Just FYI....this was a profile done on my cousin for 60 Minutes. Mike Wallace was a good friend of hers actually. The word "retarded" WAS the acceptable word back then and was how her son "Bucky" (Peter Jr. actually) was referred to. FYI....he is still alive in the institution he has lived in most of his life. Her daughter "Muffy" (Meredith) is living in the apartment she grew up in and just donated all of the art Beverly talks about in this clip for an auction that will be Oct 2009 in NYC.
Back then the word Retarded was used not like today, had that interview been done only a few years ago he would not have said that, being older I remember that. She also had a great laugh, great woman, Great voice. Thanks for this.
Thank you so much for posting this video. It is a comfort to see her and how she dealt with her problems when we all have to deal with her loss now. She was my inspiration as a coloratura soprano.
Beverly Sills is interesting from almost every point of view. I read somewhere that her IQ is 155. It is easy to believe it. My condolences for her husband's death last year. They were a successful couple in every respect, professional and emotional.
What a remarkable human being. She is extraordinary, she is not the typical opera singer. I always realized it. I believe in what she said about not being ambitious. Her greatness took her to the top, not her greed for power and spotlights.
RE: Le Coq d'Or--I don't think so. The only video I know looks like it was clipped from an early TV show. But ask your question at the site beverlysillsonline. These guys know everything.
Sept. 8, 2006 : Roy and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Beverly Sills' husband, Peter Greenough. Mrs. Beverly Sills Greenough and the entire family are in our hearts during this difficult time.
That was a good thing to put up. Thanks. I hope she feels like staying involved in the opera business. It sounds like she did a good job of keeping the private and public lives separate. He was her husband, not her Svengali, which is a compliment to him.
Larry and Roy , you are such special special people to have put this on youtube.Beverly will of course shake her fist at the skies and continue to say " I will not be defeated" What an incredibly brave lady she is!
I am devastated that Peter is no longer and I will treasure the letters that he so kindly wrote to me when Bev was singing elsewhere and unable to reply
I am sad about this piece of news. I am from Argentina and can tell you that there was hardly an interview in which she did NOT mention him. Their mutual love was huge.Miss Sills bought a jewel in order to be sure of the militaries not doing anything to her earnings. In the States Mr Greenough BOUGHT it to her, on Sills mother's advice. Weird and beautiful.
How could you not love this woman?

Thank you so much for putting up this clip and all of the others. I have loved Beverly for years and saw her many times.
How wonderful to hear and see her again.
Thank you so very much.
Is there a full video of Le Coq d'Or? I'd love one.
Thanks again so much.
