This is a delight to find. I lived in Hawaii as a kid from 1957-59 and I remember this song. It is a standard for Howlies learning to hula dance, but there was a local entertainer name Lucky Luck who had a variety show who would sing this all the time. At that time the only live television was local. Everything else was film flown in from the mainland.
Hey, you got good eyes! Yes it's an Oscar Schmidt acoustic/electric. It's the first real uke I've ever had, my first one was a first act from Walmart. When I bought it about 4 years ago, I assumed it strung up and tuned like the bottom 4 strings of a guitar and I was very disappointed with it. At some point later, I discovered it tuned up completely different from a guitar so I had to learn some different chord shapes. The first two ukulele songs I put on youtube were on that uke.
You are right!!! This is a fabulous rendition of the Hukilau.... I saw this on FB and had to come and say Hi! Great job.... you've inspired me to learn this song.... Care to share your tab/chords? Thanks for my smile today!!!
Thanks for your kind comments. But it's been a while since I've done a "live show". The last was about 7 months ago at the mexican restaurant down the street from my house.
I had such smiles! Thank you for posting this; it is adorable.
I lived in Kailua Oahu for four years (early 60's) and my Dad bought me an authentic grass skirt and top, and I learned this hula dance first thing. I still have this ensemble and ~ the "printed by permission" words to the song.
Glad to have typed in Hukilau Song....nice end to my night.....
Wonderful! I was there in the late 60's 6 times, a week at a time with the Navy. I made 3 WesPac cruises during Viet Nam and the high light of each cruise was the lay over in Hawaii in each direction for a week. I'm glad you enjoyed the song.
Hi, I just found out you left a comment and asked a question. I don't have my uke with me right now but sometime today I'll get it out and figure out the strum pattern and post that for you,ok? Thanks for watchin'.
Thanks you so much for your kind comments. I'm so glad you like my version of the Hukilay Song. Are you a musician or do you have any videos on youtube? What part of Austria do you live in? Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a happy, happy New Year!!!!
Thanks so much for your kind comment! And I agree with you about it being the best song in the world. You know, my Hawaiian Hapa Haole videos get more views than my other videos but when I play my music at the mexican restaurant down the street, my ukulele songs don't seem to be as popular at my regular old time country and rock n roll and I really don't understand that except for the difference in the size of the audience. Anyway, have a great week-end and thanks again.
okay --- just want you to know that you cost me $70! I went out and bought a uku and I am learning how to play it.......thank you!!!!! I have play the paion, organ, trupet, trombone, and madoline --- so this is going to be a fun instrument for me.....i am sooooo excited.
Thanks for the suggestions! Do you play any Grissman and Garcia? Their "Not For Kids Only" CD is about the best folkie album I've ever heard along with the sound track from "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou". How 'bout postin' some of yours? And thanks again for the kind comments.
Keep'm coming.....I love playing and singing the old songs ---
Try "Won;t You Ride In My Little Red Wagon" --- that is another fun song that I think you would love and enjoy.....Thank you for sharing your gift of music with all of us.
Thanks so much for watchin' and enjoyin' my video. It's the best of my hapa haole songs and the one that gets the most attention. I've sung it at the Mexican restaurant down the street and hope to do so again real soon. Thanks so much for your kind comment.
That's Great!! I'm currently looking at this song as my coworkers are "coaxing" me into playing it at a work event. You Sir, are my inspiration. Can you tell me what key you are playing and some of the chords you are using? Aint the Uke Grand?!?
Thanks so much for your kind comment. I'm tryin' to get up the nerve to play it at the Mexican Restaurant this Saturday evening. Sort of like open mike night. I think I've got it memorized but I'm not sure how memorized it'll be when I'm standing in front of a crowd--you know.
I'm glad you enjoy my video. This is my favorite Hapa Haole mele and yes it is the most fun to sing. I'm gonna check out Jack Owens this afternoon 'cause if he wrote the Hukilau song then he's one of my favorite composers.
Thank you so much Cheryl for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my "music" and I hope to add more soon. I'll try to get in a Hank Williams tune also. Michele and I hope to see you soon.
we all love your version of the hukilau song. Our whole office, mainly my colleague Ralph and I watch your clip and listen to it when we want to feel better.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. My wife and I really enjoy making the videos and it just made our day to hear that when you want to feel better you listen to my clip. We all need that sometime.
I like your version and your shirt, but you're missing the diminished chords so I made my own version. Ciao from Italy's one man band...
