I've seen males help drive off enemies, too. Male polistes seem to be more developed than other male wasps / bees.

interesting indeed.
i am gonna post my footage of similar behaviour observed in the japanese wild colony, as a vid response here, if u do not mind.
and i have also seen males taking part in fanning the nest in hot days.
perhaps Polistes paper wasps are not so developed/sophisticated in terms of division of labour (caste).
