i hate this stupid ribbon. hate it hate hate it. the ribbon is in everything now and it is horrid. people have being using the same interface for 20 years for pete's sake and it worked great. change the things that need to be changed microsoft!!! they did add some nice features and it would be nice to be able to use them, but i can't freaking find anything in this labyrinth of hell. who programmed this? isn't it standard in programming to focus on functionality before UI?
What's most telling about 'The Ribbon' is that the tossers at Microsoft didn't give us, the users, the OPTION of not using it. They didn't say "Well, we can easily put in drop down menus, which you are all used to, and MAY prefer over 'the Ribbon'". No, they completely got rid of them - because if we had the choice, MOST of us would NOT use the Ribbon - and protecting their precious egos was more important than actually giving the customers what they want! How pathetic.
@packoftwenty My firm has belatedly moved from Word 2003 to this pile of shite and to make matters worse, it has applied its own set of customisation on top of the hideous ribbon. Functionality and productivity has taken a nosedive and I for one am thoroughly pissed off that I can't find anything. In word 2003 I knew what was in every menu drop down list and the keyboard shortcuts to access them. WFT were the developers at Microsoft smoking that they thought word 2010 was a brilliant idea?
What purpose do the icons serve, in 'The Ribbon'? No purpose at all, none whatsoever. Nobody remembers commands by their icons. They are useless 'eye candy'.
Using the tabs is like playing 'find the lady' with cards - completely unintuitive, impossible to remember where commands are. Well done for keeping your temper and remaining cool while talking about how crap the Ribbon is, I would have lost it halfway through mate!
Microsoft is trying to dumb down Windows and Windows aps in order to be more Apple-esque (think about the file search in XP and older - and the search in Vista and 7);. This ribbon is another attempt to make things bigge and more icon-esque like Mac. Whatta waste.
Yup, the ribbon is shite, it takes up screen space it is all over the place with its design of big and small and wordy buttons - it was probably designed by a committee of monkeys.
Well said, I think office 2007 is horrible with the new 'simpler' layout. I have often tried finding a function in the menu, failed and went on open office. The ribbon must die >:).
