  • wow such a soothing beautiful pretty voice

  • coleen all the way!!!

  • No one can do it like Linda. This is still incredible though!

  • Liza Minnelli performance of "A New Life" is addictive & find myself coming back often for a fix...love that rich voice pouring out over what had to be an enraptured audience with such beauty filled with richness of emotion...Liza, you are magnificent!!!

  • I really like the way she expresses the emotion in this song and the emphasis in the right places.Wonderful interpretation Liza - thank you.Your version has helped me so much in learning this song. I love it!

  • OMG she sounds just like her mother

  • if this is not a liza song, then i never heard one! there is so much emotion and passion i truly love it. thanks for the post. love&peace

  • I am in love with liza!!! Ah! this is one of my favorite songs and shes singing it!! Happy day!

  • LiZa soars & gives a performance so magnificent & incredible that you never want it to end...too bad this was never recorded by Liza but this is wonderful to watch & experience over and over...Bravo LIza!!!

  • Masterpiece

  • Perfection! Help--I cant stop replaying it. Her voice just soars, the emotion in the eyes...she's magnetic!

  • She's absolutely stunning in this vid!

  • AMAZING

  • Even though Linda Eder is really great singing, Liza actually performs it much better that's what set her apart from Linda!! And you can hear Judy in her voice the vibrato and the way she falls off the notes!!!

  • @marion71355 Exactly! At times her facial expressions make her look so much like her mom. Beautiful.

  • that was awesome...

  • perfection!! love the way her eyes seems to dance as she sings. she's so damn captivating...she can truly handle a large orchestra

  • Liza Liza Liza what more can anyone say you are so wonderful.

  • Liza looks so beautiful and sounds amazing!

  • This was Liza's first of two performances on an awesome 1989 Special called 'The Magic of Music'. I must have watched this 90 times that summer. Wore the tape out! If anyone has this entire Special Featuring Liza's roof blowing rendition of 'New York New York, please post it. It's is A MUST SEE!!

  • Gosh, I hear her mom in her voice.

  • I have to say, I am a HUGEEEE fan of her mom, the everlasting Judy Garland, and I LUV Linda Eder! And though Linda preoformed it in a sense, better, then Liza, I usually don't LOVE liza's voice, but she really shined in this song, bravo!

  • when was this recorded? i didn't know the song was as old as this recording seems

  • subwayeat: whatever you do,...please don't let Liza know your feelings,...I'm certain one posessing your great theatrical and musical knowledge, not to mention your admirable erudition,... would render her completely devastated, especially after her tiny trifle of a show running at THE PALACE.

Oh, btw, at your age she had already appeared on network TV, and won the Tony. Looks like you may have a bit of 'catching up to do'.

    Best of luck.

  • A great song performed by a great singer.

Nothing more needs to be said.

  • simply amazing.

  • when did she do this? agreed BRAVO my Dear Liza Mae......

  • Don't you just feel so ALIVE when you hear Liza sing.... :D

  • this is such a great song for liza!! loved it.

  • Gotta love Liza! No matter what she sings :)

  • thank you phmike69! she is not performing this as lucy, she is performing it as liza would perform it, and i think she sounds great...when linda eder sang "don't rain on my parade" i didn't freak out cause she didn't sound like ms. streisand....but i accepted it, linda made it her own, bad or good. just leave liza's song choices alone...when you all can reach diva status after 40 years in the business then you can point fingers.

  • I totally agree! I don't understand why people are like "OMG SHE IS A BAD LUCY", when she obviously is NOT Lucy at all O_o. God forbid people cover the songs they enjoy in this day and age....

  • I doubt that Miss Minnelli is attemptimg to 'be' Lucy. As for performing a tune in a certain key which is comfortable to the performer, it's done all the time. "On The Street Where You Live' in MY FAIR LADY is in key of 'C' in score, yet, when a slightly lighter & higher voiced, tenor sang it in London, w/ original B'way cast key was changed to E-flat.

Liza Minnelli is singing this her own way, her arrangement, &c. She has to compete w/ no one.

  • I'm sorry for not making myself a little clearer. I didn't mean that Liza isn't good as Lucy. It's quite clear that she's not trying to be Lucy. I just mean that I don't like her voice type for this song. I also think the emotion was out of the context of the show, but that's not a crime. I maintain that she should not have sung a song if she can't sing it in it's original key. Raising a key is fine. But lowering the key of what is meant to be a strong belting ballad just doesn't seem right.

  • Going on your rather ridiculous premise re. keys,Dame Julie Andrews should have not have given us her more beautiful renderings of material such as a 1994 recording/arrangement of "The Sound of Music", superior to the original film's version, and much of her Lerner & Loewe stuff,or Garland's heart-stopping turn from her TV series of "Ol' Man River" mainly because these were not performed in the key in which they may have originally been penned. Most can't tell & don't care re. key signatures.

  • ps: WQ, that you prefer one voice over another seems a much more sound and valid opinion.

  • Linda Eder is better.

    As is Coleen Sexton.

    AND Kate Shindle.

    As Lucy, at least.

  • Let's see those you mention Sell Out The Palace. they have wonderful voices,...Minnelli has far more.

  • Im not saying Liza's terrible and of course none of those women will be as big. But I think they are better in this role. Yeah she's not in the role, but I prefer their versions of this song.

  • MissLeanxx, your opinion is certainly one you're entitled to.

My point is , after seeing / hearing Miss Minnelli a few nights ago @ The Palace, I only wonder how many of the 'better vocalists' mentioned have a snowballs chance in Hell of not only filling The Palace, keeping audiences on their feet after almost EVERY number, punctuated by unrestrained shouts of "Brava!","We LOVE you!", & accomplishing this in addition to maintaining one of the most illustrious careers around, at the age of 62.

  • I never said they were better vocalists! I just said I would never be able to see Liza in the role of Lucy, even though she was the first person to publically sing this song.

  • My apologiies, I may have read anothers' roster of 'better singers'. My ultimate point: Lucy, (the role, even along w/ the show), will be forgotten, Liza will not.

  • I absolutely adore Liza and I adore her singing this song. It really shows off theay magnificent range in her voice and her charachter is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

  • FABOULOUS! FABULOUS!

  • She's so NOT a Lucy...

  • Magnifica Liza..

  • Quintessential Liza! Looks great - sounds great! Hard to believe this song WASN"T written for her - it really does speak to her life...a pity the old Liza may be gone forever

  • old liza my be gone but new liza is just as amazing in my opinion, maybe the range is different but at 61 she is still pounding that stage and belting those songs and i say brava liza brava!

  • BEAUTIFULLY DONE! BRAVO!

  • Tremendous performance from Legendary Liza who is one of the all time greatest...Liza gets inside of this great song and takes the listener with her in such a brilliant way! Bravo Liza Minnelli!!!

  • I have seen Ms. Minnelli perform live at least 50 times); she CONNECTS with an audience member on every word; I have been that person she reacts to many times; watch how she smiles at someone and then her voice actually changes as though she is speaking directly to them; it's an amazing talent that few have/had; certainly, her mother had it; and she just just SINGS this song straight -- there is no one like her and I saw her as recently as February at Mohegan Sun and she is still incredible!

  • I love this song and I love Liza!! Thank U so much!! LOL Kirk

  • One of the greatest performances ever from the greatest entertainer ever. Wow. I was there that night, thank you so much for getting this, and posting it.

  • This is my favorite version of this song.

This is the performance which made me love Liza Minelli and Frank Wildhorn, and I haven't looked back since!!!

  • what year was this?

  • "The Songwriter's Hall of Fame 20th Anniversary" was broadcast on June 22, 1989 - the show took place on May 11, 1989 at Radio City Music Hall.

  • I used to have the whole show on tape. This is from the 20th Anniv of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and it was a phenomenal show. La LiZa closed the show with New York, New York. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • There will never be another as great! Thank you for sharing this video. Amazing and beautiful!

  • love her. love her. this was very low key throughout till the end then she came to LIFE!

  • La Minnelli at the height of her powers. I wonderous song - and song perfectly! Of course, this was before her obesity and brain damage shame - not to mention marriage to that terrible turd burglar Miss Guest! Still thankfully she is on the up again now - viva La Minnelli! A fabulous minge dears! xxxxxxxxxxxx
