What Avon did was business, not desperation that the game. See a lot of people think the game is only about violence, that's part of it, and the rest is mental.what Avon did was brilliant
I don't think Avon seemed desparate in any way...he's getting money sent to his sister and probably himself...Avon knew that soon Marlo's run would come to an end(just as his did)...I mean why not have Marlo kill off all the Eastside people? At the end of Season 5, I wish they would have had a scene where Avon gets out reiging supreme to go along with the "nobody's talking about Marlo" scene
This is a great scene. If you remember, Avon only had to finish out his original sentence as he was sent up for a parole violation. He's helping to tilt the scales in favor of Marlo/West Side over Prop Joe/East. It's heavily echoed in this season that Marlo and his kind will fall eventually. He leaves too many bodies stacked. By helping pull the connect out of Joe's hands and into Marlo's, and knowing Marlo won't last, he's actually setting himself up to return to the throne when he comes home
@ProducerMikeFaber What random analysis is that? Everyone knows from day one that Avon's got no love for the East Side (example: east vs west basketball game episode). Avon hated the Co-op arrangement that Stringer got them into. He's not helping Marlo out in anticipation to Marlo's crew ending too. He just needs to sort out his family while inside. We don't even know if Avon knew the cops were onto Marlo's crew n the bodies in the vacants. Prop Joe and 'em didn't even know.
How can anyone ever think Marlo bested Avon. Marlo had to go thru him fo the connectons so it was up to Avon. Plus why not have Marlo kill off the competitoin while u locked up? Then u only have one person to deal with.
@kandinskyforfootball Cause he is simply messing with Marlo. Giving Marlo the connection so he will kill all those on Eastside cause he hates them that much.
@CuriousWhale Agreed, But I Think U Are Slightly As Well... iF U Look @ My Prior Comments/Arguments On This Vid, I've Spent A Large Part Of Them Explaining Marlo Clearly Becoming King Of Bmore (He Had West Side Once Avon Went iNside, n' Was Prolly Gonna Kill Avon Had He Not)... Avon Doesn't Come Off As Desperate iS All I'm Sayin', He Comes Off As He Always Was (A West Side N*gga) He Honestly Gains Nothin' From Beefin' Wit Marlo Or Holdin' The Connect Away From Him, iN The End? Avon H8s East Side
@20jandrews Why is it that Avon sets out to murder west side players, who are those he just said he has nothing but love for? If he loves them he should have not been beefing with Marlo over corners. Doesn't make sense!
I love the moment at 1:51 when they connected, it was like Michael Jordan talking to Kobe Bryant. It was like Avon was telling him "You the man now but, I'm the man you still want to be."
This reminds me of the truce Avon tried to call with Omar in Season 1; he just wanted to gain his trust and then kill him as it was easier than taking Marlo's muscle head on. He just uses Marlo to consolidate Baltimore for him ready when he comes out. If Sergei knew him in prison he could have given Stringer or Slim a connect to the Greeks; but he waited and played everyone else so he was a stronger king when his leaves prison.
Avon is the boss cause he doesnt kill just to kill. Money is not his goal but just to be a gangsta. Marlo doesnt care bout the money but just wants to be on top and be respected. Thats why he kills without mercy to prove points on different occasions and gets mad when Omar was callin him out. He was fuming when he heard Omar was calling him out by name in the streets and didnt know. Not taking anything away from Marlo he had smarts and a killer but was more concerned with power.
Ok ppl the truth is I believe is that Marlo is not scared to srr Avon but just realizes he has power. The 100 grand meant nothing to both cause Avon knows Marlo got it and just wants it. Second for all you saying he got over selling for 10 mil if Avon has power to run jail and give him the connects surely he could get it back when he gets out. Remeber he is known for his word and reputation which is a lot more than what marlo has. The whole reason he did was to get Joe he still hates Marlo.
@union410 Avon never had the connect himself, it was always Joe's, he is simply taking a commission here to facilitate things for Marlo, which is a very smart move.
@mustaba1234 True Avon never had the connect while he was on the streets, but he had it once he was locked up. Well, he still didn't have it but he still sold it in this scene. Should've sold it for way more.
@union410 I think Avon's connection was from New York, Stringer hooked him up with the Greek connect while he was in jail as the NY product was crap compared to the other one. You're right though he could have asked more for it since Marlo wouldnt have been able to do business with Greeks without proper introductions and references
I find it interesting that even though Marlo won the war, he lost in the long run. He's free, but without power and Avon is incarcerated, but still an authority figure
@iotaomikron NAw bro you need to go back in watch season 1 then.. Avon always been westside..Prop Joe always been Eastside, remember the basketball game??
The writers of the wire forgot that in the first season they showed Avon Barksdale was leading his gang in East Side in this video Avon Barksdale is saying he is from West Side I wonder if anyone noticed this?
Although not depicted in the Wire the east is always the rougher, grimyer, side of town. Drugs almost always flow west to east with the west being more business minded and the east being more of the consumer...
never understood avon's beef with the west side i mean fare enough he lost a few basketball games to them but that still does not explain his deep seated hatred for them, is it like this in real life? I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A TRUE BALTIMORIANS PERSPECTIVE ON THIS.... PLEASE RESPOND
@surevas88 In most major urban cities, its some type of territorial beef. For example in Detroit where I grew up, its always been the west side is the best and the east side is the least side. We hated the east side. The thought of driving over to the east side pissed us off. That's just the way it is bro.
@surevas88 the reason you dont understand is probly bc you dont understand the problem, hahaha example Avon doesnt have beef with westside like you said , he hates eastside. AVON IS THE KING OF THE WESTSIDE
He should have got a 100k for all his peps that got locked up We Bey, Shamrock, and the rest of the crew. Their family needs to eat too; especially greedy as Dalonda.
@unccrazy333 I said that cause in the end , Slim Charles (Avon's man w/ Prop Joe being dead) ends up with the connect and Marlo is reduced to living a life made for Stringer. His name doesn't ring out of the streets (unlike Omar and arguably Avon) and his confrontation with those two corner boys at the end show how far he done fell!
@mskux19 go way outta dat, he haggled 100g's out of marlo. dat was water off a ducks back to marlo considering how much he'd make from cutting out prop joe from d connect!! 100g's was nothing. Still though omar was a legend and ds scene was pretty sweet. "The game is the game... ALWAYS"
@mskux19 Barksdale Crew 4Life, But? There's No Discountin' The Fact That Marlo Waxed That Ass n' Became The King, How Does The Series End? Avon Doin' Life, n' Marlo Still iN The Streets (Tho' I'm Sure iT Was Soon 2 Be Over 4 Marlo After He Hit The Streets Again...) But The Writing iS On The Wall, Marlo Became King, Hands Down... #WestSide^!
@Z3NZILE All Marlo cared about was his name ringing out on the street. He didn't step up to Omar when he called Marlo a bitch and in his last scene the kids didn't know who he was. He had to walk away from the street because of the deal he did with the police. He became a nobody. Avon would be out in a few years - he only went back inside for parole violations.
@Ollygmail His Parole Violations Were 4 Multiple Gun Charges On A Violation Of Drug Charges, So He's Away 4 Life, Marlo Had 2 Leave The Streets Do 2 The Deal He Cut, But Returned Bcuz He Couldn't Live A Str8 Life, Thus The Scene Him Returnin' 2 The Streets n' The Kids Not Know Him (BTW U Think Those Youngin's Knew Who Avon Was? Cus They Didn't), As Far As Him Not Goin' @ Omar Himself? Look @ The Link On The Side Of The Video "Marlo n' Crew Hold Court iN Jail" That Explains That Whole Debacle...
@Z3NZILE You're right, Marlo will never be able to leave the street, that's all he is. But his name has gone, the kids were talking about Omar not him. Why did Chris keep it a secret what Omar was saying? Maybe he was scared of Marlo taking on Omar - I'm not sure what will happen to Marlo but Avon only had to finish his seven year conspiracy sentence, none of the weapons were his, his soldiers took the blame for those.
@Ollygmail Chris Didn't Tell Marlo Cus He Took The Omar Situation Personal n' Wanted 2 Take Omar Out Himself, n' Avon Did Get Knocked 4 The Weapons Charge, He Get's Shown The Statement From Stringer Sayin' He Has A Criminal Stash House, iT's The Bodies He Beat, Wee-Bay Took Those Charges... As Far As Marlo Name Bein' Gone, Same iS The Case Wit Avon's Name (#Fact), Not Taking Away From The Fact Marlo's Name iS Gone Or W/E, The Fact Just iS? Marlo Beat Avon n' Became King Of The Westside...
@Z3NZILE they knew that if marlo found out they would make them go after omar and they knew fuckin with omar is not good cause sombody would be killed and they knew marlo wouldnt step to omar himself
@buggeazy102 Chris Didn't Tell Marlo Cus He Wanted 2 Kill Omar Himself, Somthin' All The Top Gunners On The West Side Couldn't Accomplish... Marlo Wasn't Afraid Of Any1 n' Never Displayed Any Tendencies Showing Otherwise... His Reaction 2 FINALLY Finding Out Omar Called Him Out While iN Lock UP^? Clearly Proves That... iF U Don't Like Marlo? iT's Ok, I Didn't Either Until Watching The Series 4 A 3rd Time (n' STiLL Don't Really)... Was Marlo Heartless? Yes... A Coward?? No... #Period
@Ollygmail They didn't make that fully clear, but finishing his 7 year bid for conspiracy was the minimum. According to wikipedia, it is implied that he recieved a conspiracy to committ murder charge on top of his parole violation which puts him in jail for 25 to life.
@mskux19 Disagreed. Avon is a fucking dinosaur. He's struggling to find his tongue have the time, doesn't seem comfortable in his own skin, is there only the momentum of past glory, and then he tries some social chit-chat at the end to which Marlo says 'the game is the game'...basically dismissing Avon without so much as blinking. You see all of Marlo's strategies throughout the series, and see how he cuts-off, takes over and kills anyone he even depends on too much...
@fungalfart88 you are wrong. Avon was the absolut leader of this conversation... businessman-like "social chit-chat" part was perfect even from a G like him
@fungalfart88 I see Avon as the true boss of bmore and Marlo as a placeholder in this scene. I honestly don't see how anybody could think he is coming off as anything else. if it wasn't for Avon Marlo wouldn't have been able to buy from the greeks...in the scene in which Marlo meets Sergei he looks back at Avon to see if giving Marlo the connect is cool
@mskux19 continued...and Marlo doesn't get sucked into the lawyers' bullshit the way Stringer did...Marlo is fucking evolution in action. He's Avon 2.0. He's the next fucking model. Calling Marlo a pretender is fucking ignorant.
This is a great scene...It shows know matter what or how hard Marlo tried to get his name to ring out on the streets he still lost to both Avon and Omar...Avon, Omar, and Marlo all had beef with each other and with others but in the end the two main people in the story still rose to the top...Marlo and his people fell, Omar is still a legend and Avon is still king of da streetz...Now dat Joe and Cheese are dead Slim will be in charge waitin for Avon's return. Avon won after all.
@Louifie That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at is Avon wound up in prison serving the rest of his bid, Omar wound up dead, and Marlo wound up free and rich. Which one would you rather be?
That must have been a long ride home from Jessup for Marlo. Sitting in his ride thinking "I just got screwed without even being in the shower" He was Powerless in this scene.AVON FTW !
Being real is being yourself people. Avon was a gangster plain and simple. He was true to himself. A man who is a police officer and knows it and acts like it is being real too dumb ass
@deadlylyrx Thank U!!!!!! Well said!!! People always get being "real" so twisted. Just cuz ur hood don't always mean ur "real". I know people from all walks a life, some are real, most are not. Rich, middle class or poor. It don't matter.
Marlo could never be Avon. Cuz Marlo has no honor. He's a slimy killa so no one fucks with him like that. He killed Prop Joe after Joe bent over backwards showing him the business side of the game. Avon didn't like the east side but he never burnt the bridge. Another thing Avon and Stringer knew about Butchie and Omar's connection and never even thought to go touch Butchie. Marlo is a fag.
@numba1soulbrotha Yeah, Prop Joe showed him stuff but he probably had ulterior motives for doing so, like with mostly everything else - I don't think Prop Joe would've done that without thinking he could get something out of it in the end - I don't think i really see it as a favor
I did all kinds of dirt up in Baltimore and all along the east coast. I used to work for the CIA where my codename was 'Grape Soda'. Everyone knew my rep and feared my step. One time this big Oprah Winfrey lookin' pimp tried to bank me after I skeet'd on one of his rides. I just looked right in his eye and said "Look brother, ain't no thang but a chicken wing'. And he started crying. Because that's how I rolled. Hard and fast like a twix.
The fate of these two characters in intresting. Although Avon lost the war and is doing time, he seemed content, because in prison he was still the king. Marlo won the war, but ultimately lost what he craved most, power, although he remained free
If Avon was so smart in knowing what Marlo was after then why the fuck didnt he do it and get to the Greek when Prop Joe was supplying him and ace Joe to have the line for himself?!! I woulda enjoyed it a lot more if Avon ran the show in the end than Marlo.
dammit, im sick of youtubing videos. bring this show back. fuck make a season 6. Avon gets out, slim charles is running shit, add a new player ,some cops. damn. this show is to good to be over for good
@609ric Nah, Stringer was way out of pocket first. First Avon's nephew and then he gave up the address where Avon was held up with the guns they were about to use on Marlo. Stringer deserved what he got.
@1L4MK It's String's fault; he shoulda been straight with Avon from the beginning instead of trying to get Brother Mouzone killed. Besides, he snitched on his life long friend cuz he felt he was being pushed out the door and for that I felt it was fair that Avon gave him up.
A: Prop Joe would take over the city without Marlo controlling the west side, and
B: Nobody can get away with dropping as many bodies as Marlo without getting killed or arrested. Marlo's fall is inevitable.
So Avon kills two birds with one stone by giving Marlo the connect. And just look what happened. Prop Joe dead. Marlo retired, leaving Slim Charles basicaly in charge. When Avon gets out in 5 years, his throne will be waiting for him.
I highly doubt it that Avon would foresee Marlo's downfall. I think he aided Marlo only because he respected him, they were both westside and because he could extort money out of him. Besides Avon isn't getting out in 5 years. He got over twenty or something years for conspiring to murder
@ikosabre The foreknowledge of Marlo's fall may have been reaching too far, but I don't think it's beyond reason. At this point in the show, everyones been speculating about how Marlo took so much territory without dropping a sea of bodies, and the gangsters knew he was just good at hidding them. Sooner or later, the cops would bring hell onto his operation. And Avon wasn't charged with anything but violating parol, so he's serving the rest of his first sentance of 7 years with time served.
@ikosabre Interesting...I always thought Avon helped Marlo partly as payback for Stringer allowing Prop Joe & the rest of his "eastside bitches'' into the towers,& he saw Marlo as a means to settle that score(which Marlo did, when a)he shut down the co-op, & b)he took out the founder of the co-op,Prop Joe himself).Of course, the hunnerd large out of Marlo's pockets did'nt hurt either.....
@AnotherMasterMind I agree with you on everything except the last part. I don't see Slim Charles just handing Avon the keys to the throne after chipping in to buy the Greek connect off of Marlo. Look at it like this : would you chip in to buy a 10 million dollar house, just so your FORMER BOSS could move in?It don't work that way, homie.
@iscottm No, his people confessed to all the weapons charges, they couldn't prove a conspiracy, Avon was put away for violating parol. So he served the rest of his previous sentance of 7 years. He only did a year and a half, that leaves about 5 years.

i don think he fell . he was out . he wanted to have the feeling one last time .

#WestSide^!
Z3NZILE 1 month ago
@Z3NZILE All Marlo cared about was his name ringing out on the street. He didn't step up to Omar when he called Marlo a bitch and in his last scene the kids didn't know who he was. He had to walk away from the street because of the deal he did with the police. He became a nobody. Avon would be out in a few years - he only went back inside for parole violations.
Ollygmail 1 month ago
Z3NZILE 1 month ago
@Z3NZILE You're right, Marlo will never be able to leave the street, that's all he is. But his name has gone, the kids were talking about Omar not him. Why did Chris keep it a secret what Omar was saying? Maybe he was scared of Marlo taking on Omar - I'm not sure what will happen to Marlo but Avon only had to finish his seven year conspiracy sentence, none of the weapons were his, his soldiers took the blame for those.
Ollygmail 1 month ago

Yes... A Coward?? No... #Period
Z3NZILE 1 month ago
@Ollygmail They didn't make that fully clear, but finishing his 7 year bid for conspiracy was the minimum. According to wikipedia, it is implied that he recieved a conspiracy to committ murder charge on top of his parole violation which puts him in jail for 25 to life.
Antrizzle2009 1 month ago
@mskux19 What makes you say that? Marlo sold the connect for $10 million, Avon only got a $100 grand.
JaeRedMarketing 1 month ago
@mskux19 Disagreed. Avon is a fucking dinosaur. He's struggling to find his tongue have the time, doesn't seem comfortable in his own skin, is there only the momentum of past glory, and then he tries some social chit-chat at the end to which Marlo says 'the game is the game'...basically dismissing Avon without so much as blinking. You see all of Marlo's strategies throughout the series, and see how he cuts-off, takes over and kills anyone he even depends on too much...
fungalfart88 3 weeks ago
@fungalfart88 you are wrong. Avon was the absolut leader of this conversation... businessman-like "social chit-chat" part was perfect even from a G like him
gu3st8 3 weeks ago 2
@fungalfart88 I see Avon as the true boss of bmore and Marlo as a placeholder in this scene. I honestly don't see how anybody could think he is coming off as anything else. if it wasn't for Avon Marlo wouldn't have been able to buy from the greeks...in the scene in which Marlo meets Sergei he looks back at Avon to see if giving Marlo the connect is cool
coolestrod34 3 weeks ago
@coolestrod34 Exactly so why does everyone think Marlo was on top? Only becuase he was out but he couldnt do anything without Avon help.
swoldier3000 3 weeks ago

Louifie 4 months ago 4
@Louifie That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at is Avon wound up in prison serving the rest of his bid, Omar wound up dead, and Marlo wound up free and rich. Which one would you rather be?

Nice detail how Avon tested Marlo's insecurity by switching topic at the end..

Marlo is a fag.
numba1soulbrotha 5 months ago 3

Look at the difference between the meeting off marlo and stringer and avon and marlo,

avon set stringer up to be killed lolllll
1L4MK 7 months ago
@1L4MK It's String's fault; he shoulda been straight with Avon from the beginning instead of trying to get Brother Mouzone killed. Besides, he snitched on his life long friend cuz he felt he was being pushed out the door and for that I felt it was fair that Avon gave him up.

Avon was brilliant here. He knows...
AnotherMasterMind 8 months ago 80
@AnotherMasterMind tru dat! Fucking love Slim Charles, smart and loyal.
TheCamorraDGD 7 months ago
I highly doubt it that Avon would foresee Marlo's downfall. I think he aided Marlo only because he respected him, they were both westside and because he could extort money out of him. Besides Avon isn't getting out in 5 years. He got over twenty or something years for conspiring to murder
ikosabre 7 months ago
@ikosabre The foreknowledge of Marlo's fall may have been reaching too far, but I don't think it's beyond reason. At this point in the show, everyones been speculating about how Marlo took so much territory without dropping a sea of bodies, and the gangsters knew he was just good at hidding them. Sooner or later, the cops would bring hell onto his operation. And Avon wasn't charged with anything but violating parol, so he's serving the rest of his first sentance of 7 years with time served.
AnotherMasterMind 7 months ago
@ikosabre Interesting...I always thought Avon helped Marlo partly as payback for Stringer allowing Prop Joe & the rest of his "eastside bitches'' into the towers,& he saw Marlo as a means to settle that score(which Marlo did, when a)he shut down the co-op, & b)he took out the founder of the co-op,Prop Joe himself).Of course, the hunnerd large out of Marlo's pockets did'nt hurt either.....
tabbypappy 6 months ago
Yeah, that's true too
ikosabre 6 months ago
But it's implied that he would be charged with conspiracy to murder and wepons charges at the end of the third season, although it's never made clear
ikosabre 7 months ago
