  • Technically, this is in A minor (aeolian). The progression is a ii-v-i, resolving to an A minor chord.

  • @dann3th3manni3 You can argue that with Dave Weiner.

  • @satchwayne When improvising over this track, yes, you use the B Locrian scale over the Bmin7b5 chord (the first chord in the progression). But the chord progression is a ii-v-i in A minor. B locrian has the same notes as the A minor scale; they are both diatonic to each other. Think of B locrian as the 2nd mode of the minor scale (the seventh mode of the major scale). Anyways, the jam track is in the key of A minor, not B locrian. The note "A" is the tonal center, not "B."

  • @satchwayne

The progression may be in a minor key, but if you use the Locrian scale to improvise on, then that is more than enough for some people. The problem with using Locrian harmonies is that the tonic is a minor7flat5 chord, which is really hard to resolve to. I just solve this by not expecting my Locrian stuff to resolve, and then it can do whatever. Haha

Good job on the solo, man. Both this and the second part, I loved them both!

  • Finally, someone using locrian that isn't playing metal crap

  • You're an excellent guitarist, man!

Keep it up. I wish you the best.

  • Not very lochrian to my mind ... 1.06 nicely resolved into something else.

  • Not very lochrian to my mind

  • Sounds really jazzy

  • Fantastic my friend!!!!

  • @LorettaV Thank you so much bro!

  • @TheRockerInside Modes are really no mystery. All they are is a tone within the major scale. Locrian happens to be the seventh mode in the major scale so if you play from B to B in the C major scale, you have B locrian. The catch is knowing when to use which mode because each mode has a flavor to it. To find that out you have to be able to harmonize a scale. Check out Dave Weiner's lesson on that. Just search it here on youtube. Hope this helps!!

  • So nice... the intent, the tone, the textures... well done.

  • @RaddNiner Thank you for the nice comment!!

  • nice

  • @scimpi Thanks!

  • Locrian is majestic, I use it all the time along with double harmonic minor, phygian dominant, minor and lydian flat 5

  • @guitarshredking I like it as well but don't use it much

  • I can hear a bit of a Shawn Lane influence here ;) Fuckin love it man

  • @metalmasta Thanks so much! I get that a lot and didn't know who that guy was until i looked him up and was blown away!

  • Are you sure that was actually Locrian? Maybe I'm hearing it wrong but it sounded more like it was in A minor or something close to that. It was certainly a nice jam!

But there are more to modes than just scales. For it to actually be in Locrian it has to resolve to the 7th scale degree, otherwise it's just using a major/minor scale.

  • @abdnumber4 I got the track from dave weiner and I am using the A minor scale but with the seventh degree which is locrian like you said

  • @satchwayne Yep, The B locrian mode is the same pattern (not scale) as C ionian and A aeolian. But starting from B, which let's the intervals do the work at their structure.

  • @abdnumber4 According to Dave Weiner it is...I got this track from him.

  • Your insane man! Thats some damn good melodic playing and lightning licks =]

  • @metalmasta

    Thanks so much man!!

  • your really good

  • @HeyLoliGirl Thank you and I am not really that good. There are so many great players out there.

  • Whoa!!! Brilliant! I usually can't stand to hear Locrian but you added beauty to it. I applaude you Dude.

  • @jimdog1964 Thank you!

  • nice work as always. what chords did you use for the backing track?

  • @fupasack2 Not sure what the chords are actually!!

  • @satchwayne do you think you could tell me the notes in the chords so i can figure them out for myself?

  • whats the chord proggression for that

  • @pmasta333 Not sure but i got it at Dave Weiner's site

  • very nice execution. not a common scale. you tore it up man. good on ya

  • Thanks!

  • Where is your halo...

    Heavenly.

    5 fucking /5.

  • I think it is in my case!! Thanks!!! lol

  • thanks so much man. people who usually play this shred without any emotion at all and its starting to piss me off

  • I feel the same way with phrygian. I'd like to see people start putting more emotion into that mode.

  • its not just the locrian or the phrygian its all modes in general. it seems like the only emotion is used on major minor pentatonic and blues scales. probably cus their the easiest lol

  • Right on bro!!

  • I agree it is such a nice sounding scale if it is played with passion! I am still working on that!

  • Thank you so very much!

  • Sick dude.

  • Thanks man!!!

  • Really cool jam

  • Thanks so much!!

  • nice man

  • Thanks a lot!!

  • hey bro i got 2 questions, first, where do you get your backing tracks (such as this one) and second, how long have you been playing the locrian, your fucking sick!

  • Thanks so much! I actually don't use Locrian that much since it works over diminshed chords. I do like the scale a lot though. Usually people use it as a dark scale in metal but I find much better uses for it then just metal.

  • sweet, and the backing track?

  • im noticing almost all the scales used in metal you can put over 7th chords and diminished chords and turn them into jazz and its awesome!

  • Amazing... Never listened a locrian mode as well as this... it's just... amazing...

Could you tell which chords did you use?

  • I am actually not sure on the chords because I got the backing track from online. I could figure them out for you and get back to you on that.

  • I can't believe it. Someone made the locrian mode sound good. I'd like to see you improvise with the octatonic scale too.

  • Cool!!!

  • this tune is in locrian mode?????

lol ! it sounds awesome man! this is So cool!

locrian always sounded weird to me! i never thought that this scale CAN sound so awesome? can you tell me the chord progreesion? it is a minor b5 with what?

  • Thanks so much!! I think you are right about the minor flat five thing....It is either that or a diminished chord. Yes, locrian is one of those odd ball scales but sounds great when you use it.

  • Why not many people use this mode? It has an exotic, mellow and beautiful sound.

  • Probably the reason that people don't use this mode is because it is one of those modes that has to have a diminished chord as its root. It works over a B diminished chord because Locrian is the seventh tone of the major scale. I love the sound as well. Kirk Hammet has used this mode a lot in Metallica.

  • very nice stuff man

  • Thanks so much bro!!

  • is that the satriani signature guitar?

  • Yes it is a JS1200CA

  • cheers to a true satch fan

  • Nice playing and great guitar...

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Wow, I really love this--it's so smooth, jazzy and relaxing... nice work!

  • Thanks a lot man! I am exploring jazz more and more! I need a lot of help though!

  • OMG SOOO GOOD

  • Thanks so much!!

  • Hi, can you share that backing track ?

    Thanks

  • Well executed. Beautiful tone!

  • Thanks so much for the nice comment! I am only using a Roland cube practice amp on this vid.

  • locrian is my fav mode

  • Not many people use it. It is a very interesting sounding mode.

  • nice man i like

  • Thanks a lot bro and sorry I didn't respond for such a long time.

  • Very smooth.

  • SWEET wayne. I like this one! even if it was for a minute.
