I have 3 children that need braces bit I can only afford to pay for one child. What should I do?

@Meep12252011 Take all your children for a consultation. The best age for an initial evaluation is between 7-8yrs. Then speak with the orthodontist about what treatment is required, when the best time to treat each child would be, haw they can arrange payment options. You may be surpised at what you can get done. Most orthodontists will offer a FREE initial evaluation.

Dr. B, how long does it take to put braces on? I am getting some in a couple of weeks and I am kind of nervous. Will your mouth be sore afterwards?

@MsAriana21 Putting the braces on unually takes 30min. we make the appointment longer to get your teeth prepared before and to go over instructions after. Right after your mouth is not sore. A few hours later as your teeth start to move things become sore and this lasts for a few days.

@coolerz4 There are many different reasons for getting orthodontic treatment. While your teeth may not look that bad you may have a problem with how they fit together or your bite. If you are not sure why your orthodontist recommened treatment for you, you should have them explain again what your treatment will do and why you need need it. I have seen some patients that have straight teeth by need braces and Jaw surgery to correct bite problems

@w1nns0nxD When we put someones braces on we schedule 1hr 30min. Placing the braces takes about 45min (25 min prep time, 20min putting on the braces).

@frankiejcontreras It does not hurt when the braces are put on your teeth. Your teeth become sore several hours later as your teeth feel the pressure from the wires moving your teeth. This will last for 2-5 days.

I'm getting braces in a couple of weeks and i play Lacrosse and you need a mouth guard for that. Do i need to get a special one from the orthodontist?

@breebriddd122 Great Question, alot of My patients play Hockey & Football. So No you do not need a special mouth guard. The best choice is a store bought that is slightly oversized that will fit over your braces. Because the alignment of your teeth is constantly changing with braces keep it inexpensive so if you need a different guard as your teeth change it will not cost you a lot of money.

@facesortho I'm just wondering, at my dental place, they usually give you the choice of watching TV while they check on your teeth. That usually makes me forget whats going on so it calms me down a bit. I really don't like dentist appointments. I'm just wondering if i would have that choice when i get my braces on, or like be able to listen to music or anything.

@StarSnow10 You can always bring your own tunes and listen to them. My patients do that all the time. Some offices have TV other do not.

@niss519 You do not need to see a dentist first. You can go directly to an orthodontist no referal is needed. Most orthodontists offer a free consultation in which they will evaluate your teeth and bite and let you know what is going on and if you would benifit from treatment.

It's not recommended, because the excessive chewing can increase the risk of breaking your braces. If your braces break off your teeth that will slow down your progress and you will have extra appointments to fix the broken braces and add time to how long it will take to complete your treatment.

Hey doc I have my braces for 3 months and now I have swollen gums around my molar bands (the upper two m. bands) they totally hurts that i cannot eat that much. the first time they were put it didn't hurt that much. but now they are swollen and painful. is that normal?what should i do?

Pain & swelling are not normal. It is most likely caused by not enough cleaning or poor oral hygiene especially if it is all the bands. (If it only one band some food or debris may be stuck between your gums and the band) You need to spend extra time when you have braces brushing & flossing.

If you work hard at that the swelling should go down and so will the pain.

If you are in real discomfort set up and appointment to see your orthodontist so they can check you out.

This type of question is almost impossible to answer without seeing your teeth. This is why most orthodontists off a free consultation. At this appointment the orthodontist will look at your teeth review different treatment options and treatment time and give you an estimate of the cost.

@melrose1996 The assistant is placing a tooth conditioning gel called "etch" on the teeth. This will allow the glue "bonding agents" to stick to the teeth so the braces stay on.

The blue gel is a mild acid that conditions the the teeth so the braces will stick. Things that are acidic taste sour.

You have alot of questions: Make sure you see an orthodontist to get an evaluation. They can determine if you need teeth taken out and give you different treatment options. If yo have teeth removed it is not to bad you will be numberd up and if you see an oral surgeon you can even be sedated and will not remember the procedure. Finally it does not hurt when the braces go on.

That is a definite NO. If someone suggests that, run and fast. All well trained ORTHODONTISTS (have 2-3 more years of training than dentists) will need to do a full evaluation of your teeth, smile and face with x-rays, photos, impressions(molds), and an exam. Then they will review different treatment options with you and help you make an informed choice before and braces go on your teeth.

If it seems to good to be true it probably is.

The patient is wearing sun glasses to protect her eyes. The red thing is there to keep her mouth and teeth dry so the braces stick better and it is also easier to see so the braces are placed in the right spot on each tooth.

Invisalign, are no better than traditional braces. They are a different method of treatment that have their own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of what way to treat a persons teeth should be made between the orthodontist and patient affer knowing all the options.

Your teeth will definately get sore a few hours after the wire is put in your braces. This is just your body telling you that your teeth are getting straighter. How much it hurts is different for everyone, and can also depend on the type of braces and size of wire used.

There are NO SHOTS INVOLVED when we put on braces. The wires are placed in last. With the braces I use in my office "SPEED" braces, we do not tighten the wires. The wires are memory wires and when they bend to go into the braces, they want to straighten out. This is what moves the teeth.

For most people their teeth get sore a couple hours after their braces are put on. This lasts for 2-4 days so its best to eat soft foods. After that you should be pretty good. You can take an over the counter pain med for the soreness. Depending on the type of braces some of my patients have almost no soreness.

"Over all" they don't hurt that bad, or no one would go through it. Just remember everyone is different, so for some people there is no soreness at all, and others need to take some advil or tylenol for the discomfort.
