@ATCMusicka NEVER think about price when you want a pet bird. On average, you spend several thousand PER YEAR caring for the bird. Several thousand purchasing it, another several thousand on the cage, and who knows how many toys.

I too have considered a Toucan. There is something magical about their behaviors. For some reason even on their best and happiest day domestic or wild I just can't help but feel sorry for them. I really do not know why. I think I put myself in the postion of dragging that huge beak around with me all day. They sure are beautiful but 'soft bills' can be tricky.

Oh and yes Rikaz, they are definitely clipped wings. He can still fly a bit but with no primary feathers he won't get far! It seems pretty awful to deprive a bird of its greatest ability, but then its either that or stay in a cage 24/7. Clearly the lesser of two evils, and he doesn't hafta worry about getting picked off by a Harpy Eagle, so for this particular bird it's a good life, but as a species they need to be left in the rainforest.

Thanks Linksnake. Birds like some Macaws now only exist in the collections of rich people. Time and time again supposed 'legitimate' dealers are caught exporting protected species. Sure, you can get them from breeders in the US, but that only keeps the market alive for illegal poachers.

If no one, particularly in the US, kept exotic birds or mammals as pets there would be no business for illegal poachers and smugglers to supply. I'd love a Toucan, but its just wrong.

Please people, stop thinking about keeping these birds as pets! I know they are stunning, especially these beautiful tropical birds, but species are disappearing from the wild to supply the pet trade, particularly in the US. Do the right thing and just let them live in the rainforest where they belong!

Wow... stunning! At first I was pretty dissapointed at someone keeping one as a 'pet' and preparing myself for a sick looking bird cramped in a tiny cage but wow... he looks so healthy! I guess you'd have him out a bit because he looks so confident. Such a cheeky little fella, I love it when he jumps from arm to arm! :)

Yes, Pogo's "house" is our house, though she has her "bedroom" where she chooses to sleep, bathe and rest. Her cage door is always open (not when we get help cleaning, since she terrorizes the staff chasing mops). She is fully flighted now, though her wings were clipped for the first 2 years.  As I write, she is insisting that I share the apple and cheese I just brought in as *my* snack.

Toucans are wonderful pets, but they take time, money and patience. Rewarding!

@Rio77 Okay first of all, natural selection made that bird. lol. jk believe what you want. I'm sure there are albino toucans, but they are probably rare, as with any genetic mutation. Albino's don't just pop up out of no where. A certain genetic marker needs to be in place.

These guys beaks are harmless, their beak are very weak and can barely rip fruit appart. The Keel billed ones are more expensive than the others but each breed has its on beauty.

Pogo lives with us and we think she's a girl. She was born at Emerald Forest Bird Gardens to parents who are in a breeding program. She was hand raised by people after she hatched from her egg, so is imprinted on people. This makes her a better pet than most. She must eat a very strict diet of fresh papaya, grapes, blueberries and banana, plus Mazuri Softbill pelleted diet. She is free to roam our house most of the time, is mostly potty-trained, and enjoys playing with balls and spools.
