  • I think some of you are getting it wrong. Liza is an actress as well as a singer - this is her acting. It's not shouting (what do you think of LuPone if this is shouting?!). It's her interpretation of a tortured number. It's brilliant.

  • Why do I love this so much?? I can't stop watching it! I think it's quite good, but I must agree about the random "Damnit" thrown in between "for" and "me" WTF??? LOL!

  • Liza's ragged performance only reminds me that if Garland had done the movie instead of Roz Russel, she would have given the greatest musical performance ever filmed. Perhaps no one has sung it as well as Bernadette or played it as well as Lansbury, but Garland would have been the best in every way.

  • I'm am such a fan of Gypsy. The movie, the play, all forms of Gypsy! Rosalind, Ethel, Bette, Bernadette, Angela.. all of them. I've never considered Liza in the part of Rose but, gee whiz man, this is some GOOD stuff right here! WOW! Perfect!

  • laugh out loud funny, 3:26.

  • Minnelli "Rose's Turn" soars and is riveting and magnificent... a performance filled with heart & soul plus range and depth, thought I had seen this done before to the max but Liza! For whatever reason, too bad she didn't star as Liza Minnelli as Mama Rose would have been a timeless solid classic...Bravo Liza!!!

  • I don't know what all ya'lls problem was with her performance, I thought she was fantastic. I really feel like this is one of her better performances, especially compared to today. Personally, if she could give a performance like that now I'd be more than happy to see her on Broadway as Mama Rose, can you imagine!?! She's almost too old though.

  • i still dont get it.. i love ns midler but why didn't they ask ,s minellie to do that part.. ind u its still not too late

  • @rhylmark she has her detractors, but--wow--if they could cobble her together to deliver something it would be riveting. Partly in a reality TV show kind of way, I must admit; but also because of her own historical dna rooted in stage and screen, not too mention her unique talent and presence

  • @rhylmark It's too late for Liza...she couldn't sing it anymore.

  • Ethel owns the song, but Liza is tremendous here. The combination of her great voice and emotional acting puts her right behind Ethel on this song. Liza could command the stage like few ever have. She's in an elite class of live performers.

  • I have Patti's freaked out look on my face. I got through the first 26 seconds of this and had to pause it. I have seen everyone (except lansbury who i hear is GREAT) sing this song and Liza although I do love her rips this song to shreds in a VERY bad way blah, Gypsy wouldn't be right for her voice what so ever

  • She wasn´t as polished as other divas performing this, but my god, she gave a perfomance with such heart that most performers would trade their souls for :D

  • liza is such an iconic performer

  • I loved this haha. And I am usually not a huge Liza fan. I still wish We could have seen what Judy could have done with the role. That would have been something else.

  • LIZA AMAZINGGGGG

  • my my hostingdude, what little chippy you have on your shoulder. There are all sorts of entertainers who had a leg up through being born into a showbiz family. Though not a huge fan, I always find her fascinating when I come across her. I don't think she would have such a following if she didn't have some special spark. Lorna has a good voice, but little of that entertainer fire, despite her lineage. Now some people adore Nicolas Cage, and I cannot for the life of me get that one..........

  • No chip... Just an aversion to HAM.

A couple of things about Cage, who, by the way, isn't suitable for all the parts he's gotten, but has earned his stripes.

    1. Cage changed his name so as NOT to be given the leg-up. Liza basked in her parents glory and still does.

    2. Over time, Cage has gotten better. Liza's just a freaking MESS.

I don't find her fascinating when I come across her. If so, it's the kind of interest one feels when watching a train wreck. Horrible, but you can't turn away.

  • I knew it! you are..........David Gest!

    ;-]

  • LOL That was a good one! I like you better now. :-)

No, I'm not David, but if it came down to a choice between sex with Liza or David Gest, hmmm, now that would be tough...

A choice between the creepy and the dead.

But seriously, if Liza was such a someone, and so talented and wonderful, how did she end up with that screaming queen for a husband. Couldn't she have gotten someone more like the Malcolm Forbes or Rock Hudson type of wannabe-macho-but- totally-a-begging-bottom.

    Come on!

  • Comment removed

  • Why would you keep seeing her if she is always a disappointment? Sounds like a queen needs something to bitch about. Say what you may about where Liza came from, she has had a career that others have not, irrespective of liniage. You don't like HAM, but you watch a clips of Broadway shows on youtube?....'bout as hammy as it gets!

Oh, I saw Liza live last Christmas @ the Palace, and she was amazing...so there's that.

  • I stumbled across this video while searching for an Ethel Merman original video (or at least audio) of this same number.

When I saw it was Liza and read the comments (fawning Liza worship), I just had to watch.

It's like a horrible car accident you're driving by. It's the most sick and stomach-turning thing you see, but you can't look away.

Having seen Liza many times (at the choice of accompanying friends, not mine) I was curious.

She's grotesque here. Too much HAM is very bad for you.

  • @michael301 Nice spelling, Your Majesty. Don't trip on your train, me lady.

  • @hostingdude if you dont like her they why go see her? just a question. i would never waist money on someone i dont want to see, so i'm a little confused on why you did.

  • @hostingdude Why would someone pay money to see a "worthless" performer live?

  • @PhaedrusNYC

Why? Because I see as much as I can on/off/off-off Broadway. Because HotTix often doesn't have much in the way of last-minute choices on weekends. Because I was going with friends who had chosen the show. Because OTHER PERFORMERS are also in shows. Because, in one instance, I was in Vegas and I was intoxicated and I thought Liza would be fun to laugh at (that night she wasn't too bad). Because I see it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. A bad show beats good TV any day.

  • You didn't need to SAY you're engaging in Liza worship. It's plainly clear.

As you correctly pointed out, Sondheim wrote the song with Ethel in mind, so to ask me who's my fav Rose besides Ethel is like asking who's my fav Elvis besides Elvis?" Absurd Question.

Merman inhabited the part - owned it. It was written for her, and her alone. Only she could pull it off.

Are Bernadette and Bette far more talented and sexy than Liza? Oh yes!

Ethel v. Liza: I'd do Ethel dead before I'd do Liza alive.

  • I agree with all but that last comment. I find necrophilia really creepy.

  • well liza is a great singer and performer like it to you or not..it is a generall truth!!!

  • Comment removed

  • well..Liza has great vocal range a loud voice and full e motion.thats generally truth my friend.i like Ethel too,and i didnt spoke ugly to you i just said the right think. And if you dont like Liza then why you see her videos?there you will find a person that you dont like and a fans of her..go where you like!

  • Also note to Zavoliaris: I don't know where you attended music school, but Liza's vocal range is nothing impressive, and doesn't begin to compare to great singers.

I'd guess Liza's range is just over 2 octaves (I don't count growling -- no voice coach would).

She was billed at one time as having a 3 octave range, but I've never heard it, but I have heard her "cheat" and drop an octave FREQUENTLY when she couldn't nail the note.

A "great vocal range" would be at least 4+ octaves.

  • Not that Ethel Merman had any vocal range to brag about, but that's not what's at issue here in the discussion.

What's at issue in this discussion is the ABSURD Liza-worship, when she is really, really pathetic.

There is a difference between a "movie star" and an "actor." There is a difference between a "performer" and a "singer/vocalist."

Liza is just a performer when it comes to singing.

As an actress, Liza's actually not bad. I'd say B+ to A- when she stays sober and gives it her best.

  • Arrested Development makes more seance now! Ahaha

  • This is horrid, repulsive, and hideous.

Liza is no Ethel Merman. She's not even a Judy Garland (not that Judy was anything worth listening to).

I'll take Ethel Merman ANY DAY.

    Go de-louse yourself Liza. You're a mess.

  • Um...

You're forgetting that the reason Steve wrote the song "Everything's Coming Up Roses" as a low-comedy, easy-to-act song for Rose (while Herbie and Louise were the ones reacting in horror) because he knew Ethel was just a mediocre actress..

  • This Liza-worship is unfathomable to me.

While Judy had a nice voice and was pretty (but nothing special), Liza can't sing or act, and got smacked by every branch on the ugly tree.

Hmm. Can't act, can't sing, and has her mother's penchant for self destruction. Nice combo.

No one can seriously dispute that if Liza had NOT been born Judy Garland's daughter, we would never have heard of her.

She's unfit to do even community theatre, and her voice coach would have run away at first screech.

  • I never said I was "worshipping" Liza at all -- I like her for what she is, but I don't think she's anywhere near Peters or Buckley.

And it's not really fair to bash Liza's appearance (which isn't really that bad) considering Ethel was even less of a looker.

Who's your fav Rose besides Ethel?

  • ew...

    no.

    she's screaming.

    i don't like it.

i like bernadette peters and bette midler.

    can't decide between them.

  • Hmm definitely following in the footsteps of her mum, of course a super actress and beautiful lady herself.

Long time since I have seen and heard Lisa Minnelli sing

    Thank you for the post...

  • It's LiZa - with a Z - NOT LiSa with an S!

...caues Lisa with an 'S' goes sss not zzz...

  • It's hard to compare this to others. This is Liza's take on it -- It's not done in the context of the show. I feel like Liza would have been a wonderful Mama Rose, but the whole Liza persona would have gotten in the way of the character. That said, this woman is FIERCE and ELECTRIC. I would love to see her doing this in-character without all the Liza ad libs.

  • Yes, Atlast, she would have been wonderful and her Rose would really have been stamped with the Liza persona; especially since she is so "nice"-- it would have been a very different, but refreshing, take on the usually overbearing and commanding character. I think she would have delivered a more vulnerable, self effacing, & loving quality on the surface, but with every bit of the narcissism, angst and power,

  • And, of course, her mom, Judy Garland, was the first choice for the 1962 film that ended up starring Rosalind Russell. Now THAT would also have been something to see!

  • I see what you mean - She'd be more like Tyne or Bernadette than like Patti in the role.

When I first read that they wanted Garland as Mama Rose, I was like "What?! Dorothy? NO!" And then I considered it more -- She would have been a fantastic Rose: A selfish and driven woman with an extreme case of tunnel vision.

That said, I loved Rosalind's human and believable take on Rose.

  • AtLast, I enjoyed Rosalind's take on it; I love Bette, and I loved her in the film--just for the sheer over the top overacting spectacle of it all! Rosalind truly acted the role; you could feel sympathy, and understand what motivated her to become the stage mom she did.

  • Haa what does Liza say at 4:14? It sounds like "DAMNIT!"

  • Oh my god--I think your right!!! Hadn't noticed that!

  • I mean, it's not unlike Liza to be spastic, but wow. Just wow.

  • Two n's. M-I-N-N-E-L-L-I.
