I've been looking at these since they were released in Europe. Unfortunately the IQ we get will probably watered down in some way like amenities, engine options, etc.. I really hope they're keeping the tuner crowd in mind and it's not a complete turd like the naturally aspirated Mini turned out to be.

I bet Toyota doesn't have the balls to offer a diesel for North America. You could easily squeeze 85+ mpg out of a diesel this size. I really don't understand why car makers refuse to do it. Diesels have better fuel economy than a similar sized hybrid, perform better, are more reliable short- and long-term, are less expensive to build, easier and cheaper to maintain, and actually have a smaller "carbon footprint" (if you drink that particular flavor of kool-aid) than their hybrid counterparts.
@2f5shooter I hear that diesel engines have more engine noise than a regular, and the engine isn't as smooth. However, those are some minor faults, and I'd go for a diesel anyday.

When are manufacturers going to give up on these retarded short wheelbase cars? They don't drive well, they're not exceptionally good on gas, they don't accelerate, they don't offer much real-world protection (see Top Gear's crash testing of a Smart Car) and to top it all, they look ridiculous - as do the people driving them. The simple fact is - if people liked the concept, you'd see a lot more Smart Cars on the roads. These micro cars will be recognized as a passing joke in the near future.

Ah, my 1985 Civic DX hatchback 5-speed with it's tiny 1.5 liter 3-valve/cyl engine averaged 38mpg in summertime suburban driving. Winter driving fell to 34mpg. And I could carry a washing machine in it. Find something today that does that. Good luck!
well i have the high end smart, turboed, K&N ram air, black on black, 16 inch aftermarket rims and heated pleather seats with six disc cd changer and loads moor. i got the car and did the addons for $19,000 and its made to be a cheap car, $12,000 for a base model! can you find another new car for that cheap? plus ill never see sub freezing conditions so ill never have that problem. i got the pimpest smart in east tennessee ;)

@divet3sniper I've heard otherwise that the europeans have been enjoying them over there. of course it isn't perfect but all of the reviews said it's more what the smart should have been.
I looked at one last weekend out of curiosity. I really don't like it. For such a small car it's actually pretty heavy, only 200lbs lighter than my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3. The gas mileage is also nothing to be proud of for such a small car.
This car also has no glove box and no trunk. There is a small slit in the back where you can store a few small things, that's it.
@AgileMJOLNIR yes you will not be buying the car for practical storage space or highway gas mileage. clearly this is a city car so city economy is all that matters, along with dimensions and turning radius.
@exiledrabbit If that's true then it sure seems like a small market. Whose gonna buy it in the states then? People that live in San Francisco or New York? Again, the gas mileage should also be much much better for a car this size, especially if it's a city car since city driving usually nets you worst mileage due to all the stopping and starting.
I just can't see this car becoming popular here anytime soon as the sales of Prius's and Nissan Leaf's are booming.

what I'd like to see is diesels be used, and the Lupo come here. The Lupo Diesel Can Achieve 70+ MPG (claimed AND confirmed). Top Gear also did a test on the Jaguar XJ V6 Twin Turbo Diesel. It got 750 miles on range, with part time aggressive driving (air conditioning, Radio, 85 MPH on the Highways) and part time eco driving.

When I see cars like this where the solution is to make them smaller, well I see more of a marketing ploy to sell less car for more money. The one I looked at over at the Scion dealership was 16,500 and that was with the bare essentials. Looking closer to 20k with the upgraded stereo etc. Yet it still get's the same mileage as a far more practical and better looking TC, or a Hyundai, or a Civic etc etc.
@AgileMJOLNIR I agree the market is small in the states, but if all people who lived in cities began adopting these types of cars the congestion would decrease dramatically, along with the likelihood pedestrian injury. @regalgsme I've never driven an iq but i've driven several smarts and honestly the quality is the worst I have ever seen in a car that wasn't over 20 years old. I drove it in the winter in barely sub freezing conditions and the door lock froze in the unlocked position, so we couldn't lock the car for the night. If they step up the quality and give it a transmission that isn't painfully slow it could live up to it's potential, but right now still too many flaws.

@shutupho07 its a good design but for 25k dollars it is very underpowered. Why pay 25k dollars for 200 horsepower and so far no way of adding a turbo cuz there is no room for it. when you can get a WRX for the same price with AWD and you get 250 horsepower. Or you can get a scion tc with 180 horses for 20K dollars and add a turbo.

You would be better off buying an '80s Rabbit diesel. Cheaper, more reliable, vastly better fuel economy and will last longer.
My lifted Blazer with a 6.2 V8 spinning 35" tires still gets better fuel economy than a midsize Toyota pickup. Oh, and I don't have overdrive.

I looked at one last weekend out of curiosity. I really don't like it. For such a small car it's actually pretty heavy, only 200lbs lighter than my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3. The gas mileage is also nothing to be proud of for such a small car.
This car also has no glove box and no trunk. There is a small slit in the back where you can store a few small things, that's it.

@exiledrabbit If that's true then it sure seems like a small market. Whose gonna buy it in the states then? People that live in San Francisco or New York? Again, the gas mileage should also be much much better for a car this size, especially if it's a city car since city driving usually nets you worst mileage due to all the stopping and starting.
I just can't see this car becoming popular here anytime soon as the sales of Prius's and Nissan Leaf's are booming.

what I'd like to see is diesels be used, and the Lupo come here. The Lupo Diesel Can Achieve 70+ MPG (claimed AND confirmed). Top Gear also did a test on the Jaguar XJ V6 Twin Turbo Diesel. It got 750 miles on range, with part time aggressive driving (air conditioning, Radio, 85 MPH on the Highways) and part time eco driving.

When I see cars like this where the solution is to make them smaller, well I see more of a marketing ploy to sell less car for more money. The one I looked at over at the Scion dealership was 16,500 and that was with the bare essentials. Looking closer to 20k with the upgraded stereo etc. Yet it still get's the same mileage as a far more practical and better looking TC, or a Hyundai, or a Civic etc etc.

@AgileMJOLNIR I agree the market is small in the states, but if all people who lived in cities began adopting these types of cars the congestion would decrease dramatically, along with the likelihood pedestrian injury. Of course I would not buy one, but I'm just saying there is something to appreciate about cars like the iq and the smart that since they are so geared towards urban progress. Even if they are shitty little cars.

@regalgsme I've never driven an iq but i've driven several smarts and honestly the quality is the worst I have ever seen in a car that wasn't over 20 years old. I drove it in the winter in barely sub freezing conditions and the door lock froze in the unlocked position, so we couldn't lock the car for the night. If they step up the quality and give it a transmission that isn't painfully slow it could live up to it's potential, but right now still too many flaws.

@shutupho07 its a good design but for 25k dollars it is very underpowered. Why pay 25k dollars for 200 horsepower and so far no way of adding a turbo cuz there is no room for it. when you can get a WRX for the same price with AWD and you get 250 horsepower. Or you can get a scion tc with 180 horses for 20K dollars and add a turbo.
