@DarthZane89 lol kid you need to fix up. Certain Hindus find cows to be sacred, and muslims find swine and pigs to be unclean and unfit for consumption or any other interaction with it, and they also dont find cows sacred either way.
@DarthZane89 no ist just that for muslims any sort of urine and unclean things should not be put on the body eaten or live close with dirty things, because jinns or demons live near dirty things.
Muslims defeated Armies that outnumbered them 20 times!!! The Mongols invaded whole Europe, and none of them could stop them, but when they entered middle-east, they were defeated many times, first time im ancient City of Arbil (Kurdistan) by Muslim Kurds. And later all Mongols became Muslim.
Meanwhile in the Middle east Arabs have a true military with EDUCATED commanders. Not a bunch a pale white retards swinging swords. Interesting I never heard of Viking Universities

@Blutstrupfs: I agree with u on the Vandals there. But the ones u call Vandals in the movie are called Wendol. @mattp9216 What gave me the right? A bunch of white people that created a thing called the Bill of Rights. Thats what gives me the right. FYI I am very well versed on American history and world history. And one thing that history teaches us is this. If you DONT want to be taken over learn how to fight and created advancements. The reason why anyone in the world is taken over is because their civilization was inferior to the other one. Facts dont lie, grow up, move on and stop being a victim
@cwood4ever u should be thankful this conversation isnt in person b/c i would be making you eat the dirt, candy ass bitch. learn how to fight HAAHA dont make me laugh a pussy like u dosnt have the right or the balls to look me in the eye and say what you did. your only big and bad if your siting in front of a computer screen. pathetic
@cwood4ever Acting like an ass isn't a right. That's also one of the dumbest historical arguments I've heard, and I've listened to Glenn Beck. There's no real way to gauge the superiority or inferiority of a civilization, since that would be subjective, and not objective. Not lacking technology doesn't make someone inferior, it makes them less-advanced. Poland and Germany were equitable in 'civilization' yet Germany still took over. France as well. Your conclusions are wrong.
@UNspacycadet I am write Poland was using Horse Calvary in WW2 you retard. Obviously you cant read a history book or you would know. In EVERY CENTURY the inferior cultures get raped by the superior ones. You can cry and call foul all day long but truth is truth. Go read The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, and The history of the Roman Empire, history of the British Empire. Once you read these email me and we can have an educated discussion on this. Until then silence fool.
@cwood4ever Using horse calvary doesn't make a civilization inferior. Technologically, yes, but as aforementioned, you can't objectively classify civilizations as superior or inferior. I'm a historian, and know about all of those events. Perhaps you forget that the Roman Empire fell to barbarian invaders (Goths, Visigoths, etc), or that Germany was technologically superior in many ways during WWII, but was still defeated. There is no such thing as an inferior culture.
Beowulf is quite another story, this movie is -very loosely-based on the account of Ahmed Ibn Fadlan, who actually lived and was an ambassador from the kalifate of Bagdad.
Beowulf is an epic Anglo-Saxon poem in the germanic stave form, telling of an honour-seeking prince called upon to fight Grendel, a monster made of all fears of man...ah, well, you should read it for yourself. It may be over 1300 years old, but very few stories as thrilling as Beowulf have ever been written
Far from it. Where Beowulf fights one monster at the time, this story shown great big bloody hoards of them at once, there is no dragon, no bestowment of kingship, must I continue?
There is a slight resemblance regarding the outline of the story told here, which bears some likeness to any Germanic tale, poem, saga or song, but thats were it ends.
Beowulf is, within Germanic literature, unique because of its profound storyline (s). Really, you should read a proper scholarly translation of it.
actually, the line of fire its interpreted as a fire snake, or dragon, the vendle are grendel, and at the end, bulfi, fights the female leader of the tribe of vendel, like beowulf fights the mother...
The movie is based on a book in which Michael Crichton attempted to bring Ahmad Ibn Fadlan's true story and the epic poem Beowulf together. The appendix of the book has the details of this.
I haven't watched this whole movie yet, but I've read the book.
actually its based on both the accounts of ahmed, and beowulf.......the story of ahmed its from the book eaters of death.....the director wanted to create a story of beowulf that wa realistic, so he mixed it with the chronicles of ahmed ibn fadlan
Michael Crichton himself stated that the book from which this is based, Eaters of the Dead, is his representation of a more thrilling Beowulf, after a colleague of his claimed the original epic poem was 'boring.'
He simply takes an unrealistic monster, and turns it into a plausible enemy that the reader is almost fooled into believing really exists.
Weren't Viking warriors already a bitch to kill without armor? So would putting them in plate armor enhance their battle abilities or hinder them since they are accustomed to light armor?
Also thanks for uploading the film man I loved this movie back in the day. I lost the tape recently and you don't see VCRs around these days so was at a lost.
@AltamontKiller So true. Many people blame all muslims for terrorist attacks, but those are only a few of a whole. I, for one, am glad to say I am not one of them
spain where dominated by the muslims for years but then some one named Rodrigo diaz they called him Mio Cid he camed from valencia an started to fight the arabs and managed to fre spain from the arabs and defeted them.
I don't agree ! Arabs left Spain in 1492 after the battle of Grenada, the Arab commander was Muhammad XII , the Spanish commanders were Isabella and Ferdinand.
yes cus the war took some years. But rodrigo diaz/Mio cid whas the one who started to fight back and made like a civilian war for ex. he whas like a symbol for the spanish ppls ofc he diead in battle but hes heroism thinking made spain keep on fighting until they managed free them self. cus spain whas neutral they didint do much resistance against the arabs. but mio cid changed that way of thinking.
He died with half the country loving him, and half the country hating him. Dont forget, Alfonso always dubbed him a traitor. Even after the battle for Valencia
The arabs had their Arses kicked by Charles martel the hammer in October, 732. 30 ,000 Christian Franks and some Germans destroyed 140,000 moslem saracens. thrus ending islamic notions of conquering Europe. Martel is truly one of the wests greatest heros and His name will always be remembered with respect among all free peoples.
Try reading history as opposed to revising it and letting your sectarian imagination do the rest! It's a much more honest approach to commentry. Its called the battle of Tours, the day all Mohammadians dirtied their underwear all over the world and decided to stay and make sand castles in their deserts instead of invading Europe.
why cant you just watch a GOD DAMN good movie like this and not write a SHIT COMMENTS? why???? just tell me? This is great story... about an Arab who came to Scandinavia... Culture meetings... and just for benefit of friendship between them... SO FUCK YOU all who is racist here... BECOUSE you dont belong to this movie
well honestly, Charles' victory did stopped the Arabs movement into Europe. It just shows that sheer number alone is not enough, that a good commander at the head + strategy are also factors in warfare. And Charles won the chess game, enough said.
Defeated the Arabs, then set up his own kingdom in valencia. He wasnt from Valencia, he was from Bivar/Vivar. The arabs wearnt truley defeated til the 1400's. The reconquista lasted 700 years. I did a paper measuring El Cids efforts to thwart Islam from Spain.
But it seems that your implying that he was the only spainiard to fight back. Some 300 years of war between christian and muslim had escalated before El Cid was born. Remember, that in 700, Muslims invaded, but settled. Cid's war was with a caliphate which wanted to dominate the way of life of both christians and muslims in spain. Besides, once the emirates were established in Cordoba etc - Most of the offensives were conducted by the Christian coalitions.
We must not forget that all these army's were defited by the Muslim army when controled by Khalid ibn Walid. The Persians, The Romans , all the world powers back than were defited!
Joint effort to be fair, Condado Portucale, Leon y Castille and Condado de Barcellona i.e Aragon. It was a whole 700 year struggle and they all did their part. Besides - many dont know that even the MUSILIMS defeated the muslims in the reconquista. Most of the "settled" muslims feared the upcoming invasion of the moor Tashfin.
this is just a movie, nothing real ! so why do people here argue about historical wars between muslims and chritians, even the movie talks about viking odinists not chritians !
Pyrrhic victory for the persians though. And nobody can be sure of the numbers, we are talking thousands of years here. Besides, '300' is an interpretation of a graphic novel based upon an exaggerated account written a significant amount of time after the battle. It's sheer entertainment, not history.
In the Battle of Thermopylae (as detailed almost entirely by Herodotus), which occurred in 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands
The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained losses disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war
The Battle of Salamis (Greek: Ναυμαχία τῆς Σαλαμῖνος), was a decisive naval battle between the Greek city-states and Persia in September, 480 BC in the strait between Piraeus and Salamis Island, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Athens
In the spring of 334 BC Philip's heir, Alexander the Great, who had himself been confirmed as Hegemon by the League of Corinth, invaded Asia Minor at the head of a combined Macedonian army and almost immediately faced and defeated a Persian force at the Battle of the Granicus. In 333 BC Darius himself took the field against the Macedonian king, but his much larger army was outflanked and defeated at the Battle of Issus and Darius was forced to flee, leaving behind his chariot,
Spartans and ancient Thai warriors, fighting side by side, against some great nameless terror. Each side combining their tactics to smash such a world-threatening dread.
Impossible to know, they never fought against each other. Only putting them to fight face to face we would know. They were all great warriors, so consider them tied or something.
That'll depend on the background. Spartans are skilled in shock tactics, protected by their shields and vicious foes with spears and short swords; Norsmen/Vikings have the element of marine warfare and can strike quickly and efficiently from the sea; as for Scots, I aint too sure..but I just know they got some badass swords. hehe
of course not on the movies. that's Hollywood stuff. But you still gotta admit that USING traditional Greek tactics (executed with Spartan precision) roughly 700 Greek soldiers kicked a Persian army of 250,000. that's gotta be worth something. as for Thais, well, Im not that well-researched, so no comment on them. Kinda like some of their moves tho.
The Thais were formidable. However, in the 1600s they were beaten by the Malaccan Sultanate in a combined land and sea battle on the west side of what we know now as Malaysia. Hence ending Siamese hegemony on the Peninsula. A later alliance with the Ming Dynasty cemented the Malaysian freedom.
Thanks posting the film...I have never felt the spirit of Dark Ages. It's a perfect composition of the Book "Risala" by Ibn Fahdlan and the wonderful myth of "Beowulf"...
Theres no movies like this nowadays. Too bad.

Facts dont lie, grow up, move on and stop being a victim
cwood4ever 1 year ago
@cwood4ever u should be thankful this conversation isnt in person b/c i would be making you eat the dirt, candy ass bitch. learn how to fight HAAHA dont make me laugh a pussy like u dosnt have the right or the balls to look me in the eye and say what you did. your only big and bad if your siting in front of a computer screen. pathetic
mattp9216 1 year ago
@cwood4ever Acting like an ass isn't a right. That's also one of the dumbest historical arguments I've heard, and I've listened to Glenn Beck. There's no real way to gauge the superiority or inferiority of a civilization, since that would be subjective, and not objective. Not lacking technology doesn't make someone inferior, it makes them less-advanced. Poland and Germany were equitable in 'civilization' yet Germany still took over. France as well. Your conclusions are wrong.
UNspacycadet 11 months ago
@UNspacycadet I am write Poland was using Horse Calvary in WW2 you retard. Obviously you cant read a history book or you would know. In EVERY CENTURY the inferior cultures get raped by the superior ones. You can cry and call foul all day long but truth is truth. Go read The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, and The history of the Roman Empire, history of the British Empire. Once you read these email me and we can have an educated discussion on this. Until then silence fool.
cwood4ever 11 months ago
@cwood4ever Using horse calvary doesn't make a civilization inferior. Technologically, yes, but as aforementioned, you can't objectively classify civilizations as superior or inferior. I'm a historian, and know about all of those events. Perhaps you forget that the Roman Empire fell to barbarian invaders (Goths, Visigoths, etc), or that Germany was technologically superior in many ways during WWII, but was still defeated. There is no such thing as an inferior culture.
UNspacycadet 11 months ago
@cwood4ever Also, it's quite hilarious you call me a "retard" and "fool" yet don't know the difference between "write" and "right."

this movie was based off of beowulf pretty much.
brandon1488 2 years ago
Beowulf is quite another story, this movie is -very loosely-based on the account of Ahmed Ibn Fadlan, who actually lived and was an ambassador from the kalifate of Bagdad.
Beowulf is an epic Anglo-Saxon poem in the germanic stave form, telling of an honour-seeking prince called upon to fight Grendel, a monster made of all fears of man...ah, well, you should read it for yourself. It may be over 1300 years old, but very few stories as thrilling as Beowulf have ever been written
MrTriggr 2 years ago
it has all the characters of beowulf
Aderemi111 2 years ago
Far from it. Where Beowulf fights one monster at the time, this story shown great big bloody hoards of them at once, there is no dragon, no bestowment of kingship, must I continue?
There is a slight resemblance regarding the outline of the story told here, which bears some likeness to any Germanic tale, poem, saga or song, but thats were it ends.
Beowulf is, within Germanic literature, unique because of its profound storyline (s). Really, you should read a proper scholarly translation of it.
MrTriggr 2 years ago
actually, the line of fire its interpreted as a fire snake, or dragon, the vendle are grendel, and at the end, bulfi, fights the female leader of the tribe of vendel, like beowulf fights the mother...

The movie is based on a book in which Michael Crichton attempted to bring Ahmad Ibn Fadlan's true story and the epic poem Beowulf together. The appendix of the book has the details of this.
I haven't watched this whole movie yet, but I've read the book.
ElvenInk 2 years ago
actually its based on both the accounts of ahmed, and beowulf.......the story of ahmed its from the book eaters of death.....the director wanted to create a story of beowulf that wa realistic, so he mixed it with the chronicles of ahmed ibn fadlan
elguerreromuisca 2 years ago
Michael Crichton himself stated that the book from which this is based, Eaters of the Dead, is his representation of a more thrilling Beowulf, after a colleague of his claimed the original epic poem was 'boring.'
He simply takes an unrealistic monster, and turns it into a plausible enemy that the reader is almost fooled into believing really exists.
HHOJ 2 years ago
It is in fact based on Beowulf also, Beowulfs name is said in a Norwegian accent. Though not fully word for word it does have a lot of Beowulf in it.

Its called the battle of Tours, the day all Mohammadians dirtied their underwear all over the world and decided to stay and make sand castles in their deserts instead of invading Europe.

well honestly, Charles' victory did stopped the Arabs movement into Europe.

MxTach 2 years ago
yes ofc he didint defet the arabs in one day it took years. as all old wars.
DonChilenito 2 years ago
But it seems that your implying that he was the only spainiard to fight back. Some 300 years of war between christian and muslim had escalated before El Cid was born. Remember, that in 700, Muslims invaded, but settled. Cid's war was with a caliphate which wanted to dominate the way of life of both christians and muslims in spain. Besides, once the emirates were established in Cordoba etc - Most of the offensives were conducted by the Christian coalitions.

Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands
revengeofcleveland 3 years ago
The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained losses disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war
revengeofcleveland 3 years ago
The Battle of Salamis (Greek: Ναυμαχία τῆς Σαλαμῖνος), was a decisive naval battle between the Greek city-states and Persia in September, 480 BC in the strait between Piraeus and Salamis Island, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Athens
revengeofcleveland 3 years ago

THAT type of movie I'd pay good money to see.

Impossible to know, they never fought against each other. Only putting them to fight face to face we would know. They were all great warriors, so consider them tied or something.
Wildcat277 4 years ago
That'll depend on the background. Spartans are skilled in shock tactics, protected by their shields and vicious foes with spears and short swords; Norsmen/Vikings have the element of marine warfare and can strike quickly and efficiently from the sea; as for Scots, I aint too sure..but I just know they got some badass swords. hehe
RavnDream 4 years ago
well, u gotta think about thais and spartans
are u talking about the ones in the movies, they're ridiculous
4 sure the movies are great, but no spartan was like this and those asain warriors werent like flying samurais
MortredMaul 4 years ago 2
of course not on the movies. that's Hollywood stuff.
RavnDream 4 years ago
The Thais were formidable. However, in the 1600s they were beaten by the Malaccan Sultanate in a combined land and sea battle on the west side of what we know now as Malaysia. Hence ending Siamese hegemony on the Peninsula. A later alliance with the Ming Dynasty cemented the Malaysian freedom.
