2 years since I quit that horrible shit. I used to buy cheap smokes and put them in a Peter Stuyvesant pack. I know it sounds pretty pathetic but how many of us wear Levi jeans just for the label when Target jeans would be just as good? Marketing plays a HUGE role in selling this poisonous shit and big tobacco knows it. I am 100% behind plain packaging legislation!!!
John does very few ads, I am indeed pleased to see him lend his name to the cause of puncturing the sanctimonious nonsense the cigarette companies have been peddling lately that they care about freedom and choice and censorship and jobs. Everything except the scourge that kills millions prematurely every year. Nice work Mr Clarke.
What if they did withdraw their product from Australia? Given the cigarettes tax is well over 200% , the Aus govt would have more to lose than the tobacco companies. Might even be worth it to stop the "plain packaging" cancer from spreading to other countries.
@DeafFret This is an argument used over and over again, that governments won't outlaw tobacco completely because they'll lose too much in taxes, or that smokers pay for their health care through all the extra taxes they pay on tobacco. That is nonsense. The health care costs from tobacco FAR outweigh the tax revenue from tobacco purchases; and that doesn't even take into account all the training costs of the healthcare providers to treat smokers
@DeafFret I think you will find the amount spent on healing (and/or burying) smokers more than covers the taxes raised, quite apart from the moral issue of letting the death of one group of people be justified on the grounds that we can make money out of it.
That's like justifying war to promote war industries.
Very clever. Tobacco companies think they are untouchable. There will be mounting pressure from all directions on the Fed Government about plain packaging legislation!
I remember a lot of people not getting this ad when it aired. I think he had to do another shoot explaining that he wasn't really a tobacco exec.

@roguequokka And the proof that it will work is how much the Tobacco companies are spending on advertising against this legislation.
Would you have started smoking in the first place if today's advertising restrictions and plain packagng were in force back then?

@whatmeworrymelbourne Yeah, but we've been claiming Kiwis as our own for years. Sam Neill, Crowded House, Russell Crowe, John Clarke.

Woinderful Mr Clarke. Just one more reason why I have been a fan for all my adult life. I wonder if the tobacco merchants will get the joke?
