For all the people that think this is the limits of his creative ability you're wrong because this is a video about death metal drumming so therefore this solo is based around death metal drumming.
@DiqqiTM I think, not totally sure, but a while ago i think i remember hearing something about how like his right leg is playing on the right of a double bass, and his left goes between the left side of that double bass and the single pedal of a 2nd bass drum, so that's probably why it looks like that
it's the greatest feeling in the world when you've mastered all your four limbs so you can blast like this for hours. people who haven't experienced it can't understand the rewarding feeling. i've played jazz, i've played rock, i've played latin, i've played any genre you can think of. the one that never leaves me is metal.
When derek plays fast metal stuff with triggers like he does here he plays with his ankles there are plenty of videos that clearly show that(check the MD drummer fest thingy or hate eternal live vids.) and ofcourse when you play like this with you're ankles you're must be as flat as possible on the footboard.
No problem dude yeah this is an older video but he still uses ankle motion when playing fast with triggers but when he plays faster stuff without triggers he uses the flatfoot technique to get enough power but he can't go as fast as with the ankle motion.
Hes really good no matter what style you play thats skill so just please dont bash him there is 6 billion people on earth and everyone has a different way to veiw the world so what you like someone could hate
He plays for that super satanic death metal band called Slipknot. His demonic rhythm will land him a front row seat in Hell. He could have used his Thumping skills for something more appropriate like the Bible.
dude why do you say something that is not even true?! the drummer of slipknot is joey jordison(nathan jonas jordison) and this guy derek roddy plays for hate eternal.yeah and on more thing: slipknot is NOT death metal! it's slipknot-metal. anyway derek is much better than joey.
(FatherTicklefingers) Way to be a retard dude. You sounded so smart with that comment. Have fun "thumping" bibles while Derek does what he loves to do. Idiot.
I agree that this dude can play! I would love to have his speed. But it could be a bit more creative and change up a little. The same fill gets old after a while.
@babbling4brook <<<<<<<<<<< once again description says HOW TO PRACTICE SPEED AND ENDURANCE not how to write better tom fills, i can see someone like you had to still show heart in saying hes a good drummer though casting a flaw about him, when the flaw was only yourself.
@alexaxxem lol true man, i like how it got 10 thumbs up to XD and same with this joey bullshit, joey is a great musician in what he does, he may not be better technically tho.
@babbling4brook you know, i was thinking just the same thing. But then i looked at some other solos and he really is very creative, in other words a drummer amongst the best.
@babbling4brook Actually, he's a very versatile player. This is just him in death metal mode. Look up some vids of him at NAMM, he gets groovy with his stuff. :)
i gurantee tanner wouldnt even come close to this if he played everyday for a year. yea its fast and repetive but its a style dont watch it if you dont like it douche bag and he can do jazz too dont comment about ppl when you dont know who they are hypocrite
I'd rather the old style feel of drumming, snare drum ruderments..just good solid drumming... this shit has no groove and feel..much too repetitive also..it's all feet and single stroke..takes practice with speed but really not that hard
dont even compare the old style of drumming to this..this is robotic bulshit..no disrespect to this dude he's obviouly good at what he does..but it's the same shit over and over and over again..fast SINGLE STROKES why it's not?? Weckl, Bozzio, Gad, Paice, Bonham..you call that crap?? you fool!!and that music sucks as well...my opinion OK..but I'm right...LOL
never said it was easy.. it just takes practice but not too hard to figure out at all.. just a lot of speed and stanima...I have been a drummer for over 30 years.. I know a lot of 16 yr olds pulling off this stuff.. again no disrespect for this dude..he is good at what he does..I just dont like it
Then you don't need to tell us that you don't like it. We don't care if you do or not. But when you come here and then tell us it's nothing but robotic bullshit, you are going to raise some neck hairs. You don't have to like it, but you don't have to call it robotic bullshit, especially to everyone here who does like it.
death metal has alot to do with time and coordination, look at bands like necrophagist, they're one of the most technical groups in music, and they're fast

but he isn't its just a normal movement that happens when you play at those fast tempos using the ankle motion like roddy and kollias.
