This video was uploaded like 4 years ago. I've just started learning Japanese, so maybe I don't have a right to say anything... but what's with all the hate, for so long! PS I'm from California, can you tell?
why are people upping this idiot? is this some sort of in-joke? based on the collective intelligence of youtube users, i doubt it.
at any rate, where the hell did you learn ふいんき for 雰囲気? that's a rather non-standard pronunciation. ふんいき is right. did you learn japanese from WWWJDIC and think you're an expert now?
by the way, it's actually NOT pronounced EEEEYYYYgo (like the fonz). yes, "ei" is a long vowel, but it is not a dipthong per se. koichiben's pronunciation is perfect.
@dongbangwater Indeed, I have always heard it pronounced as ふいんき, which is why when I heard him say ふんいき it kinda jarred in my head a bit. Of course, it could also be a dialect thing. I don't know, I have yet to visit Japan. As for 英語, I always just tried to play it safe and pronounce each kana separately and of equal duration for each. I try not to base my pronunciation off of English words/sounds, because it's simply not English and saying stuff like "eyy" or "ei" just over complicates it imo.
@dongbangwater you sound like an intelligent person... almost. You obviously never spent any time in Japan or you would be aware of the very normal usage of the pronounciation of ふいんき, yes, the correct written way is ふんいき but Koichi is pronouncing it ふにき, big difference Mr. Dong or are you too smart to hear the subtle nuance? And to say that Koichiben's pronounciation is 'perfect' further solidifies my 'opinion' of you. You're probably totally cool with his アメリカから見た日本のステレオタイプ. Good day sir...
@fenstratful shut the fuck up you condescending weeaboo prick. guaranteed you aren't even japanese. he is not saying "funiki," he is saying FUN(g)iki. the way you are supposed to say the fucking word. if you can't even hear the difference between a nasal ん and "ni" then you really are not in a position to be telling japanese people how they should speak their own damn language.
PS not a mister, and fuck yourself in the ass with your pompous, pseudo-intellectual "good day sir" shit.
He is saying that, in Japan there are giant Eggo Waffles that terrorize small villages and eat all the native-speaking gaijin English teachers. There are no native speakers around to correct people's mistakes trying to learn english, so they learn instead 「英語」(pronounced eigo), which is a bastardized version of English spoken by the Eggo waffle monsters.
i dont understand much Japanese but he seems angry over something stationary like positioning. people love anime more in Japan and sometimes the "pacific" are just not as impressive as there euro-asia counterparts its very sad but english is needed so we can baby fat americans
@crown3388 He is angry at the Japanese standardized examination system and the weird English that Japanese people speak and he says that the problem isn't the teacher, but the exam system itself. And those of you that are complaining about 雰囲気whether its ふんいき、ふにき、or ふにぎ it just depends on the region of where the Japanese person is from. ふんいき is standard Japanese. If you want to know more about regional differences, read やさしい日本語のしくみ. It's all in Japanese but it's in easy Japanese.
@samboleh He says today is a まじ (slang for serious) topic, but that he's angry (怒っている). He lets us into a secret that the English that's been taught from elementary school onwards isn't true English (しれは本当の英語じゃない), but strange English (変な英語), fit only for passing entrance exams. (I think he's exaggerating for comic effect). He goes on to blame the exam system, not the teachers 先生, and the lack of listening and speaking practise. He says some teachers have good pronounciation 発音, but many don't.
@zxcv0mnb Typo: しれ->それ. He says it's important to be able to speak English (英語を話す). He says in America, there are lots of otaku, who watch too much anime but who know little Japanese beyond the notorious "kawaii ^_^;;". His last point is that studying Japanese in a choice in America, but in Japan some who don't especially like English but who have to study it for exams. If you like English, then, fine, but if not it's hard. As a result of these things, Japanese lessons in USA are more useful.
It's funny how in like 40% (at least of your older vids), you find a way to bash ppl who "learn" only with anime XD. Did you have a bad experience with an overly obsessive Naruto fan??? lol
Koichi, I started following some of your work a couple of years ago and finally studies for sixth months in Japan, starting in October of 2010. I understood practically everything you said in this video, as a result ( the humor too ). I gotta recommend to everyone just once more; STUDY ABROAD.
odd commentary, not sure he knows what he's talking about, spoken Japanese seems out of whack, usage of Japanese vocabulary not up to par. English taught in Japanese classrooms by non native English speakers is lacking in substance but it's better than nothing at all.
"Eggo"... a frozen homestyle waffle product made by Kellogg's.
And what the hell is "funiki"??? You've said in a few of your postings. Are you trying to say ふいんきbecause it's pronounced fu in ki not fu ni ki. Dude, I'm helping you and you probably don't even realize it. You're still the best damn dork ass train wreck this side of the Pacific.
@fenstratful You're wrong. ふいんきis being used by a lot of Japanese people nowadays, but the proper Japanese word is 雰囲気(ふんいき)。If you're going to correct someone actually be sure you're correct yourself.
@PattMyCat little miss know-it-all it's obvious you're not Japanese or you wouldn't have bothered wasting my time, probably learned it on-line. I was born and raised there as were my parents and their parents, etc. What's your excuse? All my family and friends pronounce it ふいんきever since I can remember so what's up with this "nowadays" bullcrap... did you read that on-line too? Japanese from Nagoya on up to Wakkanai may be apt to pronounce it ふんいき but I have yet to hear it pronounced ふにき.
@fenstratful i always thought is was pronounced "ふい んき" too. I'm from the Kobe area, large international community there and thats how we pronouce it; not "フニキ". check out jisho.org.
@fenstratful No, I learnt it when I learnt those kanji during my year's exchange there, it's not a good idea to make assumptions based on nothing, you'll probably get it wrong. I'm not Japanese but I don't see what that has to do anything, the kanji for the word is read ふんいき (yes it's not ふにき, but I never wrote that) so he's not incorrect in pronouncing it that way.
I never said it was natural-sounding, just that it isn't incorrect.
@PattMyCat Yeah, I know you never said fu ni ki but by saying I was wrong you were also saying my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends were wrong, but let's not fret over it. Peace out sis'
@fenstratful Yes, I never said his Japanese was perfect. Feel free to criticise him but at least criticise the things he actually got wrong. There's no need to be all defensive, it's a language not a secret club.
@PattMyCat You're right. I admire your astuteness. By virtue of just 'studying' will make you and Koichi a much better person. Constructive critisism usually makes a person better and stronger. But wouldn't you agree that Koichi used the word ふんいきout of context?
@anime8explode uh... i knew that, why because i'm fluent in the language my anime8explode friend, but Kojiki... i mean Koichi said "Eggo" or dost mine ears deceive me???
@fenstratful Criticism is good but you don't have to outright bash the guy. It doesn't matter if you were born in Japan. You have no right to insult someone who not only put in their time and effort to learn one of the most difficult languages for a native English-speaker to learn, but who also tries to share what he knows with both sides of the world. At least comment about the subject pertaining to the video. If you have a problem with his speaking, just be mature about it and PM the guy.
What a big mouth you've got!! あなたの言いたいこと理解できますが、あなたの日本語の発音悪いですね(笑) 私は英語の帝国主義は嫌いです。事実上、英語が国際語になっているから、道具としての英語を学ぶ必要もあることは認めます。Let me take this opprtunity to give you some of what I belive in with respect to English learning. I belive in giving my English.言語はその国の民族の魂であり歴史です。外国語を学んで無国籍になる人がいます。言語は、その人の考え方、思想を支配します。英語はあくまで外国人と意思疎通するための道具です。
1. The English taught at Japanese schools is "strange," and not real English. (i.e. bad pronunciation, weird grammar, etc.)
2. A few English teachers have good pronunciation, but many of them do not.
3. English teachers in Japan are usually Japanese people, while almost all Japanese teachers in America are Japanese people, therefore their pronunciation is perfect.
As an American, I believe that in order to be successful in international business it is important to learn about the culture of the people you are doing business with and also it is important to speak the language fluently so no misunderstandings occur.
i'm from germany and spent five months at a senior high school in saitama.
i totally loved it, but the english lessons were a waste of time.
it's like koichiben says in the video and one can read in the comments, i don't want to bore you and repeat it, but i think the japanese government and the teachers really have to improve the english lessons.
does anyone know what they are doing to improve the situation?
i used to have a really good teacher, i learned a lot and the lessons where fun. but last schoolyear my class had a teacher who wasn't able to pronounce english properly and so the lessons sucked.
but all in all, you get to learn some basic skills in communication and reading books and so on and we are all able to understand and speak english enough to get along.
@tlcfreak2510 Yes. So you can realise the method of learning is a memorisation run instead of critical thinking, as critical thinking is not bad how the 'biased' seem it to be. Should you deter advocacy for American spelling and orthography.
Yeah, what you're saying is so true!! I am a Japanese and came to L.A. when I was 18 years old. I couldn't communicate to people in English when I just got here even though I used to get good grades in English courses when I was in Japan.
My friend in Fukuoka said to me once that the reason why the signs in English are so bad in Japan is the Japanese have too much pride and won't ask for help. That was kind of funny to hear, but judging by the look on her face, I think she was being serious. I think. :o
I agree that American English is not "wrong". But I will not go so far as to say that it represents what the language originally looks like. As you have said when the language passed into the US it changed over time. As a result a learner of "standard" English may find it difficult to understand certain American sentence patterns or phrases.
haha, how do you know all that you are talking about here? yeah, seriously the enlgish classes in schools are such a waste of time and effort. its a pity, a real pity.
Well what can I say it's good for the world to have an international language. English just happens to be it even though english is one of the most inconsistent languages ever, it's still good for everyone to know it, after all language is just a tool for communication.
i wish I could go to japan for school, i am a californian and cant even speak any other language besides english and some spanish, i wish you could say what is wrong with the program in english in this video. I would like to know.
I think it was something along the lines of English teachers in Japan have never left Japan, and so never corrected their faulty pronunciation and things.
get the fucking reality. who buy Japs shits nowadays.. only consumed by some ignorant European or American or Japanese Korea electronic wins over Japan.. that is to be definetly ture.. why? read the newspapers.. Japan only win over Korea in Game player, camera, Car, note book, thats all other areas, you are lossing every grip. haha.. seriously.

i'm from germany and spent five months at a senior high school in saitama.
i totally loved it, but the english lessons were a waste of time.
it's like koichiben says in the video and one can read in the comments, i don't want to bore you and repeat it, but i think the japanese government and the teachers really have to improve the english lessons.
does anyone know what they are doing to improve the situation?
tlcfreak2510 1 year ago
@tlcfreak2510 How are the English programmes in German institutions?
SlimeTron5000 1 year ago
@SlimeTron5000
it depends on the teacher, actually.
i used to have a really good teacher, i learned a lot and the lessons where fun. but last schoolyear my class had a teacher who wasn't able to pronounce english properly and so the lessons sucked.
but all in all, you get to learn some basic skills in communication and reading books and so on and we are all able to understand and speak english enough to get along.
i hope i answered your question properly.
tlcfreak2510 1 year ago
@tlcfreak2510 Yes. So you can realise the method of learning is a memorisation run instead of critical thinking, as critical thinking is not bad how the 'biased' seem it to be. Should you deter advocacy for American spelling and orthography.

AmbreEyes1 1 year ago 5
windylea 7 months ago
@windylea
お返事ありがとうございます。州によって違うんですね。アメリカは広いです。まあ、移民が多いアメリカなら、一世を通訳にすれば問題は無いでしょう。国連は通常、三カ国語以上話せる事を条件に人材採用をしますが、アメリカ人だけは英語しか出来ない人が多いと聞きました。世界共通言語は英語なので、世界中何処でも不便が無いからでしょう。

My friend in Fukuoka said to me once that the reason why the signs in English are so bad in Japan is the Japanese have too much pride and won't ask for help. That was kind of funny to hear, but judging by the look on her face, I think she was being serious. I think. :o

学校で叩き込まれる英語は科目としての英語です。6年間実際には使いものにならない英語を偏差値の差を作るために勉強するのです。自分も海外にずっといたのでわかるのですが、このせいで日本人=英語苦手と称されがちなんだからたまりません

今授業はReadingとWritingやってるけど読みはある程度出来るけど書きは試験用だし、会話なんて一年時にちょろっとやったきりで自分でもやろうとしないから駄目駄目。
それに学校で習ってる英語って何か実際外国人に対して使う時どーなんだ?って心配に思っちゃったりする;

I agree that American English is not "wrong". But I will not go so far as to say that it represents what the language originally looks like. As you have said when the language passed into the US it changed over time. As a result a learner of "standard" English may find it difficult to understand certain American sentence patterns or phrases.

世界中で有名な科学技術や学術論文は英語で書かれています。
日本人がその世界で、通用し産業で生き残る為には、英語で、論文の読解し学び、英語で論文を書かなければならないということです。
つまり、会話を主としていなかったという背景があったわけです。
従って、英語を読める、少しは書けるけど、会話が出来ない日本人が多いわけです。
kumashop 2 years ago
