Thank you so much for uploading this. Been watching it all the time since I found it here on youtube! Really magnificent. Gonna buy that dvd no matter the cost (except if it is my ears, eyer or arms, cauz then I can't play music)
Are there people here really talking about "losing tradition" in THIS VIDEO? Are you serious? If so, please take the shit out of your ears. This is RHYTHM CHANGES!! Oleo, Lester Leaps In, Dexterity, Anthropology, Moose the Mooche...
Dude, this is a Charlie Parker tune! You can hear the harmony all over Scofield's solo! There are even fun quotes of There Will Never Be, Dexterity...! How much "tradition" do you need?
I'd rather hear him play bebop than funk or jam-band stuff...but that's probably because I'm over 40. My favorite album is Herbie Hancock "Inventions and Dimensions". I guess I like it pretty cerebral.
Why can't we all get along? I am a guitar player, a jazz one, and I hear a lot of swing and "the language" in Sco's playing (true jazz IS a language). Most important though is that he plays from the heart and he swings. Remember the notes are secondary , jazz is in the rhythm. And by the way he does contribute to the language, as in any language there are dialects.
Amazing !!! this is so brilliant .... does anyone know where i could get a chart or tab or any transcription for the solo ??? that would be really helpful !
@morbels At least linux and windows compete for the same thing and are comparable. Jazz and pop aren't even in the same galaxy. Jazz is like soul food, pop music is like old gum stuck the the bottom of a table. Once it has served it's use Pop, like old gum, should be disposed of quickly and if found later shouldn't be touched. Jazz when rediscovered is almost always better for the rest and age.
@jkramer5 For jazz to be fully appreciated, you indeed need time to actually enjoy it. While as (good) pop music immediatly gets to the listener.
I hate how some people force themselves to like jazz, because they think it will make them look more interesting or more educated. They are often bored to death listening to it.
There is a good reason Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't she lovely' is a world hit, and this 'Steeplechase' isn't. And it's not because Stevie's song is an 'old piece of gum'.
@morbels wow, I am a huge jazzman, but I can't agree more with that statement, tho I guess you're trying to make a point out of why you don't like jazz. well dude, sit back and watch over a couple of times, then you might start to get it...
@unsaltedqracker The problem with this is while all the guitar wankers are getting a hard on over Sco, we are losing a little of the true tradition, obviously Sco has spent some time with the oldies but every guitar player out there that keeps trying to emulate Sco's playing forgets where he came from. I have heard all forms of improvisation and I can tell which ones value, what I believe is important. It doesn't seem like Sco and I value the same things like swinging hard, and creating melody.
@mellowmymangtrjz03 Tradition is important, but Jazz(and music) is always going forward. I mean... i bet they started jazz so that they could go somewhere new. I do get what you're saying, but there will always be players that emulate those good ol' players, and a few that break the rules. Both are important, otherwise, it would get boring. It seems too me that you just don't like his playing that much (wich is fine)... it's not about the dangers of loosing tradition. All the best, cheers.
@kfacun Amen bro! Scofield is the living example of your statement, he can play mean old bebop as well as trippier, more electric fusion stuff too. I LOVE JAZZ, IN ALL ITS FORMS. As long as there's good players, music will be good.
All im saying is when it comes down to playing lines that have historical context, why is it that guitar players think they don't have to play idiomatically? Jazz is a language and sometimes in Sco's playing sounds like a kid that listened to too much 70's and 80's jazz and not enough 1950's jazz.
@mellowmymangtrjz03 you sound like a kid that hasn't listened to enough improvisation... it's an artform and he's pushing it to a new place just like all your favorite 70s, 80s, and 50s groups - enjoy his and build your own
I would disagree with you. There are just so many "things" in a persons playing, especially when you're talking about a guy with tons upon tons of experience. That being said, it's clear that it is inaccurate to generalize to the point where one states that he's got "too much 70's and 80's jazz" in his playing. I also disagree with you because I find some of his lines reminiscent of Parker.
Are you kidding?! Sco speaks the language just as much as any guitar or horn player for that matter. Check out 2:30- 2:43. I'm a guitar player too, and I know that a lot of players are faking it, but Sco is certainly not the one to call out.
What a killin' Quartet, can't stop watching this. I had the pleasure & privilege to work w/ Sco in 2008 as a producer for a few of his shows w/ the ScoHorns in Brazil. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met. Bill Stewart's also real nice-they both got great sense of humor - watching him play drums @ close range is something else, man...
