All of these characters are trapped in a decadent, moribund feudal society, the elite as much as the peasants. Such a claustrophobic feeling. Who can doubt such a top-heavy society would soon collapse under its own weight?
This production is very Kubrickian in it's style. Not just the funky 2001 ending, but the pacing and the use of encoded visual symbology. I wonder if the makers of this film were influenced by Kubrick's films in any way.
XD okay, i'm sorry but when it starts the whole blue light tunnel type thing, made me think I was watching Doctor Who.. the old dr who that had the wild gene wilder hair and striped scarf around his neck not the new one that plays now.. Watched it as a kid so that scene made me think that's what I was watching for a brief moment. XD. FLASHBACK... anyway.. awesome movie.. great effects on this at times. love the story too. AWESOME!!!
It's not so much faithlessness that causes his loneliness. Heian society was fairly "free" and polygamy was not uncommon, especially among the social elite. Genji's problem is that he's constantly searching for something that does not exist, ie his mother. So despite his prodigious list of conquests, he is ultimately unfulfilled in his search. But because he's such an emotional dandy, he can't see that his misery is of his own creation; he chooses to believe that it is the women abandoning him.
SDSakuragi has a very good point. Genji was NOT being unfaithful according to the era's societal norms....which means he was not being unfaithful. Please be aware of what you're talking about before you make such comments...although I do sympathize with you, as our society today is so different than it was in the Heian Era.

@theproplady I wouldn't say so. Heavy use of imagery has been standard in a lot of Japanese films since the 1930s.

@Motoss Then it may be a case of Kubrick being inspired by the Japanese.

@theproplady what on earth are you talking about?!
you could just as easily say it is similar to the X factor or harry potter.
