    No perdaís vuestras raices¡¡

  • The USA influence has nearly wiped out all of our Hispanic culture. Now many Chamorros are lost with their identity. I wish that we were able to continue our contact with the Hispanic world. But thanks to people like you who put this video, we have a new opportunity to rejoin the global Hispanic community. I spent most of my life not knowing what is Chamorro. But now I discovering so much of it. Thank you mindurri2007 for recognizing us as Hispanics. I feel like part of something big now.

your comment to me excited, I am delighted to know that my video to like you. from spain to guam always feel like part of our history

. thank you very much for your comment

  • The Spanish were the only keepers of our documented & recorded history. When the Spaniards were removed from Guam in 1898, Guam lost all contact with Spain. The USA imposed their educational system on Guam and Chamorros were only taught of USA history. It is up to us Chamorros, with the asistance of the Spanish, to rediscover much of our history that was recorded by Spain. The USA education system never taught us of our own Chamorro history. The Spanish can teach us so much that we dont know.

  • I think the only way to know their true history guam and recover, will be independent of United States

  • All I know from U.S. history, is that after the Spanish-American war, an independent Cuba emerged. Spain's last bastions of her world-wide empire -the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico- were ceded to the U.S.A. All were "unincorporated" territories. Meaning, they would be territories, but would not ever be considered to join the union. Most of the 50 states (minus the original 13 colonies) were "incorporated" territories first. Apparently these 3 island nations did not fit the WASP mode.

  • puerto rico and guam soon be independent, and Hispanic guam recall its past, something that seems to oblivion

  • ¡Hola Guam!

  • jose is a racist

  • but yea i guess thats all behind us.. but i still wouldnt say that we are exactly "one with Spain" and im not sure if this was like an anti american promo but a lot of chamorros dont seem to have a problem with the U.S. sooo... yea

  • I think a lot of Chamorros don't seem to have a problem with the U.S. because they don't know their own Chamorro history. So many stateside Chamorros don't even acknowledge their "Chamorro-ness". The U.S. has done more to impact the demise of the Chamorro culture in the last 60 years than the Spanish did in 350 years.

  • Im pretty sure that if there were any efforts to destroy the Chamorro culture it has about ended now and now its just the responsibility of the natives to preserve it not the Americans, and many young chamorros arent learning chamorro because their parents fail to pass on the culture, that isnt the governments responsibility, i mean look at the chinese in American, they are actually making an effort and they have been successful. Many of my friends go to cultural schools where they learn

  • But the chinese have a much greater population than Chamorros. At least they havea homeland that still speaks Chinese. Chamorros coming back to Guam do not have that. Our numbers are dwindling in our own homeland. Sad to say, but it doesnt look good for us. What happened to the native americans is happening to us. We are becoming minority in our own land. The CHinese see the economic benefits of learning thier language. That is the motivation. Chinese language is not in danger of dying.

  • (continuing)

Right now there is no economic benefit in speaking Chamorro. It is the reason Chamorros decided to stop speaking Chamorro. English speaking meant better future for most. Not just with Chamorros, but for most immigrants to the USA. What is different with us is that we did not have to immigrate to USA. The USA came here.

  • Well yes thats true, but im sure that chinese people dont speak chinese just to have business opportunities, and so what if our numbers are dwindling, there are cultures all over this world that are dwindling but they still hold onto their culture, whatever the case is it is the parents fault that their children dont speak not governments not the American peoples fault, blaming it on Americans or the government wont solve the problem. And our numbers arent dwindling on Guam, i still see a strong

  • (continued) Chamorro influence on Guam, and many students seem to have picked up an interest in preserving chamorro culture, not only that but you forget that in the CNMI Chamorro is still very dominant, I still feel that blaming our cultural problems on the US is not a reasonable way to see our situation, if Chamorros would just encourage their children to speak Chamorro like many other immigrant families do, then we wouldnt have this problem.

  • What about the government of Guam? Many cultures are losing their languages today. Not just Chamorro. All the islands of Micronesia are vulnerable. CNMI also is threatened. Why does Puerto Rico still speak Spanish? Maybe because the US gave them more power earlier on than they did with Guam. I think US government is partly to blame. The war experience in Guam also change the psyche of the Chamorro people. Anything American was considered good. American was the promise land for many.

  • (continuing) Military restrictions (made by the US govt.) for Guam did not allow Chamorros to pursue the "American" dream that so many desired. So there was a mass exodus from Guam after the war and since. This gave room for outsiders to come in pursue thier own "American" dream here in Guam. US govt. decisions allowed for the influx of immigration to Guam. CNMI has more control over immigration than we do. Hmm? Maybe that's why Chamorro is strong there. So yes, the US govt. is partly to blame

  • Continued... I mean im not bashing it or anything but i just think its kinda funny, but yea we have a lot of food in common, and religion, but the letter ñ we have always had that sound its a part of our language but we just didnt have a writing system so its not really like we got the idea from Spain... im just sayin... but yea and no offense but... Spain was the one who ended our pure blood line sooo and then put us in a concentration camp and sold our land to the Carolinians sooo... idk

  • Ummm, the U.S. didnt destroy all the spanish buildings... they were destroyed in WWII... i dont realy know where you got the idea (no offense but i believe Spain was apart of the opposing team..) also we are actually one of the colonies of Spain that managed to retain our language so... i think we are actually one of the least in common with Spain i mean i dont speak Spanish, we have a lot of words yea but not Spanish...

  • The U.S. bombardment of Guam during WWII destroyed all the Spanish buildings in the capital. So yes, it was the U.S. that destroyed them. The Japanese bombing of Guam at the beginning of the war was minimal compared to what the U.S. did.

  • Well i mean whats better, save our buildings or die i mean yea it was at the hands of the US but i mean i would let them do it if it meant that i would live, you forget that the Chamorros wanted to be liberated so we cant complain, its apart of the process, look at all the other wartorn countries, they dont stop bombing to save buildings...

  • just look around about Afganistan, Irak...Yankees go home!

  • Culturally speaking, Chamorros have more in common with the Hispanic world than the U.S. Our isolation is probably what allowed us to continue with the language. You may not speak Spanish, but you are now speaking English. Is English supposed to be better? All my (Chamorro) great-grandfathers could speak both Spanish and Chamorro. Imagine if Spanish and Chamorro were the main languages here. I wish I could speak more Spanish. I've got some Spanish ancestry, so why not learn to speak it.

  • When the japanese troops invades Guam, many guameños were forced to be part of the Japan Army...later when the americans got Guam, there was cruently battle, many guameños and japanese were killed and one of them thought that some one of the american soldiers talked spanish, who recalled of chilhood age that his relatives and the missionary catholics speakes in spanish, it was so how this guameño saved his life

  • The Chamorros were never forced to be part of the Japan army. No Chamorros were ever given any guns or army equipment. Chamorros were forced to work for the Japanese. Almost like slaves. THe Chamorros were forced many things, but never to be part of Japan army. Many Chamorros in this war time could still speak Spanish.

  • It's correct Karaku, i didn't means that "guameños" (chamorros)were part of japan army like soldiers, but it's correct thet they were forced to work wiht the japan army against their will.

That chronicle i've read in the Reader's Digest about the history of youger recruit in the WWII

  • So many of us Chamorros easily forget that at the time of the war, there was still a significant number of Spanish speaking Chamorros. All born in the Spanish era which ended in 1898. But because of the U.S., we have lost touch with our Hispanic heritage. If Spanish language education had continued, we would have so much more in common with the Hispanic/Latino world. Now here we are trying so hard to be "Americans". Why were we not allowed to continue communication with the Hispanic world?

  • It is almost certain that the Spanish explorers arrived shortly after 1527, however there is no hard evidence that the pilot John Gaetano, a Spanish navigator, has visited the archipelago in 1555. With regard to the route of the Spanish Galeón

  • Galeón Manila or Nao of China, although this, following his return to Mexico in the flow of Kuro Siwo not exactly happening on the islands Hawaii, as the archipelago is in a straight line between the Philippines and coasts Western New Spain is highly likely that, at socaire of winds, many Hispanic ships arrived at Hawaii (Jauái). John Gaetano in 1555 has left a description as a document in which he claims to have seen some islands called "Unfortunately", "The Bureau"

  • and "The Monks", which coincided with latitude in Hawaii but were considered 10 more degrees to the east. However, the distance from "10 degrees" This can be explained more by the imprecise instrumental Europeans possessed of the sixteenth century to measure lengths and variable measures and meridians baseline (as there is now a Meridian 0 st universal use for reference), however latitudes identified by the discoverers Hispanics are practically the same as those where the Hawaii.

  • However, Spain never took formal claim to these islands. On the other hand, and well after the January 18, 1778 James Cook and his crew, in trying to discover the almost legendary Step Northwest between Alaska and Asia, were surprised to find these high islands in the North Pacific, called the Cook Islands Sandwich, because of the help that you give the then first lord of the Admiralty English John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich.

  • The Hispanic presence is adequately supported and in the eighteenth century: for example Francisco de Paula Marin and lived in Hawaii since 1793 1837 without being a physician, acting as a sort of royal family physician jauaiana with which emparentó , which is why the Kamehameha dynasty could declare that Hispanics had lineages. Indeed F. Paula and Marin also left some Spanish words in the local language which can still be heard there

  • yep that's right.. i knew that hawaii was part of spain becoz of the trades like mexico...

  • Hawaii was not part of spain. Hawaii was discoverd around 1776. 250 years after the phillippines. it was the English that influenced hawaii.

  • Kuraku / if there were contacts between Filipino and hawai, in the time in which both philippines as guam were part of spain, was also some islands of hawai part of spain, the hawai discovered a Spanish boats and prodecentes of guam and went to philippines Hawaii

  • josejaku what are you talking about? filipinas was/ will always be part of spain.. stop saying that filipinas is not part of spain because we were and we will always be part of spain okay?

  • Guam and has many common history with Filipino because ships from philippines or spain always passed through guam

  • Actually, most ships departing from the Philippines did not stop in Guam. They went directly to Acapulco riding on the major ocean currents that would take them on a more northerly route around the Marianas Islands. After Mexican independence, there was less ships arriving to Guam. Guam became very isolated. Ships were sent from Philippines, but very seldom.

  • Where your bags philippines that was never part of spain?

3me you could say where it comes to philippines his name, the names of the Filipinos, religion, and language chabacano and Tagalog who also has Spanish words?

  • kuraku3 filipinos are part hawaiin. japanese, chinese, spanish and american

  • i know that some hawaiians are part filipino, but i never heard that filipinos are part hawaiian. when did the hawaiians sail to the phillippines?

  • don't you think that philippines was also conquered by japan, china, spain and U.S?

  • STFU philippines is not spain and was never part of spain and it's not close to guam and filipinos are better lookin than guam and spain. filipinos are chinese fuck u!

  • ????.No

  • Ummm... yea way to be racist... i love filipino food and im really tolerant of filipinos but you are just a bastard... you really should watch what you say and yea a lot of filipinos are chinese but i mean your name is Jose... thats definitely Chinese right?

  • What happened in guam almost 500 years ago was a cultural misunderstanding

I think that we should not look at the past if not the present and future, and that future relations between the peoples of philippines, guam, spain and the entire Latin America has to be more friendly as we are friends and we will always.

  • denamenation is the correct spelling .. my bad

  • non dinamenation is a christian church

  • no, U.S doesnt have a specific religion.. I even go any church i want here.. i am roman catholic but since i live here in the u.s i dont have anyone to go with me at catholic church so i go with my friends in their church called the non dinomenation. and guam is U.S territory too they are americanized

  • for how long though?

  • Island guam was the most hispanizada of all islands in the Pacific. Capital City made the Spaniards also in guam its inhabitants have names and surnames Spanish and the language of the Chamorro Island is a mixture of Spanish and native language, y su religion es catolica como en españa en estados unidos son protestante

  • there are two common things actually lol my bad

  • i think guam is very near philippines and they all look filipinos that's my perspective. there are one common between guam and philippines. they are both colonized by Japan and U.S,and they both speak english.

  • Guam is 1600 miles from Manila. Or about a 3 hour flight. And not 'all' people from Guam look Filipino. Many Chamorros look Mexican. Some look Hawaiian. Some look Japanese. And some even look white! It depends on the persons family history. But please know that Chamorros are NOT Filipinos. We don't speak Tagalog. Our Chamorro language is a blend of the original language and words borrowed mostly from Spanish and English.

  • yea me too, i did not know that guam was colonized by spain, but as far as i know spain landed on guam just for a few hours.they did not really do what they did to philippines. spanish got robbed by the guam people and magellan and the spaniards went back to their expidition then landed in philippines. actually magellan called guam ladrones island. and i dont know how guam was part of spain empire, but i know they are U.S territory. and these are facts

  • If the native Chamorros did not offer food and water and shelter to Magellan's crew, he would never have made it to the Phillippines. When Magellan arrived in Guam, most of his crew were undernourished and weak. If not for the Chamorro's hospitality, they would not have been able to continue.

  • yea me too, i did not know that guam was spanish too,but as far as i know spain landed on guam just for a few hours. spanish got robbed by the guam people and magellan actually called guam ladrones island. and i dont know how guam was part of spain empire

  • Guam was the only port between Acapulco and Manila where the Spanish Galleons could rest and replenish. These ships brought many Mexican sailors and laborers to Guam. The Spanish government established a colony here and that is how Guam was part of the Spanish empire.

  • how many days did the spanish rule guam? like 1 day after they got robbed?

  • Guam was ruled by Spain for almost 300 years. The Chamorro people of Guam were accused of robbing Magellan, who arrived here and helped himself to whatever the native Chamorros had. Magellan did not reciprocate, and so the natives boarded Magellan's ship and took what was rightly due to them as a payment of exchange. Call is stealing, but one thing that is fact, is that when he arrived in the Phillippines he was killed. Does that make the Filipinos murderers?

  • Thanks so much for this video. It was truly enlightening and up until now, the history of our island was limited to WWII during the Japanese occupation. Yes, we had knowledge of the Spanish rule and Magellan's landing is celebrated annually, but not as extensive as you have shown. My father has said we had spanish blood, but I thought it was just an old joke. Now I know where I get my good looks... :))

  • If it was spain, while filipinas.ahora only spoken in guam 7.500personas guam in Spanish, but the Spanish are doing is very important in the world, and in the future more certain that the talk....

  • i did not know that guam was once part of spain. i thought ferdinand magellan and company just landed on guam just to be robbed by the thieves.

  • The native Chamorros only took what Magellan should have offered them in exchange for the food, water, and shelter that the Chamorros provided him when he arrived. So what! The Chamorros took a few pieces of iron and other small articles, but it was the Spanish who robbed the Chamorros of their culture, language, customs, foods, religion, and traditions.

  • numero#1!!!!!! PERFECTO!

  • de nada! besos!

  • muchas gracias gwapin24!!
