With high urbanisation and large global population it will only get more and more reasonable to go in high efficiency farming. Arable land is already pretty much used up, some tropical forest could be cleared to expand it a little - but at what cost? With oil running out transport costs will probably rise, at least until significant breakthrough. I'd say all, or at least most of vegetable production will move into efficient greenhouses in next few decades.
ermm.. too high tech. although i do agree robotic will be the future of farming due to labor intensive. as well as space saving. if we look at current farming most farm land are distant and far away from the city, so able to generate electricity and utilize water efficiently will be the ideal direction for further innovation. it just my opinion. cheers!
The entire O&M cost to grow high value crop is at 20% of wholesale pricing.
Development cost of High tech protected agriculture: pay back is at 6 years vs. ongoing labor intensive open field agriculture, for over 28 years.
Employment: Just 1 worker per shift per greenhouse. Had to invent robotics in lieu of going broke, thus not bringing crying union workers seeking exuberant $s.
too much technology!!!!!!!! just because you add more tec does not mean it is smarter!!!! we should be creating food in ways which the farmer can produce all tools and equipment onsite or cheap/low tec/ local. Why is everyone insistent upon relying upon huge expensive equipment which must be shipped in. Lets do it with our hands and make it all FREEEEEEEEE!!!!! F#$% you profit margins!!!!!!!
We dont need that much efficiency.... it controls us and drives up the cost of getting started... too much overhead can kill a start up business. people use compost heat in low tech greenhouses to grow produce year round in below zero climates... the cost of technology is slavery to large tech companies :)

You obviously are not aware of the benefits of preasure/RH/temperature controlled greenhouses.
Dream on!

This is great. less jobs for the people though.
jordannimrod 1 year ago
@jordannimrod More food though so lower prices for food... A little more tech and none would have to work and food would be almost free!
