it's not about being "good" but that Alan is also a prolific composer, arranger, and has a completely unique style that is impossible to imitate. Who even comes close to what he does? It's how he thinks about music that sets him apart from the herd, that and his humilty despite being on top of the pyramid.
honestly, allan has to be the greatest guitarist of all time, and ok alot of people are gonna say can he play a funk song as good as wah wah watson, or a blues tune as good as albert king, maybe not, but what hes doing here, in this genre, on his albums, are sooo above anyones playing its not even funny, and the fact that he is able to play like coltrane on the guitar puts him at #1 in my book, i cant grasp what hes playing 99 percent of the time, and neither can any professional guitarist
Allan was right in the pocket (of course); The bassist didn't seem to really get the feel of the solo until around half way through - Extremely talented dude still and all.
@Listendudeok oh yeah. Hey buddy, I have some liquid gold which everyone else will try to convince you is just plain water because they can't see properly - wanna buy some?
man i love all music and ive tried for six years to get into this guy but impossible ,abe after my lombotomy next month i'll finally be able to give it the respect it derserves.....who knows though acid elevtor music is the absolute worst period.love jass but this is crap..talented man even though he has hearing and possiblly brain damage
@ExtremeBogom See? Ha. I did mean to be arrogant, it's not that serious, I was merely expressing my devotion towards this exceptional musician. So we seem to agree he is special.
I know that Masvidal is a massive Holdsworth fan. No offense to the brilliant Cynic and fantastic Masvidal, but you can see who the student is and who the teacher is in that respect, lol. To be fair, nobody comes close to Holdsworth.
Dave Carpenter = great loss.....i've never heard another bass player comp and keep the bass line going at the same time, whilst playing tastefully and incredible note choices...just a superb player he was
I'm a bit late discovering this rhythm section extraordinaire of Novak and Carpenter, and that because of Holdsworth. Geeze, to discover Carpenter too late. What a loss! And what a talent! He's right there with AH!!
i think when musicians reach the level that these six players that you're comparing are at, no one's 'better' than someone else anymore. everyone just has their own unique sound, and some people like one sound more than another.
@jakehawthorn ... no, it´s surely dave carpenter .. he played there in that year .... jimmy johnson and gary novak were playin´ together with mike landau in 2007 ... gary is always behind the kit with mike, from 2008 was chaney there and now andy hess . ... know that gary told he loved dave carpenter, they made a record together: sondogs - floydian slip ... acoustic jazz combo with deron johnson on organ ... and dave on upright bass ... recorded few months before his heart attack in 2008 ...
MANNn gary novack is ONE of the greatest drummers of this era and he is so forgoten for everybody.. he is blazing skills.. you should check chick corea eletrick band II- Paint the world album and chirk corea quartet-time warp... gary is playing amazing in those albums.. happy grooves...
Totally diabolical, like the marque. I was given an Alan Holdsworth Carvin by a friend. Just now discovering this amazing guitarist. I'm still living up to the instrument!
yep, Novak is an absolute MF'er. keeps it smooth and swinging and tasty but slips in those blistering fills. Chops galore in the drum solo.
but I noticed how the director of the video is not showing Holdsworth as he wraps up his solo and is playing the most absurd lines ever. WTF! stop cutting to shots all over the stage and focus on the soloist. buy a seat on the clue train... jazz folks do have an attention span... ( regardless of rumors...) :-)
Allan se volvió loco, está fuera de la esfera terrestre. Toca como si las manos hubieran dejado de ser manos para quién sabe qué ser. Es fantástico, sin palabras. Marcos Acosta
It's sacreligious to say so, but Gary Novak is the warmest, most-thoughtful and tasteful drummer that Holdsworth has ever hired. His drum solo in this tune is a study unto itself. The chord shapes in the head are pretty easy. The comping he does in the rest of the tune...still working on it!
NotYourTypicalNegro 3 years ago
the beginning of those chords starts not on the one and not on the two but slightly late. When you play it straight just doesn't sound right.
stargate669 3 years ago
if you want to know the chord shapes check out reaching for the uncommon chord by Allan Holdsworth. Great transcriptions focusing on Allan's chords.
stargate669 3 years ago
He dose alot of Inversions
these chords aren't strange at all its just people never heard them arrange in such away
take simple chords and try to arrange in different order these are called "Inversions"
so a C chord is CEG what if you arrange it to GEC? it possibility are endless
so imagen stuff like 13ths chords and so on
GEBDF# you can get pretty crazy with the stuff
