This game always frustrated me because they went away from the traditional Mech names for some reason.

Vulture = Mad Dog

Thor = Summoner

Madcat = Timberwolf

Call me old fashioned, but I wish they would've kept the old mechs.

The new names are Inner Sphere names for the same mech. The "old" names were what the Clans called them.

@Mordias There is no 'new' or 'old'. The names simply differ depending on the frces who use them. The Clans still use the OmniMechs, so they are still called Timber Wolf, Nova, Mad Dog, War Hawk, Gargoyle etc yet the IS calls them differently based on their first sensor readings of the 'mechs when the Clans first appeared.

The names you've listed aren't traditional VS New. They are Inner Sphere names VS Clan names for mechs. The Clans' Timberwolf was named the Madcat by the IS. The Clans' Summoner was called Thor by the IS. The Clans' Mad Dog was called the Vulture by the IS.

I think it mostly comes down to superior texture work. The textures in MW3 had a ton of carefully hand-painted detail, highlights, shadows, dirt and grime... whereas in MW4 the texture artists kinda cut corners, relying on the higher polycount models and more advanced shaders to do the work of making things look realistic. Turns out the technology wasn't quite there yet.

true, but I took 2 of the ERL's and all the jets off of one and loaded up on heat-sinks and multiple AMS banks. Somewhat fun build in single player, since the ERL's have such incredible power, range and accuracy. The only threat was from LRM's but 4 AMS's can dramatically thin out even twin LRM 20 salvos...

I had a Puma that I built to go ludacris speed. Whil most mechs go around 40, that thing could run in the mid to high hundreds.

My favorite to fight in is the Daishi though, overwhelming firepower.

Ahhh the memories, I remember this game, where there were like madcat/thors that everyone used while you would sometimes see a pro shadowcat for stock play, and for custom mechs, pumas all the way!!! cause that damn thing is so small to shoot while mechwarrior 4 really killed how a mech should be flexable since you can only add weapons to certain slots

Modelling is not as good in MW3, AI is terrible, and network play is full of lag. Other bugs too, but in MW4 while they improved these areas (and good AI is very very difficult to program), the MW4 missions are mostly not as interesting, atmospheric and varied, configuration and lancemate stuff takes too long, arm don't swivel any more, and you can't target specific limbs on your opponent.

I like the MW3 mechanics and sounds, but the MW4 models. Mercs SRMs were neat, and if you're any good with MW3 ACs, you get some good damage done with them.

MW3 AI pilots were all pretty useless. I never gave them anything but energy weapons. I have nightmares to this day about the campaign inventory, too.

MW3's maps were more interesting. MW4 had better decoration, and had a mission editor. I love MEDding.

I would give my lancemates the heaviest 'mechs in my inventory, maximum armor, 2 IS Heavy or ER-Heavy Lasers (1 each, torso left and right), 4 to 6 IS Medium Lasers (two in center torso, the rest torso left and right), and all the double heat-sinks I could give 'em. They still weren't worth a lot in battle, but they were better than decoys. Dangerous decoys, if you will.

The difference is the names used by the clans and the names used by Inner Sphere.

In MW3, you play Inner Sphere and all mechs are referred to by their names from that perspective, where as in MW2 you are playing clan-side and they are named via that perspective.

I've never understood the discrepancies with all of the BattleMech names in the Mechwarrior game series. For instance, why rename the Timber Wolf "Mad Cat", or the Summoner "Thor" etc.

Then again, there's a lot of MW literature out there, I suppose there's an explanation somewhere in the ridiculously detailed BattleTech universe.

they started out as the frame, but gained notoriety by loadout variants or "callsign" type names. this is not a concrete thing but it is just nicknames, thats it. the nickname usually lends its self to regions, and their influinces can be seen in the nickname. IE the timber wolf earned its designation due to its strngth, speed and general nature, its ability to support "wolves"...ETC it is possable, but i doubt you will find many "And thats how the timberwolf, earned its name." type statments.

Half-decent 'old-tech' mech, but I loved the 360deg torso rotation. Retreat at full speed and keep firing; dash past the enemy and keep firing all the way, in and out of range :)

Mech 3 gameplay was better than Mech 4, also the selection of mechs for 3 was better than 4... light mechs like the puma or the shadowcat actually had some point to them.. mech 4 has a variety of useless mechs...
