Jennings knew his way around a song, making it his very own. With so much manufactured and soulless country music out there these days, what a treat it is to hear this 60's track by a timeless artist.
what a gr8 song i am a new waylon fan and i have heard all the main songs like amanda and things but i love finding songs like this thanks for posting it was cool
No problem. I really got a lot out of reading your comment the first time and just now. I'm just a 21 (about to be 22 in December) year old kid that loves old music, and even though I try to make sure I understand them, it sure is nice to see someone who was there talk about them.
Beside Chaingangs, wandering musicians, train drivers, stage drivers & truck drivers each have a common understanding of this song. Whether they be on the road or not.
As a retired trucker, I thought I'd get it out of my system but it's still there. Like a war vet who remembers in flashbacks, the road is still there. It's a prison that doesn't let go. Sometimes it's heaven, sometimes it's hell, sometimes you don't even know.
One of many he did that never got any attention, except for us Waylonites. I played for 25 years, now retired from music at 56. I did this song and no one heard it before, but was requested many times after that. Championed as an "outlaw" but man could he sing.
Like Robbie Robertson said in The Last Waltz, "the road is a Goddamn impossible way to live". Yet some of us cannot escape it, we may not like it sometimes, but we still cannot put down roots. Call it wanderlust or doom, or our nature, but there are those of us who are/must be always on the move.
This song reminds me of my years on the road as a truck driver. It almost sounds like a threefold tribute to us, the homeless and the prisoner. People who are simply down on their luck and cast aside by society. Some day there will be a lot of cast-aways in US. A lot.
It was on Love of the Common People. Probably my second favorite of his after Wild Ones. Wish I'd gotten into him earlier, it was summer of '03 when I did, obviously a year and a half after his death.
It's always a pleasure to listen to a good song by a legend!

What a pretty song! Never heard it before. Where's it from? A movie? Sounds like real early Waylon.
