This would be great for the Melbourne Ice, the faucilities would be fantastic. The seating would be great, and the atmosphere electric. I think the Ice could become very popular with this ice rink up and running :)
As of 30/10/08, the government announced that the rink is going ahead. Will start construction in 2009 and is due for completion 2010. In the meantime, from January or February next year, there will be a temporary rink at Docklands until the permanent one opens.
that temporary rink they have in docklands is frequently full to capacity and they turn people back constantly. the ice rink would make its money. the other thing is, that wheel.. what a stupid place for a wheel.. let's all look out at footscray tourists, have a look at the nice industrial side of melbourne.. being an aussie who works in canada every summer.. we all go to the hockey over there and love it. its a great sport.
I hate dockland's apartments, nothing like China's...
cheap materials, poor spacing, terrible concepts, lousy planning, no gardens...hate the glass concepts, the wood materials and spacing...kitchen in the living room, outdated toliets, nothing modern...apart from its better architectures, there is nothing much to compliment.
Hate docklands...who would wana spend that sort of money??? hOW CAN DOCKLANDS BE CONSIDERED ELEGANT???
It's odd that ING are willing to spend $100 mil for that monstrosity of an observation wheel, but wont spend half that for a multi-purpose world class ice facility.
kwillyau, any updates on this? doesn't look good for victoria, there are rumors of new rinks here and there but thats all they seem to be, we really need a new rink fast
Okay the latest I have heard is that apparently an announcement will be made in either May or June - just like there was going to be an announcement at the end of March and August last year. The $10 million was allocated nearly 4 years. The government's justification for it taking so long is that it is a private/public partnership. Load of crap if you ask me. Why don't they just get on with it.
Just another update. The deadline now for this project is March. Hopefully a decision will be made once and for all as to whether it is going ahead. From talking to people it doesn't look very likely.
all I can say is it would be such a good idea. could get nhl teams to play trial matches. so aussie can see a real sport. I am Australian so I can say that lol Thank god moving to Canada this year. I can't see it happening a wheel at docklands is a much better idea lol NOT!!!!
They have not gained their finance for the project. It is also not part of the Docklands building schedule for the next two years and after that point even if it was to commence building it would take another two years. So 4 years is the best we can hope for.
Ice sports are dying in Australia. The Federal Government should do something about this. It is a NATIONAL DISGRACE.
Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Speed Skating, Curling, Synchro Skating. Aaustralia should hold it head in shame. These are OLYMPIC standard sports. All we ever hear about is football, cricket, swimming etc.
Wish they'd build a rink. Victoria dominates nationally and all they have is this shithole. If it were in Canada the rink would be shut down for safety. :P
i love the ice house now that its open! sooo glad the decided to build it.. its fucking awesome!!!
and i remember ian webster haha
