@fstofurry I agree completely. I think tattoo is a little more poppy but halen rocks that solo and in general most bands sound the same in their work. And for being almost 60, roth can still hit a wide variety of notes
Great video, thank you very much for sharing. As much as I want to like "Tattoo" more, I have to say that I prefer this version of the song. Everything from Ed's improvisational guitar theatrics to Dave's lyrics (and Michael Anthony's vocals....of course....an integral part of the VH sound). I wish they would have listened to this before they rewrote. I'm still glad to hear music back in the hands of musicians!!! Finally!!!! You can only hear Nickleback regurgitated so many times.
everyone says "it sounds familar" or " they've done that before, Well Jesus Christ , I Know all the bands I like as soon as I hear the first RIF. So whats the difference, they have their own sound PERIOD !!!!! if you dont like it dont listen to it and dont go to their concerts, then it will make it easier for people that enjoy them to get a seat. good job on molding the vid, i agree would rather see vid than just pics
Tattoo blows (The Who wrote a song about it in 1967 and was TEN TIMES BETTER), Down in Flames destroys Tattoo. The other new tune done at Cafe Wha blows as well. They should have not fired Michael Anthony and, in retrospect, should have been reunited with Ted Templeman and not used John Shanks (the same fag who produces shit for Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Branch and Ashlee Simpson and played guitar for Melissa (Militia) Etheridge) as it sounds like shit but nevermind.
I'm so glad the band is together and recorded a new album. I am such a big VH fan that I'll enjoy almost anything they do. These songs are different, but why do they have to be instant classic songs?? I mean let's give them a chance to work and record some more before we judge them so harshly. I like these songs much better than the Aerosmith pop crap they've recorded the past decade. Can't wait to see VH live in Cali.
If it was Down In Flames that was a remake of Tattoo then you guys would be like "Tattoo is better than this Down In Flames garbage" its the fact that its new is why everybody hates it... gotta love people who love to hate things for no reason.
THIS SONG IS NOTHING LIKE TATTOO EXCEPT FOR THE INTRO USED IN YOU'RE NO GOOD WHICH IS THE OUTRO IN TATTOO. THIS SONG IS BETTER, BUT I LIKE TATTOO ALSO.
Yes people, the video doesn't match the song, but it IS better to watch than just a bunch of pictures! AWESOME tune....thanks for posting this 5150EVH5150
this sounds familiar. but this was first. listen to their brand new single tattoo. not saying either is bad. van halen rules. cannot wait for the next album
Okay first of all I believe that Van Halen is the greatest rock band of all time. But VISUALLY does Dave remind anybody else of a glam-rock version of Robert Plant in this video?
Better than "Tattoo"....should have kept it this way....I don't care if they already released "Your No Good"....This is the way it was written originally....great song....
p.s. Sorry i didn't watch the entire video. The promo video "You Really Got Me" is also used here. "Eruption" and "Jamie's Cryin' " video's where also shot at the same location around this time!
p.s.s. Van Halen's upcoming album "A Different Kind Of Truth" will feature old songs that were never released during the band's club years. "Tattoo" uses music from "Down In Flames". "She's The Woman" and "Bullethead" are two other songs from that time period
The story behind the song: "Down In Flames" was written during VH's club days (1974-1977). Some of the music was used later for "You're No Good" from the 1979 album Van Halen II ("You're No Good" is acually a cover made famous by Linda Ronstadt. Eddie added new music to it and according to him that was producer Ted Templeman's idea!).
p.s. The video above is the promo video for "Running With The Devil" shot at Gazzari's club in L.A. in late 1977 where VH use to play in the 70's!
you must be a fucking genius, because theres no way anyone else caught that. why the fuck are you here on youtube spreading the word of your enormous intellect when you could be the most widely respected man on the face of the earth for being so god damned smart? its a wonder, my mind had been blown. im honored, really.

@5150EVH5150 Thanks for sharing this, great version of what must be one of the greatest unreleased songs ever. Doing so you reduce yourself, keep sharing great songs instead. Have a nice day!
Hey, Nextar 100, did you realize that Mike Anthony´s mouth is ALSO movin and he´s not singing either!! Man, "This is a fake or something" for sure!! I think North Korea´s Kim Yong-il must be behind this...
@Nexstar100 His mouth is moving while hes not singing because this video is the video for Runnin with the devil and you really got me, the recording is at a live bar or club or something, the video is them playing different songs at a different time, it just is a cool video to watch while listening to the song bro
@greenwoodcowboy "They", which is collectively me, put video to the song to give your eyes to do along with your ears. No, you are not special in realizing this, and if it bothers you so, then stop watching :)
@greenwoodcowboy There is no video footage of them playing this song, only sound because it is at a club or bar or somethin...if there is video footage of it, odds are it's long lost by now...So whoever posted this video probably just thought, hey why not throw in the video from VH1 album so we can all have somethin' to look at while listening
@cciemail No need to call the guy a 'cunt', and according to a guy's comment on 'You're No Good', 'the music here is a slightly modified version of a Van Halen original called "Down In Flames". They were planning on including that one on Van Halen II, and for unknown reasons, changed their minds and went with this cover, but kept most of the musical elements anyway'.
Most of these unreleased VH tunes are from bootlegs that were never officially Released by the band. There is quite a few bootlegs available on EBAY. I have this on CD which is titled Sonic Tokyo. It was recorded in Tokyo 8-22-78
The BESTt unreleased VH song! A real shame they sacrificed this to You're No Good cover just to get a guarenteed charter like You Really Got Me. VH was always too good to waste music on damn covers! No covers on the new album, damn it!
And grow your hair long again, Dave! It looked cool in 2003 or whenever that Sammy and Dave tour was. Short hair ruins your stage presence.
rags847, ya, I agree. But I think a most them can never really be released on a "serious" level since alot of them morphed into Vh classics. You know, a riff here, a solo there and the rest were outright stolen by 80's hair metal bands.....But for the true fans sake, it would be nice to have a collection of these unreleased gems. I've got a few but there are tons more I'm sure. Maybe, Eddie is remixing them for release right now!!
Definitely. Which one's were coped by other bands? There's about 30 or so. If remixed, remastered and released today the disc would see multi-million, easy.
Down In Flames, Voodoo Queen, Young and Wild, Honolulu Baby, She's The Woman, Buckethead, Let's Get Rockin', etc, etc.
Well, when I say, copied by other bands, I sort of meant Eddies style and tone. Speaking of which, I heard Chickenfoot's single on the sat yesterday, and Satriani's sure tapped into Eddie's classic "brown sound"
Yea man. I'm all for Satch's lawsuit against Coldplay, but he really bites off of and channels EVH's style on the new Chickenfoot song "Oh Yeah". From the plucking beginning riff, to the big, stopping chorus riff, to the single-string plucked breakdown part, to the snaking solo. Man, the whole vibe, feel and dynamics of the piece. If you played it for someone and said this is a Van Hagar b-side they never heard of, you'd fool most people. It is all good, though. I like the song a lot.
First Sammy song I really like cause he approaches it like Diamond Dave would!. He relaxes. Doesn't try too hard and nerdy it up, like Hagar ALWAYS did in Van Hagar. First time he sounds cool. Lyrics and delivery. No over-earnestness and over-straining. He relaxes, feels it, lets some space in. Someone - Satch, Chad, a producer - finally got through to him. Ha! Btw Satch sounding like Eddie & Sammy sounding like Dave, "Oh Yeah" is the closest thing to classic VH till the new Woolfie record!
Ya I agree. Its not a bad song. It's interesting and goes all over the place. I hear a little bit of Whitesnake and Beatles influence in the song,. BTW do you play?
This one is out there. Very cool. The middle part kind of reminds me of of Dazed and Confused. I really like what they did with You're No Good with this tune. Thanks for the post.
Do you mean that everyone copied VH in the wrong way? If so, I agree somewhat. There were some terrific bands that were heavily influenced by them, though. How could you not be influenced by Eddie and co. at the time? LOL!
BTW...before I read that your comment, I was thinking how much Dave took a page out of Robert Plant's book in this video. Speaking of 'Page'...check out Ed at 1:22. LOL!
BTW...I don't mean to start a Zeppelin vs. Van Halen debate...both bands are great!
Just a sense that glam metal had the right idea of copying most of the hookiness that Van Halen and Led Zeppelin did, but like Led Zeppelin, Van Halen focused on direction. That's all.
I mean, I love glam metal, like Ratt, GNR, guys like that. I think that personally, a rare few of those bands broke from a formula. GNR did that. Led Zeppelin was very focused on direction.
@brownsound1 Your right about that. Van Halen played their own brand of hard rock music, and all those bands copied and ripped them off and thats what became hair metal.
well if it is true that van halen is working on a new album maybe they will dig up some of the old songs they never put on an album like this one. the tour went well with dave back hope they do an album, i know a dvd is in the works from the 07/08 tour dave said that himself at a new york show
I would really like to hear a CD (or album for us geezers) of covers. I LOVE this song, and wish I could have seen them in clubs early on, but they first did a shitload of covers. You're no good, obviously, comes to mind since the intro was lifted from this. There were bunches on their early LPs. Thanks for posting this Gem.
ROTH-ON! This is the VERY BEST song that they never officially released and needs to be recorded for their next CD w/Dave. Seriously this is an amazing song and one that would rock in concert! No more hagar the horrible and his constipated sounding voice. Wooohooooooo! Get this song on a CD boys!
Are you a black person who loves listening to rock or metal music? If you are, please send me a message in my mail box. I will like to talk to you. Please send me a message and leave your e-mail address. Also feel free to watch my videos.
Actually It's You Really Got Me and Running With the Devil because the video has tapping and running with the devil doesn't have tapping and You Really Got Me does.
INCREDIBLE. Just listen how effortless his playing is. And the progressions....This is why I don't play guitar. Awesome song, too bad it didn't see the light of day. I wish they would put all of the unreleased on a CD and issue it. I'd be first in line to buy one. C'mon Eddie, when you get out, do it. Thanks 5150evh5150 for posting this gem. I can't hear it enough.
I have (had it but lost it) that bootleg, but they didn't play this song during that concert. The person who made the bootleg added two early songs to the end and it almost fooled me at first.
@5150EVH5150 Well Eddie played mostly in A flat all the time. He would play E flat to A flat and to Dflat... which are semi-related to blues scales. He would sometimes solo in B flat for a "key change". Billy Gibbons used to pick on him and say, "Have you found the 5 (chord) yet?", referring to the fact he rarely played the "5" like you do in blues tunes.
Eddie really played simply, but the played the shit out of the few chords he used. He did get more complex with Hagar though.

you are so right. I dont for instance like bon jovi our cindirella, but van halen has a sound off progresssive funky blues.
eddierovbombar 2 years ago 2
@brownsound1 Your right about that. Van Halen played their own brand of hard rock music, and all those bands copied and ripped them off and thats what became hair metal.
theShowStopper321 7 months ago
well if it is true that van halen is working on a new album maybe they will dig up some of the old songs they never put on an album like this one. the tour went well with dave back hope they do an album, i know a dvd is in the works from the 07/08 tour dave said that himself at a new york show

Awesome song...this would have been a VH Classic if it had been released instead of being reworked to fit You're No Good.

Yeah I hear it. I also hear Black Sabbath in here. Zep & Sabbath influenced VH.

VH demos are the best thing to listen to and find if you want your DLR fix

parkersvx90210 4 years ago
Actually It's You Really Got Me and Running With the Devil because the video has tapping and running with the devil doesn't have tapping and You Really Got Me does.

Great song. I know everyone loves MA but he clearly sucks. Don't think his singing will be missed like everyone says, watch the HOF.

Theo80126 4 years ago
It's too long for the era. That is why they didn't put it on record.

How funny indeed. Considering this was never taped, nor was any of the first world tour, I'm lucky any of it synced.

cool tune, they played a little bit of this on the 1984 tour. I have a bootleg from sweden and this tune is on it
coolhand71 5 years ago
I have (had it but lost it) that bootleg, but they didn't play this song during that concert. The person who made the bootleg added two early songs to the end and it almost fooled me at first.

Cool tune but it has nothing to do with You're No Good. Thanks for the vid, hadn't seen this before.
RockFiend111 5 years ago
It was rewritten both mucically and lyrically to fit the song of You're No Good they heard. It shares the same tempo and key.
5150EVH5150 5 years ago
@5150EVH5150 Well Eddie played mostly in A flat all the time. He would play E flat to A flat and to Dflat... which are semi-related to blues scales. He would sometimes solo in B flat for a "key change". Billy Gibbons used to pick on him and say, "Have you found the 5 (chord) yet?", referring to the fact he rarely played the "5" like you do in blues tunes.
Eddie really played simply, but the played the shit out of the few chords he used. He did get more complex with Hagar though.

The only thing that is the same from You're No Good is the opening chords. Nothing like it, but everyone always says they're like the same song.
