that thing ! [creature] caught in a place he cant stir from in the dark/nothing to live for but his memories,, his cars ,guns ,gadgets ,gimmicks and yet the whole family cant bring him down....this is excellent writing..telling the story in a single excellent speech.....
Poignant score pieces from an excellent (and poignant) movie. Anthony Zerbe's Mathias and his articulate 'The Family' Cult and opposition to Heston's Neville is what really makes it a sort of great movie.
This would be a good Movie-Combination, if at the End of "Planet of the Apes" Charlton Heston would ride into the forbidden Zone, and then the Story of the Omega Man begins. But the Name of the Character of Charlton Heston has to be changed into only one Name: "Taylor" or "Robert Neville". Maybe I will make this Video-Cut one day, if I have Time for doing that. This will be a very interresting Work for me :-)
One Great Movie ! I really enjoyed it as a kid and got the DVD and wow ! this movie is still good ! I am legend was okay but Omega Man had all the right stuff ! If I made it today I would also have zombies for day time fun !
This haunting, mournful, religious-tinged music is one of the best scores of any film. The music amplifies the tragic mood and themes of the story perfectly.
Oh, and Xs120 makes an excellent comment about how the central character conflict in "Omega Man" makes this film superior to "I Am Legend." Like any good epic, "Omega" tells an intimate story about individuals caught in outsized circumstances.
XS120, I think there was a hint of conflict in the remake. The driver of Nevilles staff car was the last guy he saw before he blew all the zombies up. Check his uniform, he was a soldier. ANd I think the name badges match.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of The Omega Man.. check out Los Angeles from 1971. Some things have not changed in 40 years since the movie opened and other have.
Hollywood lost a great actor and great American when we lost Charlton Heston. He performed a great service to us all as past president of the NRA and his tireless activism from civil rights to contemporary conservative issues. At least we still have Chuck Norris.
What's the deal with Charleton Heston kissing a niggress? That disturbed me when I was a kid and it disturbs me now. What kind of an Omega Man pisses away his race and breeds with a darkie? May as well let the mutants win, because that's all he's going to produce.
This movie was just so 1970s in its style. The clothes, music, acting and even special effects are just so perfectly pulled off! Easily one of the best classics the 1970s has to offer. I think it deserves to be up there with Jaws, The Godfather and Star Wars in terms of excellence.
Bizarre comment about remakes when this was first made with Vincent Price ' last man on earth' But still a classic. The Will Smith effort dismisses and so did Omega Man to a certain degree the fact your are meant to realise that Neville is actually the bad guy. Hence 'I am legend' he is the bogey man to the Vampires as he goes around slaying them while they sleep all day.
@RT10cold - However in the film Vincent Price was not aware he was either the bad guy or a legend... That I found interesting, not to mention his onion reserves...
I just agree this was a brilliant film and why remake it with a coloured bloke, much as I like Will Smith why wouldn't you use a white actor!" political correctness again makes me sick!
I love this soundtrack. Does anyone have a scan of the booklet that the FSM release came with? I bought it disc-only from FSM years ago. That's all they had left.
HESTON WAS THE BEST, AS WELL AS MY BOYHOOD HERO! FEW ACTORS OF TODAY HAVE THE PRESENCE HE COMMANDED..AS WELL, THE 70'S WERE A MUCH SIMPLER TIME FOR KIDS TO GROW UP IN WITH BELIEVEABLE ACTORS WHOMWALKED THEIR TALK! DAMN SHAME HESTON IS NOW GONE, YET IMMORTALIZED IN FILMS SUCH AS THESE FOR ONE TIME YOUNG LADS LIKE I TO ADMIRE AND TRY TO EMMULATE.
It's an amazing theme, because it sounds so mild by itself, but so horrifying when put to the images of the film. One of my faves. I first saw it when I was eleven, and it scared the crap out of me.
Technically, this movie is not a "remake" of "The Last Man on Earth". It is a re-telling of the original story, "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. Yes, LMOE is much closer to the original story, than OM. This does not mean that OM is not a good movie. Nor does it make LMOE a bad one. Both are very good movies. in their own right. BTW, if OM is a remake, then wouldn't "Night of the Living Dead" be, also?
ONE OF THE FINEST 'MODERN' SCI-FI FILMS OF ALL TIME. YOU COMBINE CHARLTON HESTON [A TRUE LEGEND] WITH AN UNBELIEVABLY GREAT SOUNDTRACK AND VOILA! THIS IS A TRUE CLASSIC IN EVERY SENSE. TOO BAD THERE ARE NO MORE CHARLTON HESTONS OR IMAGINATIVE PEOPLE TO MAKE GOOD FILMS ANYMORE. THEY ALL SUCK!
@oldschoolhero2006 Hear ,Hear ! Chuck was a great actor and American and "The Omega Man is in so many ways superior to the recent sequel "I am Legend". Ron Grainer's soundtrack is magnificent.
Really dark, depressing movie based on Matheson's "I Am Legend" worked on two levels, as a sci-fi thriller because it warned against biochemical warfare (today we worry about genetically modified foods and superflus, that type of thing), and also as a parable about race relations. The Matheson book is still superior to any of the films made from it, including the Will Smith version. Ron Grainer's music is really brilliant, as always.
You are all so right! Hollywood is so out of control with the remakes. They are clueless and brainless empty suits. Fortunately we have the classics and have been able to experience them in its original form. Crustyconrad I agree with you 100%.
I saw Omega Man when I was 8 years old- and this theme still takes me back to those days. It was terrifying, far worse to me than Planet of the Apes. Then and now, all too plausible........without doubt, one of my favorite films of all time.
Only a sadly jaded, ignorant culture would pan this work.
Yeah, a truly great movie with a truly great soundtrack. Problems with "I am Legend" (the movie): (1) They drained the story of a lot of its dramatic & thematic tension by reducing Neville's antagonists to mere animals. (2) They turned Neville's character into a 2-dimensional good guy by removing the element of his actively hunting down his adversaries (probably to make him more PC). (3) They undermined the critical theme of solitude by giving Neville a dog to talk to.
Seems like nobody here has actually read I am Legend, which is the story of the last human on earth being REPLACED by a new species created by a 'disease'. The title of the book refers to the fact that the last human has become a 'legend', a mythological creature like a unicorn or a big foot to the new intelligent species on the planet, a creature of dreams or nightmares, but not real.
@ryoushii Thank you for trying to remind people about the source that even this great classic differs so much from. I hope it gets an accurate adaptation one day.

@RoryRedBrooklyn Music, the soundtrack of this film was awful. Feel good music for dramatic film. Just awful. if it would have a better score, it would be a classic.
I just keep wondering why this movie doesn't get air play anymore!? It used to be on tv all the time. Can't remember the last time it was shown. Not even the local stations touch it. I think that is a shame. Especially with all the crap that is shown, all the time. Just because a movie is older, doesn't mean that it sucks!
I've always loved the music and the film since a child, but I must say that i am L was great acting by will and would have been even better than OM if it hadnt been for the lame and phoney horror film mtant things and stupid noises they made...who thought if that! if the infected had been nearer to the text and mearly a transformed race, it could have been perfect. Hats off to Will though, didnt think he could act that well, i was wrong. Neil
i was to. but not really. they were a very limited production run on the orginal cd version sadly. so thats why. just finding a mint original copy was a pain.
but..they just made a new production run version so now its 25 bucks new again and remastered i heared. yeah.
Fantastic movie! It was the conflict between Neville (Heston) and Matthias (Zerbe) that made this a great film....something that was totally absent from the "I Am Legend" remake with Will Smith. Will was good, but the CG mutants are lame. That remake deserved to air on the SyFy channel right after "Gargoyles."
@Xs120 I did not really think about it that much! I've always been a fan of this movie since I first saw it back in the 70's. But I have to say you are totally correct!
ya it wasant that good. it was rushed had lame cgi or whatever that was and there was no family. just monsters. kinda like today. nothing new.
it was ok though but this chit all over it. the part where neville says i caught one of them and the bastard and he almost killed me! insert scene of neville body slamming the maggot over the table chit all over any scene in i am. the soundtrack is nearly immortal in this also.
Thanks for the nice words, Bubbles! I just bought this movie on Blu-Ray-- Wish they had more "special features," but watching again in such clairtity is a real treat.
A mi entender a esta cancion que es el tema central de la pelicula le falta fuerza. Pudo ser parte del soundtrack, pero no debio ser el principal. Con un soundtrack adecuado este film hubiera sido un exito total de taquilla.
This is one of the best movies to ever come out of the 70's, (in my opinion) it made an impact on me that i will never forget, it was one of the first horror/thriller movie that i saw as a kid, and to this day each time i watch it, it gets better and better.Hollywood will never create a classic such as this. Charlton Heston is the man.
Thanks Beagle3561, i'm glad that someone out there can appriciate such a fine movie, I'll say it over and over again they will NEVER create a remake to out do the original, just watching Charlton Heston is enough for me.
@MsBubbles66 I also saw this movie as a kid and thought it was terrifying yet strangely addicting to watch over and over. Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe MADE this film!
I couldn't agree with you more. This movie gave me one of the worst nightmares of my childhood. But it now stands as a favorite of mine and the music stays with you.
the christ story? its crackers like you that gives religion such a bad taboo, its about a disease wiping out mankind and turning humans into zombies. the christ story? ok then, so is saving private ryan!
Sweet, melancholy sound track. Completely appropriate to the story line. It has a quality of both sadness and desperation. I noticed that Mathius appears to be the broadcaster who earlier speaks about the end of the earth.
This movie is so good, just so well done in every way! I hate that they felt they had to remake it to make a cheap buck. When will the Hollywood studio scum stop. Leave the classics alone!!..No more remakes of Pink Panther, The Omega man, Poseiden adventure,The day the earth stood still, The Omen, The planet of the apes and on and on. Now I just read they are gonna remake Rosemary's baby...yet another classic for them to crap on.
Unfortunately, it was one of those novels (I Am Legend) that would be doomed to remaking. Personally , I like The Omega Man the best, with The Last Man on Earth not terribly far behind (but still a ways to go IMHO regardless of excellent cinematics portrayed in this 1971 remake) and certainly better than the 2007 bomb that Will Smith (no offense) put his name on.
"Rosemary's Baby" remake!?! No!! God do those zombies in Hollywood have any original ideas left? Augh! Look at how many great films they've butchered:"Get Carter", "The Taking Of Pelham 123", "The Omega Man" etc.
@CrustyConrad: Are u kidding me? First of all... The Omega Man WAS A REMAKE!!!! Even the director, Boris Sagal, hated the final cut... Have u read the initial script? It was AMAZING compared 2 what was actually shot and what ultimately made the cut... "... so well down in every way..." WHAT???? You have got 2 b kidding... Look... The best version of was the FIRST... Vincent Price's The Last Man On Earth...
@CheBroadway I quite agree. I've always wished that the original novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson would have been filmed as written. As you say, the closest (and best) version was "The Last Man On Earth" with the great Vincent Price.
This version though, does have some very fine moments in it though.
@CheBroadway I disagree , i think the Charlton Heston version was better. I thought Price was a bit wooden in the first film , although i am a huge fan of Price.
The second film also appeared to have a bigger budget and so was more epic in scale. I guess its all subjective though.
@CrustyConrad I wouldn't say remakes are generally a bad idea. Kaufmans Invasion of the Body Snachers, Carpenters The Thing, Cronenbergs The Fly and a few others, including The Omega Man, were pretty good movies.
@CrustyConrad, Hollywood is too strung out on dope and leftist politics to be creative. Tabloid news about their own miserable lives is the only thing left for them to create and market that isn't copied from something else..
Great music -- perfectly complements the film. And you have to love Charlton Heston in a green Austin Powers suit playing chess with a bust of Julius Caesar! Your move, Imperator!
You'd be lucky to get it my friend, unless you want to spend a couple of hundred dollars on ebay. Some prat at S.A.E. decided to limit the release to a couple of thousand copies, which sounds a lot, but it ain't.
damn. i wish i was the omega man. hes got automatic weapons, his own pad,and a hot chic.sadly, ive just got jackie. (my right hand.)no automatic weapons, and no hot chick. this sucks!
I liked this musical clip sooo much that I purchased the entire Omega Man soundtrack from "Screen Archives Entertainment" for under $20 when I learned that they'd made it available. The music is EXCELLENT and the quality is phenomenal. I have no ties to them whatsoever other than as a satisfied customer.
at night he gets smashed on Scotch and plays chess with with a statue. At Day he rooms the streets of LA Watching the same movie over and over and over and over when he's not stealing Mustangs from Car Dealerships! HE IS!!! THE OMEGA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it was a good throw of the spear by matthias at the end of the film, rather creepy, chilling with blood curdling accuracy, but unfortunate for robert neville...
a classic film will be remembered through the passage of time..
Actually, Both the Price movie, and this movie are based on the book 'I am Legend' which Will Smith made a third stab at, this time using the book title for the movie.
Chuck's "living high in the light" now, along with Ron, Rosalind Cash, "Brother Zachary" Lincoln Kilpatrick and Boris Sagal, in that great fortified brownstone penthouse in the sky.
dude, this is 10 years before my time but it's my favorite movie of all time. Did anybody know that this is a re-make of The Last Man On Earth (Vincent Price)?
This film has haunted me since I was a kid, and the soundtrack has occasionally gone round my head ever since I saw the movie for the first time. Great movie and great soundtrack. Chuck is a God!!
This has been my favorite movie since I was eight years old, don't really know why. I guess Chuck just has that way in his acting in this great flick. I'm 41 now...dam!
Good job Ron :)

@Xs120 I couldn't have said it better myself! The theme song itself has more meaning than the entire remake "I am Legend"!

ledbetterkilla 7 months ago 4
@Xs120 I did not really think about it that much! I've always been a fan of this movie since I first saw it back in the 70's. But I have to say you are totally correct!
DrFrankensteam 5 months ago
ya it wasant that good. it was rushed had lame cgi or whatever that was and there was no family. just monsters. kinda like today. nothing new.
it was ok though but this chit all over it. the part where neville says i caught one of them and the bastard and he almost killed me! insert scene of neville body slamming the maggot over the table chit all over any scene in i am. the soundtrack is nearly immortal in this also.

Thanks for the nice words, Bubbles! I just bought this movie on Blu-Ray-- Wish they had more "special features," but watching again in such clairtity is a real treat.

I have always loved the music from this film - Ron Grainer did so many fine themes ( The Prisoner, Doctor Who), Endless thanks for posting this up.
TheVicar1956 2 years ago 3
A mi entender a esta cancion que es el tema central de la pelicula le falta fuerza. Pudo ser parte del soundtrack, pero no debio ser el principal. Con un soundtrack adecuado este film hubiera sido un exito total de taquilla.

This is one of the best movies to ever come out of the 70's, (in my opinion) it made an impact on me that i will never forget, it was one of the first horror/thriller movie that i saw as a kid, and to this day each time i watch it, it gets better and better.Hollywood will never create a classic such as this. Charlton Heston is the man.
MsBubbles66 2 years ago 16
Heston will ALWAYS be THE MAN! Nice comment, MsBubbles!
Beagle3561 2 years ago 10
Thanks Beagle3561, i'm glad that someone out there can appriciate such a fine movie, I'll say it over and over again they will NEVER create a remake to out do the original, just watching Charlton Heston is enough for me.
MsBubbles66 2 years ago 3
Re.... this is a remake of "The Last Man on Earth" (1964) featuring Vincent Price, which was from the novel "I am legend". But still a good film.
candr 2 years ago
@MsBubbles66 I also saw this movie as a kid and thought it was terrifying yet strangely addicting to watch over and over. Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe MADE this film!

I couldn't agree with you more. This movie gave me one of the worst nightmares of my childhood. But it now stands as a favorite of mine and the music stays with you.

Sweet, melancholy sound track. Completely appropriate to the story line. It has a quality of both sadness and desperation. I noticed that Mathius appears to be the broadcaster who earlier speaks about the end of the earth.
KurtisERIK 2 years ago 3
Gerat comment. The music is rather sad, but then again, it fits the end of the movie quite well.
Beagle3561 2 years ago
This movie is so good, just so well done in every way! I hate that they felt they had to remake it to make a cheap buck. When will the Hollywood studio scum stop. Leave the classics alone!!..No more remakes of Pink Panther, The Omega man, Poseiden adventure,The day the earth stood still, The Omen, The planet of the apes and on and on. Now I just read they are gonna remake Rosemary's baby...yet another classic for them to crap on.
CrustyConrad 2 years ago 31
Nicely said! This is one of "those films" that should have been left as a classic, because it is.
Beagle3561 2 years ago 3
Unfortunately, it was one of those novels (I Am Legend) that would be doomed to remaking. Personally , I like The Omega Man the best, with The Last Man on Earth not terribly far behind (but still a ways to go IMHO regardless of excellent cinematics portrayed in this 1971 remake) and certainly better than the 2007 bomb that Will Smith (no offense) put his name on.
mpontheair2 2 years ago
"Rosemary's Baby" remake!?! No!! God do those zombies in Hollywood have any original ideas left? Augh! Look at how many great films they've butchered:"Get Carter", "The Taking Of Pelham 123", "The Omega Man" etc.

@CrustyConrad The Omega Man (great film) is a remake of Last man on Earth (great film)

.
The Omega Man is a remake of "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price.
Not all remakes are crap just 99% ;-))
ProtectAus 1 year ago
@CrustyConrad: Are u kidding me? First of all... The Omega Man WAS A REMAKE!!!! Even the director, Boris Sagal, hated the final cut... Have u read the initial script? It was AMAZING compared 2 what was actually shot and what ultimately made the cut... "... so well down in every way..." WHAT???? You have got 2 b kidding... Look... The best version of was the FIRST... Vincent Price's The Last Man On Earth...
CheBroadway 1 year ago
@CheBroadway I quite agree. I've always wished that the original novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson would have been filmed as written. As you say, the closest (and best) version was "The Last Man On Earth" with the great Vincent Price.
This version though, does have some very fine moments in it though.
Peace.
ffjkhguhgft 1 year ago
@CheBroadway I disagree , i think the Charlton Heston version was better. I thought Price was a bit wooden in the first film , although i am a huge fan of Price.
The second film also appeared to have a bigger budget and so was more epic in scale. I guess its all subjective though.
hablerz 1 year ago
@CrustyConrad they havent done a damn thing to the classic, it's still there, so stop moaning.
FilmationArchive 1 year ago
@CrustyConrad I wouldn't say remakes are generally a bad idea. Kaufmans Invasion of the Body Snachers, Carpenters The Thing, Cronenbergs The Fly and a few others, including The Omega Man, were pretty good movies.

@CrustyConrad, Hollywood is too strung out on dope and leftist politics to be creative. Tabloid news about their own miserable lives is the only thing left for them to create and market that isn't copied from something else..

@Nanjing03 I have news for you..hollywood was on dope and had leftist politics before the depression..hehe.
It was only later on they were forced to be more conservative.

You'd be lucky to get it my friend, unless you want to spend a couple of hundred dollars on ebay. Some prat at S.A.E. decided to limit the release to a couple of thousand copies, which sounds a lot, but it ain't.

it was a good throw of the spear by matthias at the end of the film, rather creepy, chilling with blood curdling accuracy, but unfortunate for robert neville...
a classic film will be remembered through the passage of time..

Actually, Both the Price movie, and this movie are based on the book 'I am Legend' which Will Smith made a third stab at, this time using the book title for the movie.
