wins the phaser strike hands down.

  • Some of the shots ARENT made to drastically change or improve the old effects, but the old effects ARE bad when shown in HD, and they had to improve them visually, so as to not have the drastic quality change that the old series had when going between VISUAL shots and the normal interior ship shots.

  • The new Tholian ships are yellower.

  • Fascinating

  • I'm failing to see the added value with the new special effects in this episode.

  • Why does the remastered version look darker?

  • I can't say why, but changing my monitor settings enabled me to at least see it on this one.

  • In Star TRek: the never seen or talked about episode, where each crew member changes sex, miss chekov looks in her pants and says....

    "Its wanished."

on a more serious, note the trouble with the remasterd is that while it looks much better TECHNACLLY, our expectations were much higher, the old one is closer to the state of the art FOR THAT TIME. I agree with both sides in this debate.

  • Expectations notwithstanding, if you have read the background, the remastering team admits that it had a difficult job: to update the effects and exterior process shots so that the still-very workable interiors and excellent stories could retain viability for a few more decades, while not drifting to much from what Gene would have done with those same shots. The goal was NOT to use the absolute state-of-the-art, but to make it all fit.

  • oh I am not denying they did a great job,and had a had task. One thing I really like about the new ones is they restored the shots, so that the colours have less of that early colour tv look.

  • Remastered owns all of you oldies.

  • Oldies survived this long without being remastered.

  • to me, the original looks realistic compared to the remastered.

the remastered is like a computer game, lol

  • In quite a few scenes, the original model shots look much sharper and clearer than the digitally remastered version.

It proves that sometimes newer is not always better.

  • Most of the remastered episodes look better, particularly where they replace planets, backgrounds, and guest ships that didn't get much love the first time around.

They didn't improve anything in this episode though. Some of their angle choices are pretty bad.

  • I didn't actually realise the original is so good. Having in mind that it's over 40 years old... Wow - in some cases it IS better than the remastered version.

  • wow the original is better

  • The old version was much better. It captured the pan-dimensional nature of the Tholian ships, which was totally overlooked in the remaster.

  • Are you sure you don't have the original and the remastered mixed up? Because the original looks better in every way.

  • the tholian web effect that won the 1970 emmy awards look a hell of a lot better than the horrible botched cbs/cgi abortion attempt!

yuck to the crappy effects of 2007 and cheers to 1969's!

  • Hehe... Chekov says "wanished"... gets me every time!

  • they did such a good job on this episode originally that the remastered makes no difference, unlike other episodes

  • Original is a lot better.

Hi to those on the TrekBBS by the way.

  • What!? The new camera angles are better in every case. All the original shots are from the same basic angle. The new ones are a lot more adventurous and interesting and carry the story better. This is being done by fans of the show remember, they're not going to change something unless they think it's an improvement.

  • ...I prefer the original indeed! Thank you for the comparison!

  • Why are the interiors so sooty looking?

  • the oringinal camera angles were more interesting

  • original was better
