@AdrainAugust .. hi adrian .. =) .. i didn't know there was a movie until someone else mentioned it to me here in the comments. i don't think i'm up for the movie cause i found the book was really sad. i don't like sad/tragic movies and avoid them if possible .. =S .. i did think the book was well written though and that the author is a great story teller. when you say you remember the walnut trees, is this from the book/moive or were you actually in kabul?
Your goal seems like a good one. i need to finish 2 books I am reading=) but 1st I have to get 2 scrapbooks done. Good review. Not really sure i will read this one =)
@tweetnes ... i hope i'll be able to stick to it. i have trouble mainitng long-term gials! LOL .. ;D .. can't you read and scrapbook at the same time? ~haha~ .. ;D .. what 2 books are you reading right now? are they good?
I love how you broke your review down in to sections and how you said three things you liked about the book. Jim's review was good...but after listening to your review...I may actually try to read the book....just for the story telling and cultural references. WOW....all those good things and then you didn't like it......maybe I don't want to read it....LOL....yea...probably not!!! I joke with WGW about Christian Romance but do you like that type book...if so Redeeming Love by francine Rivers
@76gottaloveme ... oh tabatha, i am so glad you liked the review. i didn't have a clue how to do it and it took me 8 takes to get this! LOL .. =S .. you might want to give it a try and if it gets too miserable for you, well, you can always just close it up! .. =) .. i use to read christian romance when i was in my late teens and early 20s. i enjoyed it then but i haven't read it since. and now i avoid romantic novels b/c they depress me! LOL .. ;D
Actually, my mother read it first and recommended it to me... I was not disappointed with her assessment of it. I ended up giving it back to her because she wanted some of her friends to read it... They made a movie of it too. The movie was faithful to the book...
@phekwig ... i'm glad you enjoyed the book! i just recently heard from another youtuber that there is a movie. i think i'll pass on it .. =S .. too sad for me .. =(
@cheekychickenhead ... i've heard a couple good reviews about the movie from other youtubers. but, i didn't even know there was a movie until just a couple of weeks ago .. =S
@jasminequeentagaholi ... hi jasmine! it was in many ways but it is also really draining too .. =S .. so, if you ever read it, just be prepared for that! .. =)

@dagocleo ... glad you enjoyed the book review dc! .. =D .. i heard about the movie just the other day from another youtuber. they said it was very poignant! .. =)
@dreamer72fem ... oh yeah!!!! i'm already reading it!! i'm in the middle of chapter 21 right now! (that's not quite half-way through the book!). it's a super interesting and very intriguing read so far! .. =D
Are there any pictures in the book? :) You and Jim read too much! LOL Great review Katie, I could lie and say I was going to read it but I won't! Have a sparkling day.
@Fightdog ... well hello stranger! .. ;D .. always wonderful to hear from my favourite big dog! LOL .. =P .. sorry, no pictures in the book .. *sigh* .. what? you aren't going to make a mad dash to the nearest bookstore and buy it! clearly my review couldn't have been all that great! LOL .. ;D .. i don't blame you. i'm sure you've got better things to do with your time like pushing around old folks, making little girls cry and getting mary into trouble at the farm store! right? .. ~haha~ .. ;D
great review...I loved The Kite Runner. It's one of those books that stays with you long after it's over. It's such a wonderful and engaging read! --but not "fun" --definitely not a feel-good chucklefest.
@FromUnderTheRock ... thanks buck! .. =) .. this book will definitely stay with me for a long time. maybe all my life! you are right though, it's definitely NOT a feel good read! .. =S
Elinore Pruitt Stewart is her name. there is an audio file free at LibriVox. Her's are named Letters of a Woman Homesteader. I read them online somewhere...can't find them now. She wrote wonderful letters, humor and no filter. haha
I will look for the name of the lady's diary and letters that were published .. she came west to wyoming/utah area settled in a very harsh place. she was amazing. her letters were gripping to me. couldn't put them down. my memory leaks..so i have forgotten her name... oy.
Oopspaw's Book Club...awesome! I'm a huge nerd...I make a trip to the local Border's book store about 3 or 4 times a week on average. My life is emotionally draining enough....I don't need it from a book as well.
@RamblinAround ... you are a huge nerd jeff? reallY? LOL .. ;D .. what do you get at the bookstore? or do you just go there to browse and read? ~haha~ .. ;D .. sorry to hear your life is emotionally draining .. =S .. mine too! but, sometimes, it's nice when it's "just" a story! LOL .. ;D
I know people who love this book and others who dislike it - it seems to depend on whether you like a complex story which has lots of twists and turns. If that is not your kind of literature then - this book is not for you.
Can I say though 24 books a year is a low figure - George W Bush read over 70 each year he was in office and he was president of the USA allegedly - it sounds a manageable target.
@johncrwarner .. i don't have the benefit of knowing anyone else who didn't like it except myself, but i wonder if you might be wrong about why people don't like the book. my complaint is NOT that it is complicated and has twists and turns. my only reason for not enjoying it as much as i had hoped was b/c it was an emotionally draining read. as for the quip about bush's reading habits and my 'low' goal, i wonder if you were insulting me or bush? .. =I
Bush - he was not running the USA he was vacationing in the White House - and I think Cheney was running the government for his pals in Haliburton.
I remember a student giving a brief book review of the Kite Runner and I lost the will to live during the book review - it felt so complex and so tightly knit so have not been tempted to read it.
It was an activity where the students were telling about a book or film they really liked in two minutes or less. after four minutes of him talking - I slowly keeled over in my seat and he stopped LOL
☼Katie☼, that was a thoughtful review of this acclaimed novel. I think a lot of what you said was how I felt about the book, too. I really had a lot of respect for it from learning about Afganistan, & I think you are right about Hosseini being a terrific storyteller. The book has many grim moments & heaviness that can weigh a person down, but I'm proud of you for getting through it. 8:39 made me laugh :) Your review had a lot of insights - bravo!! hugs, Jim
@CombatOasis ... i'm glad you think so jim. i'm relieved you share a lot of common thoughts/feeling about the book. i appreciate you listening to me complain about the book earlier on! LOL .. ;D .. you are a very good sport and very generous with your time where i am concerned! so, thank you jim!! .. =)
Reading is one of my pleasures in life. Thanks for this review. I don't think I will read it...heavy and never resolved pain is not what i like to read. Some non fiction is a big draw for me...bios etc..but this one sounds like a no for me. Thanks for the vid. great review.
@trvlbuggy ... oh, i love bios! they are soooo interesting! .. =D .. i'm sure i'll read a few this year. i prefer to read biographies about sort of obscure people (not presidents and leading ladies) and pioneers in different sorts of fields/areas! that's always cool. i like people who challenge social norms and think outside the box. they are very inspiring! .. =)
Hosseini has another book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" that tells the story of a woman who is forced to marry an older man. If "The Kite Runner" was too much for you, then his second book is definitely a no-go. There's so much more turmoil in it, and some of things that happen to the woman are even worse than some of the things that take place in "The Kite Runner". Having said that...it's still an amazing book. "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi is nowhere near that depressing haha.
@Smartass8504 ... thanks chad. i appreciate this little heads-up. i definitely can't read the thousand suns one. it would break me down. i think i will give nafisi's work a try though! .. =D
Awww haha. I absolutely loved this book. I read it a few times as an undergrad and it truly is a heart-wrenching story at times. Some of the things that happen are just so depressing and messed up that it's hard to continue. I really loved the second half, because I think it shows how much the country changed after the Soviet invasion. I think it shows the drastic changes that some radical clerics brought forth. you get a good picture of Aghanistan pre- and post-invasion.
@Smartass8504 ... heart-wrenching is right chad .. =S .. and messed up? right again! .. =< .. but, i also agree with you that it is a good picture of the contrast between life before and after the soviets invaded and then the aftermath of taliban rule. a good book for sure. just not my cup of tea! LOL .. ;D
@TheDarksEmpyrean .. those were my thoughts al last year as i watched conmbatoasis' (jim's) reviews! so, this is my year to change that! maybe you'll get inspired and pick one of these books up and have a read! who knows, eh? .. =)
