  • i must of bought 3 defector albums ,,,,,thank god for dvd's

  • bolero 3th millennium *_*

  • I just can't stop playing this!... LOL!

  • this is gold! i missed him in genesis, but i'm glad he is still playing his awesome music XD!!!!!!

  • Just noticed..... the climax note at 5-12 is missing.... otherwise Brilliant! I must have listened to this 20 times now! Amazing piece of music!

  • @prinoski awwwww man! that note in the right place is like reaching heaven

  • an instrumental song to discover, just been listening to it like 15 times in a row lol reminiscent of Ravel's Bolero in places ^^

  • Did a fantastic set at Reading in'79

  • I just love the way this song builds to climax at that solo from 4-40 to 5-20 Drumming reminds me a lot of Bonham.

  • 1:32-1:42 Sounds kind of like Ravel's 'Bolero'.

  • He must be one of the most talented and yet most underrated musicians and especially guitarists.

  • this drummer's sense of timing is incredible.... what an amazing performance of this tune, was brand new at this time too

  • I like the little smile Steve gives to the camera at the 2-minute mark :)

  • @SPeacock yeah... lol he makes me creazy!!!

  • Harmonic and melodic sense ! great !

  • Steve, is and will be a figure who influenced me leaving an indelible mark on my playing the guitar and my songs, with a unique and personal sound. Synonyms that represent it would be: grand, enigmatic, creative, deep, ethereal, amazing and ... not know how many more! . Thank you Steve!

  • 30 years on, and this is still classic Steve Hackett

  • I think it's an amazing musical construction! Praise STEVE!!! this one goes throw bone and soul.

  • There are echoes of Genesis -through Steve Hackett -Is it that heavy majestic rock sound of pre-80's Genesis: Trick of the tail / Wind & Wuthering maybe.

Heard this track once way back & it didn't click that it was Steve Hackett so it was all forgotten. Now I've come back to find it and will really get into all the stuff Steve has done since leaving Genesis when at the height of his creative powers.

It's like finding new Music which is old so better still !

    Truly great track this

  • Steve Hackett for a Knighthood!

  • Steve Hackett always puts the music before the guitar playing, even though his guitar playing is amazing, the composition and feel of the piece always comes first before showing off with guitar tricks. Although this may be why he didn't get much attention for using tapping and such years before they became famous and popular, it's also why he continues to release incredible, inspiring music long after many of his contemporaries have stopped being relevant. Genius musician, fantastic music.

  • Saw the band live at the Manchester Apollo many years ago and met the band after the show. I still have my signed copy of Spectral Mornings.

  • Steve Hackett is one of my two main musical inspirations, the other being Tony Banks (the irony is astounding) - they both inspired me to play music :) (albeit on keyboard, not guitar) - I'm trying to do a keyboard cover of this. :) I salute you, Steve and Tony. :)

  • The Johnny Greenwood of his day??

  • This song is quite directionless and boring for the first 3 minutes then wham!

    Sir Steve Hackett

  • @SirAtkins Boring!? Are you out of your tiny mind? Some people just can't appreciate subtley and dynamics in music can they? How do you expect to have any impact if everything is just loud all the time? The flute is alot like Ravel, pure genius!

  • reminds me of sundays back in the day... when we would listen to hackett whilst coming down from the acid we had taken the night before. we did that a lot.

  • is this footage available on DVD anywhere?

  • you're thinking of Terry Oldfield IMike's brother)

  • the guy on the flute is his brother Terry

  • His brother JOHN playing flute...

  • John?

  • I'm pretty certain his brother is named John.

  • Why pay to visit rural Russia?....Just put this on loud, turn off light the and your there.......

  • steve looks like William Fichtner and the flute guy looks jewish...heheheheh

  • Comment removed

  • I had never seen Steve playing a Stratocaster...

  • This is awesome! Thanks for this....

  • una y otra vez

  • theres a lil riff th sounds like fly on a windshield listen carefully

  • cuz they both use a kind of phyrgian mode

  • Yes you're right . . nice one!

  • True

  • Cousin John, your drumming has always amazed me.

  • A creative genius

  • Until he dies

  • Who ?

  • as a half a**ed guitar and bass player every time i see steve play i feel like smashing my guitars to pieces because if i practiced every day minute for the rest of my life i couldn't touch his talent-Is he still touring?

  • Steve, you are the best guitarrist in my life!!!! Thank you

  • We play Hackett 24/7 listen in!

  • Thanks, I really apreciate it. Peace!!!

  • oh man, that intro just sets this song up for something of sheer brilliance. Hackett is a master, he made the wise choice of leaving Genesis.

  • @Oceansandblue Y ES!!! SO TRUE

  • ... John Hackett on Flute ...

  • Great song!!! Always reminded me of Pink Floyd a bit. This song should have been on a movie soundtrack.....I enjoyed this live rendition of it- not only was Steve good, but the drummer was good too!- and so was the dry ice!....For those trivia buffs like me, that song is from 1980 off of Steve's 4th solo album, "Defector".

  • For the young aspiring Hackett fans like me... compared to Spectral Mornings and Voyage of the Acolyte, is Defector any good? If this song is any indication, I'll buy it straight away!

  • Defector is a great album, I also highly recommend Please Don't Touch. Quirky but excellent. Typical Hackett.

  • Wow, does that bring back memories! I saw this tour when he played Park West in Chicago. Amazing show. Totally inspiring. I still think this was his best backup band. I brought in my 35 mm camera (no one said anything) and still have all the great pics. Thank you for posting this. Hey, maybe now that YTube has HD we can get better quality videos of these??

  • Did the camera person forget whose band it was? Sorry, it's the John Hackett band...

  • Stunning musician have seen him live many times, not appreciated enough in my books

  • Too right!

  • Most simple theme (it seems).

    Brilliant song.

    Still goosebumps after thirty years.

This song is always with my family as we named our cat after this one: Steppes.

Eacht step she takes the song is in our minds.

Cats are as mysterious as the song.

    But also nice and friendly.

    Unearthly ....

    Man......

  • Love Hackett's solo stuff. The images he seems to have had in his head are so dark, I just love it! This tune has always had a real 'Lord of the Rings' feel to me. Met him once when a friend was putting on some of his acoustic shows, but I was too shy to say anything! Doh!!!

  • I was there in Montreux and was practically right behind the front cameraman. Steve gave me a smile precisely on this song as he could see how estatic I was during this rendition of probably his most amazing tune!

    Roger Salem

  • @deegish AHH YOU LUCKY ONE!!!!!

  • It is just too bad Hackett and the rest of the Genesis could not of kept going writing music into the 80's. I could only wonder what it would of turned out like. Well, this would give a bit of an idea I suppose because there is much Genesis left in him here and in the rest of the band. Balancing commercial and artistic success would of been one of the challenges. Current Genesis is satisfied with Commercial and Steve is a purist and gets off on artistic success. Hmmmm could of been interesting.

  • Great stuff. Very reminiscent of Terje Rypdal's music.

  • I agree. Two greats musicians...

  • Totally agree as well. Two of my favorite guitarists.

  • I saw this band in 1980. It's still one of the greatest concerts of my life. An awesomely tight band. Nick Magnus on Keys, John Shearer on drums made our hearts pound (he threw his sticks into the crowd at the end), Chas Cronk of the Strawbs on bass (though it might be Dick Cadbury on this vid), brother John on flute and of course Steve's magic Guitar. He had an Optigan on stage and they did "Sentimental Instituion." I had to go to the restroom at one point. The whole building was shaking!

  • O'Keeffe center in 79,massey hall 1981, El mo combo 94. three rocking shows i wont forget

  • Can't watch this enough!! Awesome...

  • Steve Hackett: A picture of integrity, modesty, skill and musical taste. You can't beat that.

  • Steve Hackett is the most musical guitarist I've ever heard. There's no one else like him.

  • whos the bass palyer on this track....so bloodt cool!!! One of thr best bass lines ever!

  • John Wetton?

  • Dik Cadbury ..singing as well in other tracks...great though underused voice..

  • The drummer is terry bozzio is he?

  • They had afest here in Dubai and had blokes from the Bee Gees and david gay - their arguement is that jazz is a state of mind - but i reckon - its bums on seats - fill em up and flog the tickets - should all be free that stuff anyway

  • Saw this tour at Pompey guidhall - not bad and not heard about any Hackett solo material and thought it since - not bad - not sure if I would call it jazz though

  • There are videos of jethro Tull playing at a jazz festival on youtube somewhere, and while they are playing some of their earlier, more jazzy/bluesy stuff, most of it is hardly what I;'d call jazz either.

Maybe they have their own wierd ways of defining these things ;)

  • Is that Hackett's brother on the flute?

  • Yep

  • He's feeling it almost as much as Sir Steve!

  • Majestic, stately, dignified and bad-ass

  • Excelente video y canción, es una de mis favoritas de Hackett, sólo misica original, esta bien chingona!

  • vivalarocka, I visited a journalists symposium 2 days ago and the main agenda was the state female journalism in the UK, after several hours of heated discussions I asked a main question and the answer was, Bloody Hackett's --- from 3,000 poeple.

So I guess that means SH is way ahead now!

  • mmaaaooooooo that taurus pedal is so fuckin sick

  • Master.

  • So everybody:-

    Hackett or Howe?

    Score so far: Hackett - 1 / Howe - 0

And please no abusive comments, its just for fun, and keep the score rolling.

  • Score so far: Hackett - 2 / Howe - 0

  • Gotta give it to the Howe. He's just more technically advanced...but when you get two awesome guitarists together and no one cares who's better(unless you come out with GTR *sigh*).

  • So that would now be: Hackett - 3 / Howe - 0

However I still like When the heart rules the mind by GTR.

  • Trower ;P

Hmm, nah, I'd probably have to say

    Hackett -3/Howe -2 (including th bstensland's vote)

Maybe it's just the songs that they go with, but I prefer the energy and vibrance of his playing, and I'm really not sure about some of Hackett's more experimental playing. Doesn;t stop his solos Genesis being absolutely incredible though.

  • I like Steve Hackett's solo stuff better than I like Howes.

  • Hackett 3 Howe 22 (My 21 prog rock friends asked me to cast their votes with mine) Sorry! I guess is Howe all the way!! :P

  • vivalarocka, very good but unfortunately you have not read the small print which states:-

    One person, one vote.

By any chance do you come from Florida?

  • No, from NYC. But where is my comment? That was totally undemocratic, almost fascist...!!

  • vivalarocka, don't know about your comment, its not my video?

  • Hackett for me.

  • this is art

  • STEVE HACKETT thakns for this music....im very hard fan of this great talent and creativity guitar player....defector and spectral morning era its fantastic

  • you should listen "to watch the storms" it's amazing!

  • i didnt know there was video for this

ive been listening to this for years

    thats an awesome performance there

    bravo!!

    5 stars!

  • Good to be alive!!!!!!!! (And have ears)

  • And can you imagine that they(the so called genesis) reply to Steve´s ideas with cold silence after the "wind and wuthering" record. No wonder Steve did not show up for the next record.

Genesis "..and then there were abba".

  • PWahahah!!!

  • Steve is such a wonderful guitarist. I can't understand why his ideas were put on ice. Wind And Wuthering was a masterpiece. I'm fortunate to being able to play Blood On The Rooftops and every time I play it, I'm amazed at how beautiful it is. Hackett is a genius.

  • Very Ha! Ha! I use to call the era after SH left Genesis as "Singalong with Phil" named after the popular saturday night bland musak TV show.

  • @thomwick so TRUE!!!!!!!

  • The 2 guys who influenced Genesis the most(in positive ways) were Mr. Hackett and Anthony Phillips before him. It was amazing that they could lose one great guitarist and then get another one who is as equally talented. They have both done alot of brilliant work as solo artists as well. I would love to see them do something together. How great would that be, eh?

  • @SFCBenny57 they did a few tracks together on steves new album... Anthony phillips plays 12 string on 'emerald and ash' awesome :)

  • Genesis was never the same after Steve Hackett left. This is my favorite Hackett tune. Great melody and sound. Cheers the the mighty Hackett!

  • As a dream....

  • HACKETT IS THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER ALONG WITH tommi iommi.

  • love the RAVEL sounding melody, he is so tasteful in his playing!

  • only got into hackett about a year ago when a mate played me Spectral Mornings. love this bloke so much, not flashy, not showy, not all squeeling guitars and stuff. doenst let his ego get the better of the music.

  • Phenomenal - I've always loved this cut.

Thank you so much for posting!!

  • This has been one of my longtime favorites of Hackett's, and in my opinion, this is one of the best performances of the song. I liked the Tokyo tapes version a lot, but everyone clicks on this one.

    Flawless!! Thanks for the post.

  • Thanks for posting - nice to see Hackett get some well deserved exposure on youtube. I agree that his departure affected Genesis's sound WAY more than Gabriel's did, yet he never seems to get any credit....

  • Just look at the Genesis forum solo members threads, Hackett has tons of posts!

  • nice... saw him in 1980 on this tour I believe at the old Agora Ballrom, in Atlanta

  • this blows away anything that genesis have put out since he left the band

  • there's more music in any given hackett song than in most bands' careers.

  • I should post a vid of this, but my cam only takes vids 3 minutes long XD. Gotta get a video camera...Great video, especially the fact that he's usin a Strat, and not a Les Paul or Fernandez!

  • a true master at work. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Steve Hackett on a stratocaster???

  • Steve Hackett Kiks ass with or without Genesis!!!

This is real class Progressive Rock. Get Educated everyone!!!! Foxtronix Ink Washington State USA

  • Damn right! Actually after Gabriel's departure Genesis music was still great just because of his playing and writing music. His music is better than all Gabriel. Collins, Mike and the Mechanics and Tony Banks' albums together.

  • That was fuckin funny, the way he looked into the camera and just smirked. As if he were saying "you like what I am doing?" hahaha

  • Steve reminds me of Body from the professionals

  • @skintrade ....or could that have been Bodie?

  • Montreux? France or Canada?

  • switzerland

  • I like the whammy-tap!

  • I've spent so much of my life being unable to watch my guitar hero in action. Youtube has been *awesome*!

  • The man is amazing!
