Sam Gamgee is my favourite character in all fiction. I love it when Frodo is crawling inch by inch, and Sam says, "I can't carry the ring, but I can carry you." And when he thinks Frodo is dead, for a moment he considers throwing himself off a cliff... then thinks, "but that would be to do nothing, not even grieve." Tolkien says that when he and his comrades went to war (WW1) only one of his close friends survived. I think that's what makes this friendship so profound.
