The Hell belief in general should not be permitted to be discussed in public schools if it is used as a tactic to bully. This problem goes far beyond religion. I have said time and time again that there is an inherent cruelty in human beings when they collect in groups, and it MUST stop. This world is not an acceptable place to bring new people into. People should stop raising children until they commit to work on themselves. I'm probably more angry than you are about this. Hang in there :)

For the LGBT community, things are better than they ever have been - and it's still terrible in some places. In first world countries it'll be at least another 100 years before homophobia is too weak for these things to happen. For third world countries I'm thinking closer to 1000 years.
I'm very glad that you are angry about this. I'm 40 now and I can't believe that islam and other fundamental religions have such a hold on the western world in this day and age. However, these people are exercising their freedom of speech and it's good that we know just what they think. It encourages and perpetuates debate over what is right and wrong and that is very healthy. It is easy to assume that everyone thinks the same as you but they don't .
I'm ashamed that, even in my 'liberal' country of the Netherlands, religious freedom is often interpreted as the right to discriminate. And, like in Canada, there's nothing we can do about it. E.g. christian schools can legally refuse openly gay teachers and say that they have the right to do so because it is part of their "freedom of religion". Makes me sick.
@Rettequetette yup, ending public funding to catholic schoolboards is probably the first thing I would do as premier of ontario or whatever other province funds a separate religious schoolboard

I saw a movie about a similar situation a few years ago, i think it's based on a true event, the acting was superb, it choked me up. I can't remember the name of it now, .. it starred Sigourney Weaver. Damnnn, what was it called!!!???. It may have been a TV movie.

I'm sure Jamie is not the first gay teen to commit suicide in Canada because of bullying. I think it's just because of the media attention now that it's come out so strong.
I don't see this as being a very difficult thing to control, at least in schools. Bullying is controllable, but there has to be a no tolerance on it and acted on immediately. I don't think that bullying is worse when I was in school, but back then, parents had NO problems beating the snot out of a kid who bullied theirs.

Probably about 40% go into the police force because they were bullies when they grew up and want to keep being bullies, then another 40% go in because they got bullied and are pissed and want to get back at the world- they probably continue to get bullied by the other cops who are veteran bullies, then there's the 20% that actually go in because they want to serve and protect.
On a more serious note; thanks for bringing my attention to this situation. I was consoling myself in the wake of the U.S. case that "at least that doesn't happen here in Canada"... now those hopes have been crushed, and I am pissed.

I've seen this dealt with before at college quite effectively. The tutor was dealing with a racist evangelical who was citing passages from the bible about Jews killing Jesus to taunt a guy who'd recently started dating an Israeli girl.
The tutor asked him to lay out, in 30 words or less, a reasoned position to back up his hostility against all Jews. When he couldn't, he handed out extra homework to research and present cases for and against the proposition and then turned back to the lesson.
The outcome was interesting. He devoted ten minutes to the subject at the end of each lesson for a month weighing out the points made and walking through the logic step by step before setting more homework. After the second session he mentioned that the homework was optional and eventually the Racist and his two flunkies stopped arguing.
Not sure it would work EVERY time, but it was was a welcome break into rational thinking that I lapped up like a cat with cream.
