Personal Take: Deism

Deism is the belief that something caused the universe. It requires a little faith. Atheism is the belief that nothing caused the universe, and likewise requires a little faith. What atheism requires is an absolute knowledge of everything within the universe. Which, I'm sure will never be known. Deism makes no claims about what the cause is, because it can't make claims, because we do not know. It is on a sliding scale with agnosticism and atheism. I don't think you do deism any justice.

But there is a decent argument for Deism: Whatever it is that bridges the abyss between us and the Great Big Nothing is the only thing with any right to be called "God" by definition. The proof it does that is Here We Are.

I agree with you on your basic point so wouldn't you be best describing yourself as agnostic on the issue of deism and atheistic on the issue of theistic notions of god?

I mean surely stating that a deity exists IS a claim, is it not? I cannot see how you can be a deist without claiming the existence of a deity.

to someone like me, its not possible to claim that a deity exists (some sort of creative force or intelligence) as it is apparent. it would be like claiming that i am typing a response to your reply right now...it simply is. i really don't understand what seperates people like me from atheists, i KNOW that there "is something going on here"

'Control' was a bad choice of word and i understand your concern over it. I simply was trying to get away from using the word 'create' or variants thereof because it is not clear to me that this word means anything outside of time.

Allow me to rephrase it:

No. What i am suggesting is that you have suggested you are amazed that anything exists at all and, I assume, you are suggesting that you find it inconceivable that anything can exist without a deity. My point is that you seemingly don't find it as amazing that a deity can exist without 'anything'.

Personally I find it a whole lot easier to envisage immaterial 'stuff' existing without sentience than sentience existing without 'stuff'.

Your an idiot. Atheist have faith in no god just as much as a deist has faith in the idea that a god started everything. There is no proof that a god didn't start everything just as much as there is for a random begining. Both are possible answers to a question that has not been answered. The problem with both parables is that they assume that we can only understand the world through sense experience which begs the question.

Does anyone know when Flew wrote the the parable discussed in this video? It it was before he became a deist, does anyone know what he has to say about it now?

I don't think that either make that assumption. I think they say "it is useless to assert anything without reason to assert". thats all. Not "your claim is untrue because it's can't be sensed"

I don't know what flew would say about his parable now. But my guess would be that he HAS evidence to back up his claim because the reason he became a deist was because of irreducible complexity, which he thought was valid evidence.

If you are not assuming an empiricist approach, to knowledge, then how are things falsifiable and testable?  All examples of trying to test the God hypothesis in your parables seem to be based on some sort of empirical test (e.g. bloodhounds, electric fences etc.).

You should. It is being considered for inclusion in a scholarly work on Deism. You should also actually read it. That you failed to address the contradictions that arise from materialism (particularly the many worlds theory, which may be the only way it can explain the reported results of EPR experiments, and the conservation laws) the essay examines about is telling.

You said the claim in the story was nonfalsifiable. However, it is falsifiable if you prove the gardener has a logical contradiction.

If you are looking for an intangible being with barbed wire and dogs, you might as well be trying to measure temperature with a ruler.

However, there must be some valid arguments if your to provide a reason for believing the intangible being exists.
