  • One of the best renditions I've ever heard, saddened to hear the Orator has passed.

    Scot's Wha Hae.

  • Very well done.

  • excellent

  • if you ever come across a well done haggis, enjoy it ! (porridge as well.) gx.from germany

  • Wow , such a talented man indeed sos srry to hear of your loss, I am an Honorary member of The Burn's club In Kilwinning and a member of Irvine Burn's club oldest in the world. just like to say would have loved to have seen this man as an invited guest the passion he had for Burn's indeed shines through will always be one of my favourites, so glad I stumbled upon this on you-tube and have posted on facebook for all to see , my thoughts are with his family for this truly remarkable man xxxxxx

  • Can you post the recipe it really really looked good?

I like it thick and pasty. I got some once from a Scottish specialty shop that were loose and crumbly.

"Making Oatmeal Cranberry Turnovers Part 1 " (this u tube video is about technique) check it out it's actually Scottish Oatmeal Turnovers that I use. The original filling was a date paste.

  • @Inteligento sorry i dont have the recipe. that was something lionel made when we shot it and he is no longer with us to ask.

  • rip bigman,,i know we almost never saw eye to eye, but u give em dixie up there man1

  • Very sadly - lionel died of a heart attack - at home on monday 6th september 2010.

Please pass this video on to as many people as possible - that would be the most fitting memorial...

  • R.I.P. Lionel 6th September 2010

“His uncomb'd hoary locks, wild-staring, thatched

    A head for thought profound and clear unmatch'd;

Yet tho' his caustic wit was biting rude,

His heart was warm, benevolent and good.”

    Robert Burns

    From: ‘The Poet’s Progress’ 1788

  • Great job...... loved it

  • @taragolden

LOL Now you know how Scorcese feels about "Raging Bull": no-one ever mentions him, just De Niro.

It is a really nice little film: "Mmm. Very good!" really makes it special.

  • This is possibly one of the best things I've ever seen on YouTube.

  • I could swear after he cut into it he was salivating a bit....not that I blame him though! excelent work

  • haggis for dinner then.

  • Food of fertility that Haggis.

  • nicely done.

  • mmmm...very good.

  • fantastic thanks for this really enjoyed it

  • Hi Lionel,

Thanks for posting this video its great to see that someone can still recite this fantastic poem the way its ment to be done. It has taken me about three days to trail through the other cringing, bad translation and other foreign crap listed on this medium.

The subtitles & your presentation helped our kids understand the poem so you have made new fans here. I bet even Rabbie himself would be pleased.

All the very best and well done.

Wha's like us - obviously no many !!

  • hey atholldein,

im glad you liked the video, but felt compelled to note that i am the director and editor.. lionel did give an awesome performance, but there WAS another team member here.

  • Hi

Sorry if it sounded as if I missed you out - of course the star needed someone to hold the camera !

  • yeah, its a little more complicated that being a warm body to hold the camera. why dont you shoot a video this good and let me know how it goes?

  • @Atholldein I am so sorry to hear of Lionel's passing, very sad news. I remember putting the band up when they played at Dartford, many years ago, He will live on in his music as his songs are sung all over. My son and I sing them at whatever folk club we go to, and will continue to do so, my wee girl (12yrs) sing them also, take care, my thoughts are with you, xxxx

  • One of the very best "address to the Haggis" I have seen.. thanks for putting it out there and making our Burns night fantastic and helping us show reverence to Robbie!

  • I attended a burns night last night,

No one knows how to enjoy themselves like the Scotts.

  • Another good'un Lionel! There's been a few comments on yir skullery there, I agree it's nice... not so sure about that curtain tho... ;)

  • Brilliant!!

    5 stars and favourited :)

  • happy burns day everyone. I have actually never had the pleasure of attending a burns night, so id be happy to see your response videos of the events you went to.

  • Lionel, as we would say here in Maine, "Finest Kind!"

We hope to come across this year, "Sang" or no.

    Fred & Julia

  • This is the best version I have found on You Tube! A good performance with correct pronunciation, and useful subtitles giving an English translation.

  • i am addressing the haggis this year so thanks for the pointers

  • you are welcome.. i am sorry to miss the fun in scotland this year. i hope everyone will send me their own video as a response so i can feel part of the action.

  • As an auld timer, I thought this rendition worthy of congratulations - very well done pal.......

  • Pure, dead, brilliant!

  • this was amazing!

  • glad you enjoyed.

  • Well done!

...from British Columbia (formerly New Caledonia), Canada

  • well done sir this is really good poetry reading

    it was really enjoyable

possible sud be in britains got talent? lol

    stabbin haggis:D

  • Worthy of my five stars. I hope to memorize this prayer one day so I can rightfully stab into my haggis.

  • Fantastic!

  • Yum, I want a bite!

Definitely the best "Ode to a Haggis" on YouTube, a pair with Lionel's and your "A Man's a Man."

  • thanks papa, i hope this means you are our newest subscriber.. i look towards your further comments.

  • Actually, I hadn't subscribed, though your "A Man's a Man" and "wee lassie sings" have been on my favorites list for months. I've fixed that, though, and am now a subscriber.

Interesting thing about your "Haggis" video is that I first watched it several months ago and didn't recall it as anything special until I watched it again last night. Lionel is just so sincere. Seeing him enjoy eating the haggis at the end is the clincher.

  • i can vouch for the fact he really did enjoy it!

  • he really enjoyed it!

  • That was brilliuant really really enjoyed it well done sir

  • Wow, that was incredible! Three cheers to you and to Lionel.

I just had a great idea: You should put together a clip of different people stabbing haggis, hahaha.

  • yeah atombomzombietron, ill get right on that haggis stabbing video..

  • Hi Lionel,

Great ode to a Haggis!!! Now please send me some Haggis from Wallace's, I have withdrawel symptoms. And while you are at it some oat cakes too, please!!! Oh and a special request could you please put your version of: Come By the Hills and Caledonia on youtube. Recipe for a good cry lol!!! Hope you are all good and behaving lol!!!

    love from The Caribbean

  • OK, I'll accept that. Probably the best on YouTube so far. Thanks for this.

  • LOL! "Opinions expressed are not those of the director."

  • et740, im not a blood thirsty scot.. im a mostly raw vegan who wouldnt even consider eating a haggis.. however, i will happy shoot those who have different views and lifestyles than my own.

  • Sure, I respect that. Just ironic, that's all.

  • yeah et740, i agree, it is ironic.

  • excellent, just excellent

  • Of all the versions of "Address tae a Haggis" that are on YouTube, this is easily the best. I've seen probably half a dozen or so by now, and no recitation is as clear and understandable and true to the spirit of this poem as this performance.

  • id love to hear about any RB dinners you went to and if anyone has a video that was shot at one, ill accept it as a response video.

  • Excellent video. I have only ever been to one Burns supper - when I was living in Brunei of all places!. Of course haggis was served. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it.

  • first class - thanks!

  • I've seen this performed -- in Scotland -- and this performance is, I think, better than than one was!

  • Brilliantly done - well done!

  • i am really feeling sad that i am missing all the robert burns festivisties in scotland tonight..

  • very well done!

  • This has given me the appropriate pronunciation guide for tonight. Cheers! :D

  • I'll be having haggis this nicht, and it shall be Very Good.

Well recited sir, I'll be thinking of this while I'm struggling with notes on pieces of paper.

  • ... beautiful....

  • Very Very Good !!

  • well recited sier!

  • can anyone tell me the exact date of robert burns day?

  • January 25th

  • thanks morgancol, i wish i was going to be there.. i have really gained a great appreciation for robert burns after making these three videos.

  • I could murder a haggis after watching that. The Bard would surely approve.

  • happy robert burns day, my scottish friends! wish i was there with you to indulge in a veggie haggis!

  • I knew lionel long time ago in the biddy days, when we were all so young!! Glad to see you again still doing what you do best and still looking like a clan cheif !! Happy New Year To You And Yours Love From The Isle Of Mull XX

  • A Haggis is the only suitable dish, cos a man's a man for aw that!!!

    Saor Alba!

  • A haggis is the only suitable dish, cos a man's a man for aw that!

    Saor Alba!

  • That was a tasty performance!!! Long live haggis and Scotland!

  • This is RIVETING! I would pay to see it live. :D

  • wow, now that was a story with emotions! I could barely sit still while watching it. I was grateful for the subtitles!

    RevNan

  • Amazing performance, well you are worthy a grace my friend.

  • Brilliant brilliant brilliant. Thankyou, and that looked to taste great!

  • Brilliant, and thanks for the modern translation !

  • Not a bad attempt at Addressing The Haggis, although you don't have the Ayrshire accent to carry it off as it should be delivered.

I am the old master of this and I know my subject.

You need to concentrate on getting energy and drive into your delivery. This is a dramatic piece which needs to be taken forcibly to the audience.

Thank you for a good attempt.

  • aftonlad, i checked your channel to see your superior version but didnt find one.. its oh so easy to criticize when you havent even made the attempt yourself.. why not send me your video when you perfect it so you can show us how its done?

  • Snap!

  • What a pity you have got so touchy Taragolden, you need to learn to identify constructive comment. As someone who has read Burns poetry and Addressed the Haggis at major Burns Suppers for over 50 years I think I am entitled to offer help and advice.

I thanked the reader for making a good attempt but it is clear that he would benefit greatly from listening to an expert. I have a cassette with Harold Wightman doing it and will copy it for you if you wish.

  • you may think im touchy.. i just think im standing up for one of my people.. who trusted me to do this shoot. as for you being an expert, i certainly havent seen that confirmed in any way. do you have a wesbite or testimonials?Ill pass on the harold wrightman tape.. again id like to see a video of YOU doing it.. you must know someone with a video camera..

  • I've never had haggis before, but I heard it tastes as good as it sounds, so is it any good?

  • don't buy out of the asia etc buy it from butchers, it taste much better if they have it

  • I agree with Aftonlad. This piece should be delivered with a flourish.

  • Agreed.

  • What in the hell is wrong that guy?

  • woo!!! Scots have the fucking sexiest accents ever!! Haggis is the shit!

  • boy you have got a beautifull voice an so much passion but words uhm are not my style my respect and regards

  • he got the passion but is not my style because i do not like his words enyway my respect for him and his poetry lost my appetite. paz universal

  • im not a big fan of haggis but my brother loves it. where in scotland are you from it sounds like glasgow.... my parents grew up just outside edinburg...bonnyrigg and dalkeith... i go there every summer to visit my granny's...I REALLY LIKE ST. ANDREWS though

  • scottiehottie, are you really a hottie? and who decided that?uh yeah lionel lives in southern scotland in a small and cute town called moffat.

  • i love Moffat Toffee. just thought i'd let you know. 8D

  • yeah, there is a candy store there, and the owners are super nice.. they filled chases pockets full of candy for his walk. if anyone reading this goes to moffat stop in and say hi to lionel, the candy store and buccclegh arms, the hotel that sponsored us...

  • Nice to look, good to eat but don't forget me larrykakatan really for your own good!

  • I could probably do two whole lines from memory....

  • i dont believe you.. ill be you would do a fantastic job and if you improvise, well thats cool too..

  • There are very few poets in the world that epitomise so thoroughly the spirit of a nation like Robert Burns.

Always a pleasure to listen to the musiscality of Rabby's verses, thanks!

  • Hi Tara -

I've seen this vid - I love it! And thanks for your niceness re: my "For No One."

  • wat a fud nice stab to teh haggis btw peach

  • Was that Gaelic?

  • No, it's Scots.

  • A great rendition!

Happy Burns Night. I couldn't find a veggie haggis in the shops so made one which just happened to be vegan. Really simple & really gorgeous!!

  • how cool, i wish i could try it.. what was in it? did you guys notice robert burns day didnt make it to you tubes home page?

  • Recipe sent! Makes enough for 6 - it's nice cold too.

My dad cried at the poetry as usual! He never makes it through the meal without crying!! then laughing at himself crying!

  • Necht, Nicht, T-necht hecht

  • this was so good to see. fantastic work. congratulations. you ´re a great actor

  • very good recitation, will enjoy my haggis for dinner the nicht!!

  • I saw "So You Married an Axe Murderer" a few weeks ago and they mention haggis. I felt so informed. Thanks Tara and Lionel. Happy RB Day!

  • happy robert burns day!

  • every child of scotland and of scottish descent should watch this video.. fantastic!

  • Well done.

  • thanks for your comment and subscribing, artistireland.

  • Very nice, the translation a bit out though, kep it up, good stuff.

  • Thanks for sending me the link - adding the subtitles was a great idea for us non-Scots speakers, especially those living in "Bonnie Scotland" ! Hope you like my Toast to the Lassies - alas, not in the native tongue !

  • I love the way you put the translation on the scene it certainly makes it more enjoyable in the bits which are not so easy to understand and for me it is much more enjoyable. Best address to the Haggis I have ever seen and heard and here in Scotland I've heard plenty!

    congrats Val Parsley

  • thanks val(theatrecameo) thanks quite a compliment coming from you.. for all you robert burns fans, check vals page for a great version of ode to a mouse...she plays aunt betty!

  • haggis is a very good dish who cares whats in it its so expensive here that i only get it once a year at the burns supper

  • hi folks, theres a modern vegetarian version of haggis, very popular I'm told- its made by McSweens of edinburgh, from who knows what ?????????

  • but lioenl, would YOU eat it?

  • Theres not much I wouldn't try, but i haven't tasted it yet

  • Fantastic! Love the disclaimer.

  • well. as much as i love scotland, robert burns and lionel, i eat mostly a raw vegan diet,, which makes this vid a tad ironic for me..

  • Wi' Burns' nicht up 'n' comin' a word o' warnin' : this may be a rural myth, but I was told of an Address where a big chefs' knife was provided for wavin' aboot for extra drama, ken, an' at "cut ye up wi' ready sleight", the addresser whacked the knife into the beast, which burst, the plate underneath cracked in twa, an' the blade lodged intae the wifie's good table. Tak tent.

  • Love it! It still makes me laugh during certain points at the disconnect between what I'm hearing/reading. Very entertaining, though I'll not be giving up my vegetarianism for a haggis any time soon:-)

  • Wow...maybe I should try some haggis...

(I've never tried it before, either.)

    My sister is in Edinburgh,

but I'm not sure if she's tried it...yet.

However, that was a great video.

    Well done!

  • well done thanks for makeing my day

  • sergiemax. you are most welcome.. thanks for commenting.. it also makes my day( and lionels, too) to hear what you think of our work..

  • that was excellent - inspired me to try and find a few scots poems, songs and such to learn. Dont know enough about my own country.

  • Ah! I LOVE it!!! to master a scottish accent, let alone the wits to try a bit of haggis, is truly to follow a challenging bliss.

;) love it tara. well done! i know we've never met, but i miss you! bizarre. I should make my own sort of pilgrimage and visit you sometime during my frigid winter.

  • thankyou

  • Wow, I wanna try some!

  • No Wimpy Food!!!

  • hey ken,, just a few of the words( including wimpy) were my own personal interpretation... i also thought up "hey god"..

  • My favorite Haggis is Paul Haggis.

  • Lovvvvvve this! Wonderful delivery.

  • thnks for posting,,

    haggis??

  • Quite astonishing actually; his delivery, animation, exclamations, none the less Scottish style. He's a bard unintentional.

  • its even more astonishing to realize we had just met the day before,, i had decided AGAINST shooting this, as we didnt HAVE a haggis and lionel went to the store, bought one and called me at my hotel to say. lets film it.. and away we went.. hes a great talent..

  • Oh, I believe he's a bard intentionally, by self-directed study and training.

  • You are correct. I guess my humor needs charification. My reverse comment meant that he is a real bard. :)

  • Humor is much more difficult without live delivery available, isn't it? I'm a student of Bardry (doing my Master's thesis now) and Lionel's work is wonderful! He's helped me find some lovely Rob't Burns work; on his advice I bought (and enjoy immensely!) both the Collected Works and a lesser-known book of Bawdy Ditties. Whew! And I thought the 1960's were wild!

  • Very cool,.. Ode

    thanks for posting

    Dan

  • Mmmm! --and I'm vegetarian! Love the translation, and Lionel is so committed to doing it well and right.

  • marykmusic.. im am really hoping someone will come up with a raw vegan recipe..( i know im probably shocking the true scots with that comment)

  • Very good. What's a haggis?

  • oh.. joanne.. i thought i had everything covered but i see i missed an essential point.. a haggis is a sheeps stomach filled with morsels like guts, and intestines.. a few oats and other things..

  • LOL That's worst than I imagined!

  • Wow, sounds incredible! But I'm glad to have the translation!

    Thanks for posting, Tara!

    Duke

  • thanks duke.. i'm glad you liked it.. it took me almost three hours to get the translation and text right..
