Steve, is and will be a figure who influenced me leaving an indelible mark on my playing the guitar and my songs, with a unique and personal sound. Synonyms that represent it would be: grand, enigmatic, creative, deep, ethereal, amazing and ... not know how many more! . Thank you Steve!
There are echoes of Genesis -through Steve Hackett -Is it that heavy majestic rock sound of pre-80's Genesis: Trick of the tail / Wind & Wuthering maybe.
Heard this track once way back & it didn't click that it was Steve Hackett so it was all forgotten. Now I've come back to find it and will really get into all the stuff Steve has done since leaving Genesis when at the height of his creative powers.
It's like finding new Music which is old so better still !
Steve Hackett always puts the music before the guitar playing, even though his guitar playing is amazing, the composition and feel of the piece always comes first before showing off with guitar tricks. Although this may be why he didn't get much attention for using tapping and such years before they became famous and popular, it's also why he continues to release incredible, inspiring music long after many of his contemporaries have stopped being relevant. Genius musician, fantastic music.
Steve Hackett is one of my two main musical inspirations, the other being Tony Banks (the irony is astounding) - they both inspired me to play music :) (albeit on keyboard, not guitar) - I'm trying to do a keyboard cover of this. :) I salute you, Steve and Tony. :)
@SirAtkins Boring!? Are you out of your tiny mind? Some people just can't appreciate subtley and dynamics in music can they? How do you expect to have any impact if everything is just loud all the time? The flute is alot like Ravel, pure genius!
reminds me of sundays back in the day... when we would listen to hackett whilst coming down from the acid we had taken the night before. we did that a lot.
as a half a**ed guitar and bass player every time i see steve play i feel like smashing my guitars to pieces because if i practiced every day minute for the rest of my life i couldn't touch his talent-Is he still touring?
Great song!!! Always reminded me of Pink Floyd a bit. This song should have been on a movie soundtrack.....I enjoyed this live rendition of it- not only was Steve good, but the drummer was good too!- and so was the dry ice!....For those trivia buffs like me, that song is from 1980 off of Steve's 4th solo album, "Defector".
For the young aspiring Hackett fans like me... compared to Spectral Mornings and Voyage of the Acolyte, is Defector any good? If this song is any indication, I'll buy it straight away!
Wow, does that bring back memories! I saw this tour when he played Park West in Chicago. Amazing show. Totally inspiring. I still think this was his best backup band. I brought in my 35 mm camera (no one said anything) and still have all the great pics. Thank you for posting this. Hey, maybe now that YTube has HD we can get better quality videos of these??
Love Hackett's solo stuff. The images he seems to have had in his head are so dark, I just love it! This tune has always had a real 'Lord of the Rings' feel to me. Met him once when a friend was putting on some of his acoustic shows, but I was too shy to say anything! Doh!!!
I was there in Montreux and was practically right behind the front cameraman. Steve gave me a smile precisely on this song as he could see how estatic I was during this rendition of probably his most amazing tune!
It is just too bad Hackett and the rest of the Genesis could not of kept going writing music into the 80's. I could only wonder what it would of turned out like. Well, this would give a bit of an idea I suppose because there is much Genesis left in him here and in the rest of the band. Balancing commercial and artistic success would of been one of the challenges. Current Genesis is satisfied with Commercial and Steve is a purist and gets off on artistic success. Hmmmm could of been interesting.
I saw this band in 1980. It's still one of the greatest concerts of my life. An awesomely tight band. Nick Magnus on Keys, John Shearer on drums made our hearts pound (he threw his sticks into the crowd at the end), Chas Cronk of the Strawbs on bass (though it might be Dick Cadbury on this vid), brother John on flute and of course Steve's magic Guitar. He had an Optigan on stage and they did "Sentimental Instituion." I had to go to the restroom at one point. The whole building was shaking!
They had afest here in Dubai and had blokes from the Bee Gees and david gay - their arguement is that jazz is a state of mind - but i reckon - its bums on seats - fill em up and flog the tickets - should all be free that stuff anyway
Saw this tour at Pompey guidhall - not bad and not heard about any Hackett solo material and thought it since - not bad - not sure if I would call it jazz though
There are videos of jethro Tull playing at a jazz festival on youtube somewhere, and while they are playing some of their earlier, more jazzy/bluesy stuff, most of it is hardly what I;'d call jazz either.
Maybe they have their own wierd ways of defining these things ;)
vivalarocka, I visited a journalists symposium 2 days ago and the main agenda was the state female journalism in the UK, after several hours of heated discussions I asked a main question and the answer was, Bloody Hackett's --- from 3,000 poeple.
Gotta give it to the Howe. He's just more technically advanced...but when you get two awesome guitarists together and no one cares who's better(unless you come out with GTR *sigh*).
Maybe it's just the songs that they go with, but I prefer the energy and vibrance of his playing, and I'm really not sure about some of Hackett's more experimental playing. Doesn;t stop his solos Genesis being absolutely incredible though.
STEVE HACKETT thakns for this music....im very hard fan of this great talent and creativity guitar player....defector and spectral morning era its fantastic
And can you imagine that they(the so called genesis) reply to Steve´s ideas with cold silence after the "wind and wuthering" record. No wonder Steve did not show up for the next record.
Steve is such a wonderful guitarist. I can't understand why his ideas were put on ice. Wind And Wuthering was a masterpiece. I'm fortunate to being able to play Blood On The Rooftops and every time I play it, I'm amazed at how beautiful it is. Hackett is a genius.
The 2 guys who influenced Genesis the most(in positive ways) were Mr. Hackett and Anthony Phillips before him. It was amazing that they could lose one great guitarist and then get another one who is as equally talented. They have both done alot of brilliant work as solo artists as well. I would love to see them do something together. How great would that be, eh?
only got into hackett about a year ago when a mate played me Spectral Mornings. love this bloke so much, not flashy, not showy, not all squeeling guitars and stuff. doenst let his ego get the better of the music.
This has been one of my longtime favorites of Hackett's, and in my opinion, this is one of the best performances of the song. I liked the Tokyo tapes version a lot, but everyone clicks on this one.
Thanks for posting - nice to see Hackett get some well deserved exposure on youtube. I agree that his departure affected Genesis's sound WAY more than Gabriel's did, yet he never seems to get any credit....
