If Dr. Shih is HALF the doctor he is a musician, then his patients are very blessed indeed. After hearing his thrilling rendition on YouTube of the Bach Prelude & Fugue in F minor (WTC II), I've become obsessed with him. He's incredibly gifted -- such beautiful innate musicality and taste, and powerful yet sensitive playing. Bravo, doctore!!
Terrific playing, of course, but the quality of the recorded sound is criminal. So much reverberation! So little bass! An excellent performance thus comes across as muffled, muddy and almost mono-dynamic.
I can hear through the electronically generated fog, however, because I have heard this pianist recorded under more favorable circumstances, and know how fine he really is.
I would wish only that he didn't begin slowly and then accelerate into the center of almost every phrase.
I've posted better quality audio files at my Reverbnation site, if you're interested. The link can be found at the bottom of the bio on my channel page.
Absolutely stunning, exquisite playing! It's really so arbitrary who's a 'professional' & who's an 'amateur'... You understand this complex piece so deeply, I'm totally convinced. Beautiful. And your technique, OMG - that coda is HARD (but I'd never know... ;)
Indeed ! I was there during the final, he was great and won the 1st price (both public and jury). Very well deserved. I taped the whole final with my Nagra. Di Casoli was also great, I hesitated between Shi & Casoli, so I didn't vote. The level, even during the semi-final, was already very high and impressive.
