This is not a gory movie. Just scary. And the plot is good, the story behind the child ghost makes sense, and the acting is great. I bought the CD (new) online.
lmfao a few years ago in grade seven my art teacher told my class this story and she said it was based on a true story. i had no freakin idea it was a movie..
You see, this is the problem with today's horror films, they rely far too heavily on CGI to give us 'full-on,in your face' shocks! Pre-CGI film-makers had to rely on good quality acting, scripts and whatever special effects they could produce! Now the computer can do it all.CGI definitely has it's place,of course it does but not in the extreme! And George. C. Scott was a damn fine actor.
The Changeling is an outstanding horror masterpiece!!!! Don't watch this movie alone, it will scare the fucking hell out of you! This is how I think more horror films should be made, it's always more frightening when you leave things up to your imagination then just showing everything all of the time.
One of the best & genuinely chilling horror films you can experience. It will send chills up and down your spine and give your skin goosebumps. It makes gore fest flicks unsatisfactory by comparision. Don't be put off because it was made 30 years ago. The digital convertion is great as is the sound and will not be expensive to buy.
@MultiAylmer absolutely! Nothing like a good gorefix every so often. A little gore never hurt nobody, .. well, except for the victim on the screen. But just the same ...
Kara 1464: Point taken; but it's too bad the same line has been used in about 25 films and tv shows per year since 1968. Keep your ears open--you'll start hearing it all of the time.
@LionmaneElsie08 I kind of spoiled the atmosphere for my mum when we were watching it and the wheelchair chased Claire along the balcony to the stairs... oh god.. I was rolling about laughing
@kara1464 lol that bit is quite funny, she's like "John... I don't wanna go up there.......... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!! THERES A BLOODY WHEELCHAIR CHASING ME!" lol
@LionmaneElsie08 It's her face heh... she keeps looking back at the wheelchair(camera's behind the chair).. and she's horrified lol... oh god... I'm laughing now thinking about it and it's years since I saw it... need to see it again.
Loved the atmosphere of this movie ... like where the camera's going through the kitchen and then, just at the right moment, the fridge kicks in a noise... little things like that all through the movie....
@LionmaneElsie08 The camera's moving forward through the kitchen with the fridge against the wall to the left.... creepy background music and sounds... and just as it reaches to where the fridge is, the fridge's system kicks in. We should watch it again... I remember it making me jump first time round
@kara1464 my dad has it on DVD, you will probably find it on Amazon. You can normally find all kinds of old stuff on there, like I got a copy of Oddworld Abe's Oddysee! (and that's like ancient!)
The sound is quite bad on his DVD, very muffled. So if you get it be prepared to have to sound up really high! lol
Do you notice that when script writers don't know what to write next they ALWAYS, add a "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME??' to EVERY film. Keep watching; you'll see. We need new script writers--and new schools to teach them some new methods.
But that "What do you want from me?" call fits in with the moment. He'd confronted the Sentator and had failied... he gets back to the house and the doors slammed. He'd done all he can and could do no more... and so he shouts to the ghost.... it fits in perfectly... not a line thrown in because the scriptwriters had lost their way.
What do you want from me....Classic.creepy film....i once fell asleep watching this film ...unknown to me lying on remote woke up volume on full and the part with the sodding wheelchair chasing him down the stairs...and I was needing a clean pair of shorts may i say....
This is one of my all-time favorite "scary" movies. Add to that, the story is based on an actual account taking place during the late19th century in Denver Colorado. I saw this at the movies in 1980. The casting, cinematography, lighting, all so well done and it was creepy the way CREEPY should be! No gore, very little profanity, just a good scary movie.
I saw this is the movie theater with my sister and my mom when I was only 8 years old...I remember is scared the crap out of the 3 of us! What I wouldn't give to see it again!!!!
Actually the original changeling haunted house to which Russel Hunter rent, wasn't really look creepy at all,and besides it resides just along at the street,no tall trees,no tall pavements, it just there.I've seen it here in the haunted houses websites.
One thing that is obvious is that the makers of "The Others" closely watched this film for its spookiness. For example the grounds keeperes in both movies have the same name "Mr.Tuttle" and the seance scenes are similiar and eerie.
I Was a Kid When I Saw This Movie Back at 1980 Was Very Scary....Now Is This Particular Trailer Does'nt Show ...But if I Go A Place & I See A Empty Wheel Chair I Would Feel The Chills Just Thinking That Is Going 2 Move by A Ghost...lol. dont let this dated trailer fool you. this is without a doubt one of the scariest films ever made. there were scenes that had me terrified to the point of nausea. i highly recommend watching it with the lights off and ALONE.
One of the best spooky films I have ever seen. I saw this over twenty years ago for the first time; the whole film spooked me out of my chair. Today I still can not sit and watch the full film, even though I know whats coming. The ball he dropped in to the river, when it comes bouncing down the stairs as he gets indoors, thats a very creepy bit and makes my hair stand up on end. Theres one part I love the most, the Childs voice on the recording. Thats great.
Geez, I remember my dad took me to see this movie way back in 1980 when I was like eight years old. All this time I could only remember some of the scary parts but the name totally escaped me. Only now did I discover the name of this movie on wildaboutmovies (not spam) on the page for Angelina Jolie's unrelated 2008 movie "Changeling". Can you believe it took me 30 years to figure out the name of this movie? Un-freakin-believable! I thought this movie was good but the ad looks like shit. lol
@DocLock completely agree. Forget all those ridiculous slasher flicks this is a true gem of a movie and proves you do not need over the top special effects and a gore fest to scare the crap out of people. A very under rated film which deserved more recognition.
I first saw this movie in 1980 when it was released. I did'nt like it then,.. being that I was a little splatter-buff at the time,.. but now that my tastes are more expanded and refined, it's among my favorites!! I dare say, however, that I still do like a dumb gorefest every now and again.

Why can't Hollywood make films like this anymore? I don't mean just horror films, but films that are well acted, well written, and don't just target the 'lowest common denominator'.
This fantastic film still haunts me, found it on dvd a couple of years ago and although its a little less disturbing as it was when I was 15, its still absolutley rocks, George C scott ..one of the best screen actors ever
Excellent flick...I always compare every new ghost story to this one. It's the gold standard so far...haven't seen anything that even comes close. When I heard Jolie was doing "The Changeling" I thought maybe they were doing a remake, but alas, no go. Maybe a remake would be a bust anyway, better to leave well enough alone. A-1!
Yeah, the trailer makes it seem cheesy but seriously, this is one of the most disturbing, eerie, scary movies of all time... it is completely underrated and not many people have heard of it. But the acting is amazing, the house is just terrifying, the score is SO creepy. This remains to this day one of the 3 scary movies that actually scare me and make me afraid of the dark! This is a good ghost/haunted house film. What I find even better though and I fully recommend is 'The Haunting' (1963). It's a film that, literally, frightened Stephen King.
I just viewed 'the haunting'(1991)...s c a r y! But this is supposidly from true accounts that happened in 1985-'89. What's the story with the 1963 version(which I havn't seen?
one of my all-time favourite movies! The nice thing about this film is that they used no special effects--it was mostly camera angles and lighting that enhanced the "creepiness" of it. oh and for one of the previous posts: yes, part of it was filmed in Canada.
Excellent movie!! It brings something new and exciting to the table of thriller flicks. So many scary movies today are based on gore, and sex. *sighs, and rolls eyes*
George C. Scott is amazing, and you wont regret finding the time to check this movie out!
Pretty good little flick. More accurately, it's a 'spiritual mystery' rather than horror. George C. Scott co-stars with his real hottie wife Trish Van Devere.
I stand by my statement... I read from a very reliable source(though it eludes my memory which publication). I remember being very surprised to find that the house wasn't real but just a false front(house) and nothing but lumber holding it up. I believe the film was filmed in Canada, though. The pulication I read from may have been FANGORIA or the defunct TWILIGHT ZONE magazine. Don't quote me on this.
A false front construction was made in Vancouver for the final fire scene but it was based on a real house in Toronto's Erindale Estates, where many of the exteriors and interiors were shot. Strangely, the Toronto house that was the model burned to the ground, as well, in the early 90's when I was living in one of the coach houses in the neighbourhood. No cause was found for the fire and it is still listed as suspicious.
I dont think they filmed the movie in Toronto, but they did shoot parts of it in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada...Although there are houses like this in Toronto..
This is not a gory movie. Just scary. And the plot is good, the story behind the child ghost makes sense, and the acting is great. I bought the CD (new) online.

There's a movie with the same name now and it has abso-tively no relation to this original movie :)
Just like with "Running Scared" of the 80s, there's a movie with the same title and again, no relation to the 80s version. wtf?

You don't see a lot of movies like this anymore. Now it's all special-effetcts, but then it was light/dark, sound effects, and the acting.
I think "The Ring" was based in part on this. The part where the body is found in the old well, for instance.

what ever it's excellent!!!!!

One of the best pure ghost stories ever filmed. The bouncing ball sequence is possibly my favourite ever for the genre.
Very influential movie, too. Most obviously in the form of What Lies Beneath, and also The Ring.
Bloody awful trailer here, though. Makes it sound cheap and corny.

This is a good ghost/haunted house film. What I find even better though and I fully recommend is 'The Haunting' (1963). It's a film that, literally, frightened Stephen King.
spiritualCAPTAIN1 3 years ago 2
I just viewed 'the haunting'(1991)...s c a r y! But this is supposidly from true accounts that happened in 1985-'89. What's the story with the 1963 version(which I havn't seen?

one of my all-time favourite movies! The nice thing about this film is that they used no special effects--it was mostly camera angles and lighting that enhanced the "creepiness" of it. oh and for one of the previous posts: yes, part of it was filmed in Canada.
Chrisrex83 3 years ago 2
Thought that you might want the house confusion cleared up, please read my other comment.

Creepy old movie! Love it!

Excellent movie!! It brings something new and exciting to the table of thriller flicks. So many scary movies today are based on gore, and sex. *sighs, and rolls eyes*
George C. Scott is amazing, and you wont regret finding the time to check this movie out!

very good movie love george and his wife is pretty smoking =P

Pretty good little flick. More accurately, it's a 'spiritual mystery' rather than horror. George C. Scott co-stars with his real hottie wife Trish Van Devere.

My math/advisory teacher back in junior high told my classroom about this movie. He said that it was non-violent, but it was still the scariest film.

This movie was horrible, sorry for anyone who likes it or intends to see it; but you're in for a "total disaster" -Destruction.

Somebody had uploaded the entire movie to the site, in like eight parts... I cant find it.

This house did not exist. It was a complete film set. Can you believe it?!
baros62 3 years ago
Hmmm, like the eerie-looking house used in Psycho, Psycho 2, 3, and 4, just a "facade."
SlasherFilmFanatic 3 years ago
I read that it was a real house in canada, but it was destroyed for the fire scene.
fierospeeder 3 years ago 2
I stand by my statement... I read from a very reliable source(though it eludes my memory which publication). I remember being very surprised to find that the house wasn't real but just a false front(house) and nothing but lumber holding it up. I believe the film was filmed in Canada, though. The pulication I read from may have been FANGORIA or the defunct TWILIGHT ZONE magazine. Don't quote me on this.
baros62 3 years ago
I got my info from Internet movie database
either from their info, or someone on the message forum for that movie(on IMDB) stated it was an actual house which is no longer there.
Got done watching the movie yesterday. Wish I had watched it on dvd.
fierospeeder 3 years ago
A false front construction was made in Vancouver for the final fire scene but it was based on a real house in Toronto's Erindale Estates, where many of the exteriors and interiors were shot. Strangely, the Toronto house that was the model burned to the ground, as well, in the early 90's when I was living in one of the coach houses in the neighbourhood. No cause was found for the fire and it is still listed as suspicious.
thegirl44 3 years ago
I dont think they filmed the movie in Toronto, but they did shoot parts of it in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada...Although there are houses like this in Toronto..
Chrisrex83 3 years ago
I love this movie. And this house is so fantastic.I´d heard it´s in Toronto.
