  • the Master slap bass of the world!!!!!

  • I saw this when I was 13....two weeks later I bought my first bass in high school. Thank you Vail for the inspiration :)

  • vail johnson is a beast, i never get bored listening to this solo ,and he has a great stage act too

  • yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah! brilliant!

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I cringe at hearing the standard "white guy playing bass like that" comment.

  • Esse cara eh bom pacas, mas vc jah ouviu falar de victor wooten??? vail naum eh o melhor nem aki nem na china, talvez seja o melhor que vc conheça.

  • mullet hurts my eyes! but bass playing makes my ears happy!

  • That's a mean mullet!

  • Vail is all business in the front, but a straight up party in the back.

  • It sounds so good....very good player.

  • Wow! Still amazing after all these years! Kenny G Live is the only Kenny G CD I own and it's all because of this guy!

  • @ 0:11 he tells the truth about kenny g. He doesnt listen to the band becuse he is tone death

  • I can't say I'm that keen on this phase of Kenny G's music although there were really fuckin' amazing moments between bass and drums. But have you heard Kenny Gorelick in The Jeff Lorber Fusion? Wow, far from the cheese he got famous for. Fair play to him.

  • one of my favorite bass solos. brings back memories.

  • Вот настоящий музыкант играет!

  • Kenny G may be the least interesting musician in Kenny G's band.

  • I wore this out on VHS back in the day.

  • born genius !!

  • Is this snoop dog's drummer? Sure it is.

  • Hooo hoooo hhoooooo si fucking amazing. Perfect slap pop combination yeahhhhhh

  • Stanley Clarke is beTTer !!! :P

  • sweet mullet!

  • 1:47 - 1:55 ...necessary? haha

  • I got a Kubicki, GREAT bass. Dude, ditch that cheese ball mullet.

  • KUBICKI X- FACTOR BASS

  • one of the best recognised bass solo in he world! a classic!

  • one of the best recognised bass solo in he world! a classic!

  • esse baixo é o ex factor com chave de mudança a corda mi vira uma ré num simples toque o baixo é animal e caro!!

  • damn! the last minute or so of that solo was crazy.but it made me feel kinda homophobic.

  • esse cara e fera aprendi fazer este solo com meu baixo strinberg

  • vail made markas miller gay.

  • his mullets rules XD

  • damn ! That white boy is a bad mofo !

  • thas a baaaaaaad MOFO !!!! go head WHITE BOY !

  • thas a bad MOFO bra !!!!! FUCKIN WHITE BOY is BAD !

  • do anyone have the tab for the beginning? before the slap part... ??

  • @lemigrant I would like to transcript it to you, but I have no time to do it. Sorry.

  • white boy throwin down on bass...he killed it with that lil slap solo

  • i think hes influence is Mark King of Level42. or he looks like usin same style but with the humping added XD mark king is better i think. and ryan martinie is even more better XD the guy could do this with pure improvision i think ^^ but good basist :=) awesome

  • Those three bassist are totally different. I can't see how can you compare them.

  • Well actually i cant compare them but if you would have to choose wich one is best i would choose that way... but well the best part is that neither one of those plays bass with pick so... its great :=) respect.. pick is for guitars xd

  • @KamiDisturbed That's your subjective opion. As for playing with pick. That's just one of the techniques. It's good to know different techniques because it gives youa bigger tonal spectrum. Don't limit yourself to just one type of sound. Explore. Peace.

  • really this is one of the largest bassplayers than the world already saw!!

  • great bass solo!!

  • bussiness in the front party in the back...

  • 10/10 for the bass playing

    0/10 for the mullet

0/10 for humping the bass at 01.52

0/10 for wearing a shirt with no sleeves

    0/10 for showing off

  • And those pants.....

  • Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get that hair?

  • ha ha

  • I was expecting SO much more...

  • My soul has just been set free x_x

  • Awesome +.+

  • Not as technically mind blowing as, say, a Victor Wooten solo, but the coordination with the drummer makes it incredible sounding. 5 stars.

  • wow!!!!

  • 10 out of 10 for the bass playing

0 out of 10 for the mullett

  • That drummer can really wack those drums for a fat bloke.

Sorry, that's not politically correct - He's a stout drummer, I mean he knocks out some fat grooves., some fat beats, heavy rythyms. He's a heavyweight.

  • R.I.P tho. i think he passed away last year? heart attack or something..

  • nahh dude hes still goin strong

  • the drummer? i heard he died..

  • That was my bad i thought you were talking about Vail lol

  • JAJAJA UN TOPU MAL.... ANDA A TOCAR CON EL TOPU DE KENNY g....... AMANERADO !!!

  • excelente baixista!!!! referencia total !!!!

vida longa ao vail johnson !!!

  • OOOhhhh......my god!....is so good!

    I'll be like you!

    Congratulations!!!!!

  • this guy an les claypool are differant styles, no comparrison, both legends.

  • Kenny G = macho

    uhhh no

  • another white guy bettter than him...LES CLAYPOOL. Kenny, you need to get out more!

  • Les doesn't get close to this guy

  • are you on meth?? listen to Awakenings and Les Claypool's Master Of Puppets and compare him to this clown? no contest...

  • I'm a big fan of Les, Primus, and The Holy Mackerel. The two music styles are very different, but I must say that generally across the board, jazz is more difficult and those who play it are more inventive in their improv. Although its close, my money is with Vail.

  • never heard of a white guy that could play like that????? HAVE THEY NEVER HEARD OF FLEA?????????

  • Flea can only play funk rock, don't get me wrong, he's good at it, but that's the only element he's strong in.

  • Saw Vail play a few times at the Studio Cafe in Newport back in the '90's. Red P-Bass. Sitting right in front of him. Absolutely astonishing talent and a really nice guy.

  • All right...not great!!! Andre Gomes is much better bass player than this guy...

  • that's just silly

  • they all need to bow to Victor Wooten...period.

  • this Bass Player

    is the best !!!!!!

  • Sweet Kubicki bass. Have the same color/finish even.

  • esse solço em 10 minutos tava tirado...mumu na chupeta

  • Meu primeiro solo de baixo foi esse. Demorei quatro dias pra tirar todo o solo!!!

    Mas tirei.. uhuúúúll..

  • he needs to get off the juice!!! lol

  • Beautiful solo, not crazy about that tone tho, sounds great for slapping, but sounds too trebbley for my taste when he plays with his fingers the normal way.

  • Thanks bass player. Actually I looking up Chester Thompson after I wrote that and found out that he didn't get that large over the years.

  • Is that Chester Thompson on drums?

  • hey there chuckthecarpenter,,the drummers name is bruce carter,,fantastic drummer who unfortunately has passed away....

  • great solo...but i think it's bruce carter on the drums that realy makes it something.

  • Going tobut a bass......V John"s the white bass king.

  • are you guys playing the solo by yourselfs?

  • That fucking mullet is intimidating.

  • A bit pants.... good hair though... we're stuck in E m7 though eh?

  • I played it at Dm7, I think. I used to tune down the E string to D in my 5-string bass to (try to) play the solo.

  • D minor it is.

  • @Tomaius2000 are we????

  • i don't know what's sexier, the mullet or the solo...

  • None of these: the sexier is the bass. *____*

  • No kidding. I always see him playing those basses with the small head. WHat kind is it? It sounds nice.

  • Sorry, I really don't know. But if you take a look at the previous comments, you may find some information about it. Good luck.

  • its a kubicki factor bass

  • @subatom101 I think that might be a steinberger. Famous in the 80s for the headless style. Geddy Lee played one but not too much.

  • @subatom101 This is a Kubuki X Factor Bass. Fender bought them out some years back and when they did thats when Stu Hamm went to playing Fenders because they started using some of those Kubuki designs in pickups and preamps

  • Great mullet!

  • C'mon! Leave the mullet alone! The big deal is the solo!

  • I didn't understand what you mean with all that bullshit, but you'd better explain yourself before I go bersek, got it?

Have a nice bass solo. :)

  • oooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • I agree! ooooooooooooooooooooo

  • For my taste, he hits the neck pickup quite often (the short, hi-pitched note you might have experienced to hear) - anyway, he's great, plus it's comforting to see he puts his pants on one leg at a time. :)

  • does that on purpose for an extra effect, actually.

  • Who is the drummer?

  • Bruce Carter

  • what a bass ... what a sound ... Factor is really great.

  • I don't know what's more impressive: His playing, or his mullet. Fear TeH MulleT!!one!

  • I was being whimsical, humorous, amusing, funny (delete as appropriate) in an english kind of way.You wacky brazilians !!! Thanks for the offer but no need for a drawing. By the way we need to thank the french for the lovely word "derriere".

  • All right. I don't know how to speak french anyway, but I suspected about that word's etymology. So next time you try to be humorous, try to be it in a way not to ridicularize someone in it's culture like you did, ok? It was not intentional, I recognize. But be always careful. Kiss 'n' kall me! (h)

  • In order to suck sugar cane and whistle simultaneously you require the use of two orifices......are you sure that's whistling you can hear from Vails derriere??

  • No way, man. It's a brazilian way to say that a person can do marvelous things. Understood enough or will I have do draw it? :D

  • I almost forgot to thank you for let me know a new english word I didn't know till then: 'derriere'. (_|_) LoL

  • Excellant bass solo !

  • One of the best I've ever heard. You will become crazy if you watch to Cheiro de Vida's videos in youtube. This brazilian Jazz-Prog-Rock band is one of the schools of the technique used by Vail Johnson and Victor Wooten. It's worth watchin their videos. Watch and compare.

  • He's good - but he ain't Mark King of Level 42.

Now, this guy can play, sing, chew gum and dance.....all at once !!

  • I wonder if he is able to suck sugar cane and whistle at the same time. Only two people can do this. 1: Chuck Norris, 2: Vail Jonhson.

  • Vail you Rock! In what tone you tune your bass?

  • The power of the mullet!!!

  • what song is this? its awesome

  • This is Kenny G's "Midnight Motion". You can listen another version of this solo in the saxophonist's Live CD Album (Kenny G Live); it's not the same as in the video.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Yes. That's what I just mean!

  • fuckin' groovy !

  • Vail Johnson rules

  • Great! Awesome! This guy is a incredible bassman!

  • Hehehe. I agree in gender, number and grade. 8)

  • One of the best bass solo's you will ever hear,,fantastic groove at 02:52....

  • Sorry. Got the wrong option. You've made a good comment!

  • (h5) O MITO ELE , AINDA CHEGO NESSE NIVEL ;)

  • É. É só treinar. Ele não é o último dos monstros do Slap, tenha certeza. Que vença o melhor!

  • love that mullet! Glad it's from 20 years ago.

  • Well, not 20 years ago, I think. But it was shoot at 1993, don't know exactly. It still remains unreachable!

  • no this video was from the late 80s i first got this on video in 88/89

  • Ok, I quit! It was shoot at 88/89! 8-|

  • LOL! I remember I spent months trying to learn this solo. I got the basics of it but in the end I got fed up and switched to drums instead!!! lol!

  • So I tell you I can't die while I don't learn this solo in the whole. Answer me a thing: does he tune his 4th string at E or at D? I tune mine at D.

    [Sorry for my poor English...]

  • He tunes the E down to a D. On the headstock there is a switch so you can drop the E to a D by flicking it!!!!!!!!!

  • Good to see a decent player still playing Kubicki basses. :o)

  • eu sou o Anderson Presenza Lima e...

    achei´muito massa esse vídeo

    muito show
