  • reminds me of the greatest and most fascinating trilogy on the planet The Lord of the Rings.

  • @Pfeffermincent The lord of the rings? The best book ever? oh deer....

  • @xxXTheKeksXxx

In my opinion it is the best trilogy (! not book !) =)

And this (fu**ing amazing) song could be definitly a song of the movie version...

  • @xxXTheKeksXxx Lmao, most definitely!:') what better book could you think of?

  • @UltimateRpGx For example alomost every Stephen King book :D

  • @xxXTheKeksXxx I don't want to start a book debate over an Ed Sheeran song xD

But yes, i agree that he is a great author and deserves every bit of praise that comes his way. However, the depth and thought that went into Lord of The Rings just blows me away: the plot was fairly basic, yet it was extremely satisfying at the same time, and so much thought went into it it's unreal. For that reason, Tolkien is my favorite author ever:')

  • @UltimateRpGx I just realized i repeated myself with the 'thought' thing, but never mind-.-

  • @Pfeffermincent I know; the first thing I thought of was Bilbo.

  • Rest in Peace, Whitney Houston and all the other Legens we've lost.

  • @LOLitsZoee I PLAAY IN A BALLAAD BAAND THIS IS BRILLIANT ENGLISH/IRISH/SCOTTISH WHATEVER I JUST LOVE HOW OLD THE SONG IS...

  • He didnt ruuin this song however I prefer Macgowan's version......I dont know why...I think this version and his voice is a little too perfect for my taste

  • You should all get a grip ! It's a song. He's a singer.

  • One of the finest irish songs ever written, taken by some english nobody and absolutely ripped asunder. He should be ashamed.

  • @gearoidbottom his parents are irish you dipshit. this is beautiful. his music is blessed and you should just shutup and enjoy the music or go hate on your mom

  • fucking perfect song and voice!!!!good job

  • i don't see why it has to become a competition, he's just singing his version. my personal favourite is this one from 'The Dubliners - The Masters' album...search The Dubliners - The Partin' Glass instead of 'Parting'

  • This is Liam Clancys song. it was played when Liam was lowered into the Earth and for ever shall be his in my eyes. Nobody else can do this song justice after hearing his version.

    RIP Liam

  • @TheWallybego I think on some levels you are quite right but with his nephew in the High Kings i think their tribute and version is just beautiful

  • nobody will ever better liam clancy at this great song.

  • I'm Irish [not that that matters a fuck in appreciation of a beautiful song] & I love this version, really beautifully done by Ed, fair play.

I would just like to say if anyone likes this check out my favourite version by Cara Dillon. Just search for it.

  • @peacefrog1916 Its Irish.

  • @peacefrog1916 no its not its irish!

  • @peacefrog1916 - The Dubliners sang this song , and Cara Dillion ... i think its Irish ?

  • @peacefrog1916 Irish

  • Beautiful song. He matches it sing by any Irish singer. This will be my funeral song....

  • Just for the record:

this is a fairly old Irish song. It's found in Scotland too, but it's principally Irish; Its intonations and general theme is very Irish.

The lyrics are sung from the viewpoint of a man who has to leave the general area. Either he has to emigrate and will never see his friends or family again, or he will soon die. The interpretation is up to the listener.

Ed Sheeran is half Irish and, looking at that mop of red hair, he'd fit in anywhere here in Ireland ;)

  • so so beautiful

  • Ed Sheeran, you beautiful beautiful man! *weeps*

  • if i die this is what will be playing on my ipod

  • @hayloudoo I disagree. If you prefer another particular version that's fine, but he is offering an alternative and why not? What would you consider the original of this age-old Irish traditional song by the way?...

  • Not as beautiful as Cara Dillon's version, sorry.

  • any guitar chords for this? would love to be able to play and sing this but i can't figure them out myself, let me know if you have any ideas cheers :)

  • I heard this song and instantly thought Irish Folk. Its beautiful. Maybe its because in chorus we learn to recognise all types of muaic from all over the world but if this was truly ruined, i dont think Id be able to recognise the Irishness.

Im American by the way :0)

  • 4 people must hate life

  • Well, I do like this version actually more than the other ones, but who cares. It's all a matter of taste, not of ruining any song which is there for different interpretations.

  • He didn't ruin this song, jackasses. If anything his rendition has more emotion than the Pogues version. MacGowan probably didn't even know where he was when he was singing it.

Sheeran does a very good job at it.

    - From an Irishman.

  • @IsaacMorrissey i'm irish and i think shane mc gowan is a disgrace to the country and nothing but a talentless and drunken fool! this is one of my favourite renditions of this song and i think its good to have traditional irish music coming back into the spotlight!

  • @TheJohnbob94

I wouldn't go so far as to say MacGowan is a 'disgrace to the country'. The Pogues do have some good songs, and he was a good songwriter in his day. Also a very intelligent man according to all sources.

But I'm sick of the ignorance of some Irish people who complain about 'plastic Paddys'. You see it regarding Irish-Americans more than English people of Irish descent, but to me, if someone's blood is Irish, they're Irish, and are right to embrace the heritage.

  • @TheJohnbob94 shane mcgowan might be a drunk but he still has one of the best christmas songs of all time and is one of the best singer songwriters ireland has ever seen

  • @IsaacMorrissey Here man just because people rather The Pogues version doesn't mean you have to take it out on MacGowan?! Shane might have history with substance abuse but don't brand him as a drunk that doesnt know what's going on around him. Some of MacGowans lyrics are some of the most poignant and beautiful to have ever been written in the folk scene. One more he GOT Irish folk music as does young Sheeran here, so please leave MacGowan alone...cheers, g'lad!

  • @elrossothematch

I said in a previous post, in reply to someone who badmouthed MacGowan, that he was a good lyricist and is highly intelligent, by all accounts. I'm not badmouthing him.

People misconstrue what I mean when I say he didn't know where he was, but a lot of commenters here accused Sheeran of ruining this song. My implication was that just because Sheeran's version is more 'gentle', if you will, doesn't mean he ruined it.

    I'm a Pogues fan too.

  • @IsaacMorrissey I also dont think people realise one of Ed's parents were Irish, he even seen Damien Rice in Ireland at one stage as a kid. Knew he was Irish by looking at the lad haha ;D

  • @IsaacMorrissey Leave MacGowan alone its his life his choice.

  • @x123Scandalx

MacGowan actually isn't as heavy a drinker as a lot of people think. I'm not badmouthing him; I'm a fan of the Pogues too. What I meant was that just because Sheeran's version is more 'gentle', if you will, doesn't mean he ruined it. Compare it to the Pogues version which is more blunt and, in my opinion, lacking emotion.

  • @IsaacMorrissey recoreded aan album in studio just after mcgowns "

celtic song" in same place??the chap drinks pints of gin dry..hed be the first to tell u although "heavy" to us is defo a soft drink to him!! :D tal

  • @IsaacMorrissey you're dead right too, The Pogues version is lacking emotion. And it's not a personal dig against MacGowan, it's an opinion, and a very good opinion :) Irish too btw.

  • reminds me of my auntie Brid singing Irish folk songs whenever we visit or she comes to England. LOVE this cover! Not ruined at all!

  • this is awful the only good thing is it might help people to find good versions such as the clancys or the dubliners

  • Ed Sheeran has ruined this song. The original is amazing to listen too, it has passion (of which a lot of Ed Sheerans songs lack in my opinion).

I was absolutely horrified to hear that he had covered this song.... classics should be left alone.

  • @rockguru123 The Pogue's rendition of the Parting Glass is akin to smearing sh!t on the Mona Lisa

  • he sounds so irish in this <3

  • F*ck I broke the replay button >.<

  • so glad he did an irish cover. I LOVE YOU ED!

  • Such A Relaxing Song!!!
