@GrandAmGT1990 two stroke engines including detroit 2 strokes make all of their power in the top end or high rpm range. You don't hit the power band until around 1750rpm
It was one with a lowbay trailer use to pass my house everyday sounded just like that it was red everything on it was red and the last time I saw it it was for sale the trailer with a cat on it
my boss has a old pete with a 2 stroke detroit and we haul 25 tons of wheat seed at 55 to 60 mph no trouble at all even on the hills we lose like no speed...and the cat in our other seed truck loses speed in the hills
LOL 2 strokes are only good for sound.. 4 strokes diesel are WAY better because they have an complete stroke only for intake so the sweeping of exhaust gazes is perfect and with the need of ''windows'' for 2 strokes engines they need a longer piston so they have a tinner combustion chamber than 4 strokes... 4 strokes are way better because they produce WAY more torque and they produce all they power at lower speed so less wearing...
I never get tired of hearing this truck and seeing your videos. Nothings tougher than an old Binder and nothing sounds better than a good old screaming detroit.
i love the truck but, are you guys a wholesale building supply distrubtors or just a lumber yard because thats alot of lumber to deliver to one or two job sites. and if it is, did you dump the load?
got dam that truck's slow as fuck....but thats why its da shit! Id love to drive this beast with that load. Nothin sounds better than shifting a slow ass, fully loaded truck and hearing that ole Detroit work. Makes driving a truck fun!
Hey Hotrod, can you tell Me more about the Detroit split manifold You mentioned in this ideo clip? Was this an after market application? I wouldn't think it would be a home made thing like I did on my 48 chevy in 1956. Any thing you can tell me will be most appreciated.
nope, sorry buddy, twice the cylinders means twice the powerstoke.....there's 4 strokes: exhaust, compression. intake and powerstroke; twostroke engines only have two strokes:combustion andintake(simultaneously), and compression and exhaust(also simultaneously).
Meant that, in these engines, each cylinder produces power in every rev. So produces more power..
There is only one handicup for these engines : Air viscosity.. So the engine speed is limited by sweeping of exhaust gases by forced air intake. So these engines cannot exceed 1700-1800 rpms at cruise. (Even though with high pressure yields by big turbos that may reach only 2000'ish :D )
sounds good my dad used to drive something that sounbed like that he take it home once in awhile and have lunch loved it how high of rpm does that rev sounds like in the 3 to 4 thousand area for a truck
Woah... that sounded more like 9000 RPM than 2100! Well, 2 stroke engines burn fuel twice as fast as 4 strokes do, so they sound like there runnin faster.
sweet looking old binder.Eventually i'll get mine dressed up,just a little hard on the wallet to do it all at once.thanks for posting this ,and please keep more coming.
That it does. But it's a 6-71 governed to 2600 rpm's. I know it doesn't have that familiar throaty 6-71 sound that a 1950's-era GM bus or many other trucks had. It's just governed higher and has unusually noisy (for a 6-71) straight-cut blower gears, which should explain the similarity to the 6V-53.
That exhast is probably custom. Many trucks of today have dual exhausts even though they all have straight-6 engines. It helps the engine breathe easier.
Where abouts is this in Ontario? Wait till they cut back the weights for tri-axle set ups like that and you will wish you put a steering axle on it instead of the regular lift axle setup, lol.
To get another idea as to what the 6-71 in this particular truck should sound like, type in "1979 GMC Brigadier." The main title of the video is "Shifting a 6-71."
It is a 671N still limited to 2100 rpm. The exhaust has been "slightly" reworked ... (grin). More mods to come! Keep watching as they will get done as soon as our work schedule allows some down time for the old girl.
when do we get a in cab video of this truck . your guys did a good job putting this truck together. im glad to see a fleet star still earning its keep
I have tried several in cabs ... seems like a cell phone rings or a car pulls out or "someone" starts cursin or ... I will keep attempting to put something together.
Actually that is a 6-71 governed to 2600 RPM. One of our neighboring fire companies had a 1969 Seagrave rear-mount ladder truck with this same style engine but louder and an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. Another fire comapny near us had a 1969 American LaFrance pump with the same high-revving 6-71 also with an automatic transmission. Love that sound!! I also like 6V-53, too.
Whoever owns this truck ought to put it back to 2100 or 2300 rpm. You should watch/listen to 12V-71N in the Kenworth W900 (if you haven't already) to get an idea as to what this 6-71 SHOULD sound like.
According to International Trucks by Fred Crismon, the DD is listed (in the 1975 section of the book, the one year before this truck was built) as producing 228 hp @ 2,100 rpm and 653 lb/ft of torque @ 1,400 rpm.
Hmmmm, now I'm doubting myself that it's not a 6v53 because it sounds like a 71 series at lower rpms. I'm guessing the governed top rpm was turned way up, and it is a 6-71. Please tell us more about the engine....

With this payload, starts up faster than many contemporary four stroke trucks under 350hp

It doesnt sound like a 6-71 because its blowing out twin stacks. Sounds like two 3-71's because of that.

greeniron32 4 years ago
More power.
seagravefan 4 years ago
What horsepower is the 2600 rpm model? Most 6-71's were about 238 hp.
greeniron32 4 years ago
I don't know for sure but I think somewhere in the 250 HP range.
seagravefan 4 years ago

There was none. there was the
53 series 2900 RPM
71 series 2200 RPM
92 Series 1900 RPM
still doesn't sound like a 6-71. I'd classify it as an 8v53. That would give you higher RPMs and it would better explain the twin stacks.
