Deism is the belief that something caused the universe. It requires a little faith. Atheism is the belief that nothing caused the universe, and likewise requires a little faith. What atheism requires is an absolute knowledge of everything within the universe. Which, I'm sure will never be known. Deism makes no claims about what the cause is, because it can't make claims, because we do not know. It is on a sliding scale with agnosticism and atheism. I don't think you do deism any justice.
But there is a decent argument for Deism: Whatever it is that bridges the abyss between us and the Great Big Nothing is the only thing with any right to be called "God" by definition. The proof it does that is Here We Are.
"Its the faith that there's something supernatural, and the gall to say nothing about it"
AHughman08 i hope you read this...such a fucking common mistake about deism. read the quote...read it again. see anything wrong with it? its backwards, completely backwards. we (deists) don't make claims about IT because it IS supernatural: it takes GALL to make claims, to assume that you can have knowledge that cannot possibly be obtained by humans..aka theists. sigh..so many misconceptions about us.
I agree with you on your basic point so wouldn't you be best describing yourself as agnostic on the issue of deism and atheistic on the issue of theistic notions of god?
I mean surely stating that a deity exists IS a claim, is it not? I cannot see how you can be a deist without claiming the existence of a deity.
to someone like me, its not possible to claim that a deity exists (some sort of creative force or intelligence) as it is apparent. it would be like claiming that i am typing a response to your reply right now...it simply is. i really don't understand what seperates people like me from atheists, i KNOW that there "is something going on here"
i cannot NOT be amazed and stunned at the simple fact that ANYTHING exists at all...and considering that everything exists blows my mind.
I see, you are one of these folk that cannot imagine anything can exist without a controlling intelligence but you can imagine a controlling intelligence can exist without anything?
I find that proposition as hard to entertain as anything else my brain can conjure up but, sarcasm aside, i accept that you feel different and my original statement isincorrect - you are clearly not an agnostic with regard to deism.
'Control' was a bad choice of word and i understand your concern over it. I simply was trying to get away from using the word 'create' or variants thereof because it is not clear to me that this word means anything outside of time.
Allow me to rephrase it:
"I see, you are one of these folk that cannot imagine anything can exist without an intelligence but you can imagine an intelligence can exist without anything?"
I get the feeling you will still take issue with this but maybe we will get
No. What i am suggesting is that you have suggested you are amazed that anything exists at all and, I assume, you are suggesting that you find it inconceivable that anything can exist without a deity. My point is that you seemingly don't find it as amazing that a deity can exist without 'anything'.
Personally I find it a whole lot easier to envisage immaterial 'stuff' existing without sentience than sentience existing without 'stuff'.
Your an idiot. Atheist have faith in no god just as much as a deist has faith in the idea that a god started everything. There is no proof that a god didn't start everything just as much as there is for a random begining. Both are possible answers to a question that has not been answered. Both side's just pick an answer that makes rational sense to them and goes on the journey called life, to discover answers.
Well, you mean you're, but I imagine your comprehension of English is little, at best.
Atheists do not have faith in no god. We have disbelief in a god. Your inability to understand this also shows your inability to comprehend the English language. Or logic for that matter.
There is no proof that god didn't start everything because you cannot prove nothing. Again, failure of logic and English. My suggestion to you: Go back to school.
FUCK!!!! YOUR one of those people. With out proper English you can't understand anything!
btw this is youtube, not webmd.
Look up the word belief and faith then look at what you just said dumb ass. Don't bitch at me about English on youtube then turn around and show an absolute lack of understanding when it comes to simple English words. run on!!!!
I wish you could step outside your mind and see how much of a simpleton you are. Asserting your belief as a fact is a failed logic.<- your logic
Your retort was hilarious, as it further proved my point that you know little of the English language. It's okay if you're still in grade school, or if English is a foreign language to you, but I doubt either of these are the case.
Also, what belief am I asserting as a fact? I've done no such thing. All I said was that you cannot disprove that of which does not exist. If your god did exist, there would be absolutely no struggle on the end of the theist to prove so.
You haven't presented any facts! just your belief. how cant you see that? Your just too blind to see the failure of your logic. You keep bitching about english punctuation on some bullshit site. Fuck if i care about writing, $ is in math/science. Who cares! You were being a jack ass and I pointed it out... Quit using your belief as the answer for the begining of everything, its just your belief not the answer. Although its plausible, just as something creating everything is a plausible answer.
If I'm a jackass for pointing out that you're an ignoramus, then I am a proud jackass at that.
What facts am I suppose to be presenting? You haven't even said what it is that I apparently believe.
It's also kind of ironic t hat you would tell someone to stop using their belief as the answer for the beginning of everything. Isn't that the point of belief?
How you come up with this nonsense, is really beyond me.
And then, you made this other Video with the black christian minister you had put in this other Video.
Didn't we already say, that God is dead, and that the Danger of the Bible has been eliminated?
I have put mine away, ... for the rest of my Life. I will never open it again, and now, I don't assert anything, but that doesn't mean, that I must deprive myself from «logical thinking».
The problem with both parables is that they assume that we can only understand the world through sense experience which begs the question.
Does anyone know when Flew wrote the the parable discussed in this video? It it was before he became a deist, does anyone know what he has to say about it now?
I don't think that either make that assumption. I think they say "it is useless to assert anything without reason to assert". thats all. Not "your claim is untrue because it's can't be sensed"
I don't know what flew would say about his parable now. But my guess would be that he HAS evidence to back up his claim because the reason he became a deist was because of irreducible complexity, which he thought was valid evidence.
when we realize I.C. is NOT valid, his parable still stands.
If you are not assuming an empiricist approach, to knowledge, then how are things falsifiable and testable? All examples of trying to test the God hypothesis in your parables seem to be based on some sort of empirical test (e.g. bloodhounds, electric fences etc.).
You are assuming an 18th century definition of Deism. Here is a link to an essay explaining modern Deism. If you are going to critique something critique it for what it is, not what it was.
You should. It is being considered for inclusion in a scholarly work on Deism. You should also actually read it. That you failed to address the contradictions that arise from materialism (particularly the many worlds theory, which may be the only way it can explain the reported results of EPR experiments, and the conservation laws) the essay examines about is telling.
Yeah I often get called that name by people who think that BOOM intelligence spawned out of nothing.
See, you're still swinging around with sky-hooks for explanations. We materialists got an actual crane to explain how intelligence can arise from non-sentient matter. You're still there with the theists using the same arguments they do with your whole 'first mover' argument. It's bogus.
Speaking of clouds, Genesis 1 always cracks me up. In it, the writer paints a picture where the place that rain comes from is higher in the heavens than the sun, moon and stars.
Oh, you silly Christians....The first chapter of their book is totally jacked, yet they continue in their delusion with no doubts.
By the way, Cutler and Hester are going to rip apart Pitts in week two, no matter how much faith you have! (see what I did there?)

hmm, close, but no cigar.
when did i ever say or even remotely suggest anything at all about control?
you seem more respectful and open minded then most, but still, your bringing your own assumptions/baggage to the table. (almost everyone does it)
oh and this part i don't understand what you mean:

i don't follow...do you mean without evidence perhaps...? (if you care to clarify, if not thats ok ;)

You said the claim in the story was nonfalsifiable. However, it is falsifiable if you prove the gardener has a logical contradiction.
If you are looking for an intangible being with barbed wire and dogs, you might as well be trying to measure temperature with a ruler.
However, there must be some valid arguments if your to provide a reason for believing the intangible being exists.
