  • i'm studying speech pathology(sent by my government to OZ)..n terribly having hard time. OZs slang is not a joke, seriously. thx 4 the vid nway,.

  • rooty tooty point 'n shooty - gun

  • Why so many accents?

  • i dont think ive ever heard of a stopey pole though... then again im in melbourne so...

also i dont turn my th's into f's. might be some sort of SA thing but yeah.

  • @Weaselwoman56 This video is pretty damn terrible and not too correct now that I look back (erm... only a year ago ;)). But you're right, things like th's into f's aren't in perfect distribution across AU, and people who do it (like moi) don't even do it all the time. Works well though if you want to come across as stereotypical australian though or aren't used to it ;)

(Yeah, Stobey poles are SA only)

  • im australian! whoot! go australia!!! i never realised how hard the australian accent is to copy.... its kinda half english half american and a little bit of... something else.... YAAAY I LOVE AUSTRALIA!! hahahaha!!!! i wanna go to america.

  • @Weaselwoman56 I wanna go back to Oz...

  • Why does everyone salivate over the Australian accent? Ok. Lets get this straight. The words we say are probably the same. We don't wack a million mates in between every sentence, nor do we do the same with G'Day. Try and replicate the Australian accent AND YOU WILL FAIL.

  • I rarely hear "friend"/"buddy" instead of "mate" when the two are interchangeable (champ, bro and man though do exist alongside it though, but that's really just masculine-talk, dunno what chicks use), and is there actually anything else we use for that sort of greeting other than the basic "hello"/"g'day" and whatnot (other than just skipping the greeting)? :)

    Perhaps a subcultural thing.

Anyway, others copying AU accent/colloquialisms is better than AU kids trying to copy US accents.

  • are you part kiwi

  • @predatorrules1

Nah not at all, but I think I may have been listening to Jango Fett/Jengo Fitt in Star Wars too much ;)

  • wow..i want to have an accent like yours...thanks mate...i hope you post a lot of videos about Australian accent..thanks..

  • this is so interesting... i wanna have an accent like yours...

  • other countries say 'heaps good' too, don't they?? :S

  • i want to go to Australia just to get a boyfriend to be quite honest...i could listen to you talk for days :)

  • Whoah, somehow this ended up in the spam pile, my bad - and thanks, but while I personally could listen to myself for days I don't think anyone else would want to put themselves in that kind of torture ;)

  • hi , i have a school project i'm working on for a drama piece and one of the characters that i play requires an australian accent can you help me out a little?

  • Well, short of searching on youtube and figuring out how our accent works, there are a few ways to copy it.

I'll PM you with some links and stuff coz it wont fit in here :)

  • @chrissomerry thanks mate.xx

  • ive seen lots ppl in NSW say ''heaps good''. and wat about bugger?

  • Yeah Ive noticed that too (a bit like saying "yallow" instead of "yellow" - its meant to be a victorian thing but I hear it everywhere). And crap did I forget bugger?! :O

  • yes u did im pretty sure u forgot bugger lol yea wen i answer as fone i say it like ''yallow'' lol and im a queenslander! o.0

  • @kateluvsjas yes, we say "heaps good" A LOT. using the word heaps has become a habit.

  • fuckin saffa

  • My mate called my ex a bloke.

    (He's from America).

That was bloody hilarious, laughing about it for weeks.

And how sometimes the 't' pretty much becomes silent when talking, happens alot.

I do it all the time. :D

  • Hahaha! Hope he didn't call your ex that while she was around! :P

  • Well, thanks. (:

  • I love this. You guys have the awesomest accents :)

  • Cheers mate! You guys (I'm assuming you're from the US) have awesome accents too - and you guys can do proper cowboy accents too, we just sound ridiculous when trying them :)

  • @yalookgoodthough i agree, Australian accent is the best. i can't wait to move there.

  • Yeah, but think about it, we cant even stand Terri irwin say "crikey mate!" it just sounds so corny!!, comming from a yank, imagine 10 yanks stopping you on the street and saying "excuse me mate, looking for a shrimp shop, any around here?" at this point i reply "yeah, just up the road" and giggle at the confusion on their faces, hehe, even worse my younger bros a Wigga!, so i gotta put up with, "yo dawg, gotta go to my peeps nigga" what?!?!?!.

  • you local round here mate?, thats grouse!, um yeah i just mean im tired of the 16 year old youth gangs going round like Homies and gangstas saying "yo nigga!" or Ai'te!, ya just wanna punch em out and say its "MATE!!!!!!!", not nigga, no i was not talking bout ya vid, just the fact we are loosing our own language.

  • Yeah i'm a local, Pt Willunga actually :P

Haha I feel your pain, I can't tell whether it's worse in Rundle mall or noarlunga though haha. Hopefully over the years there'll be less US TV here downunder and the Aussie language will have a fighting chance.

I find it funny though that I'm hearing more americans say 'mate' than 15 year old aussies, at least we're causing someone to say it :P

  • I think its crap!, cos we are loosing our identity as a nation with the younger generation, traditional Aussie-isms are being tossed away for kids to say "ai'te" or "yeah biatch!", what happened to "Grouse!" (Good, awsome!) or "Geez mate", Its weird cos its the suberb of Nourlunga not downtown bronx!!, its still worse when your own sister greets with with, whats happening....Nigga!!, i mean if she said that in the bronx shed probly get shot!. i think its a shame. Americanisation is crap!.

  • You think americanisms are crap or my video is crap? I mean, I wouldn't disagree either way :P

Personally I don't mind some americanisms, but half-baked ones like 'whassup nigga/homie' etc just get annoying. I dunno tho bout Noarlunga, at night it feels like downtown NY (although daytime its nice)... Can't wait till they upgrade the train line to seaford :P

  • @chrissomerry i agree with the homie/nigga thing to.i am not Australian but i sure love to be one. Australia rocks!!!

  • i want MORE!!!

  • Currently I am staying at a friends house while I find a new place to rent so my trusty eye toy camera is in storage. But when I get it out / buy a better one I'll make a new vid :)

  • Thanks for this video, I found some very interesting things.

  • No problem, glad you got something out of it :)

  • Nice video!

It's always interesting to see the difference between British English, Canadian English, Australian English, and US English, especially slang, don't ya think?

  • Cheers, glad you liked it! :)

I agree with you there, and I'd also say it's interesting what the future holds for our unique regional varieties, especially with increased globalisation, particularly with recent U.S. influences on general Australian English via television ;)
