I love listening to this song when I'm upset - it's just pure bad ass girl power :) and Judy's voice is AMAZING. Makes me feel so much better every time :)
the lyrics extoll such stark, total disillusionment - heartbreaking. sort of like saying to yourself "it's as bad as you thought, baby - now learn to live with it!"
Neil Young had a similar lyric: "I was thinking about what a friend had said, I was hoping it was a lie" -- that was the Cold War for you, and one irrevocable side of life...
if the tempo was sped up for recording purposes (as is typically the case w/ most Broadway cast albums) i'd hate to think how much slower the tempo could get
i think she'd makea better Glinda. she has a very large range, but i think that she sounds better at the higher end of her range. however she is awesome here
LOL....LOL.... you have no idea what you're talking about! LOL...I just think that is one of the funniest statements... Do you even have any clue how huge those songs are..the vocal requirements to even pull off those songs? Shoshana Bean has a range that matches Mariah Carey's and she even wound up with vocal strain at the end of her run. So If that's low quality then I strive to be the lowest quality there possibly is! Do some research :)
Both Judy and Elaine do well at this song, but Elaine kinda gives the role a little more vocal personality, whereas Judy here sounds just like she did when she recorded Pocahontas.
Dont get me wrong, both women are astounding, and I onyl wish i could sing half as well as either of them, but i do prefer Elaine Page's version.
I think the UK version is better because the leads were better cast. This sounds like Pacahontas singing chess and it just doesn't have the flair of the 80's version. Judy is a great performer but she is a poor choice for Florence.
Damn straight! They did it at my high school and I've loved it ever since....probably my fave musical after Les Mis! Great stuff...so sad though! But that's what makes it great....bring on the angst!
British version is better, imho, simply because the British performer is more capable of conveying emotions through the song. This one just sounds like she's singing some song, the British one sings it as if it's her own thoughts.
Here is my pronouncement on the best Florence. I saw Chess, with Elaine Page, one week after it premiered in London and again a year later. I saw the U.S. national touring cast when it first went around. But, without question, Judy Kuhn's renditions are the best. And I don't think that Elaine Paige, who I admire as well, ever recorded "Someone Else's Story," which was not in the original production. Thank goodness it was added later!
i just realized i know her daughter, anna. we used to go to acting class together and she goes to the school around the corner from me with my friends. and dude, she looks exactly like her mom.
Great voice and love this song, but not a patch on the original Elaine Paige version. Elaine was the original Florence Vassy when the show opened in London and Judy opened the show in New York. Quite different voices.
Not sure about the Julia Murney comment - think her version of this song is great (but still not as good as Elaine!)
There was a video, of sorts, called "Chess Moves." It has three or four music videos made by the original cast, incuding Elaine Page's version of this song. I bet I have the only Beta copy still in existence! I know it was sold in London in PAL format and could be found, with some searching, on VHS in the U.S.
I'm pretty sure there's a way, since I've seen people plagiarize videos. Go ask on the comments to a featured video and you'll probably have a better chance at someone telling you how to do it.
Thank you so much for posting this song...I have the original musical recording of CHESS...I have been thinking about getting the Broadway recording as well...after hearing Judy Kuhn`s version of "Nobody`s Side" -- I do not need to "think" anymore; I will be getting the CD now! ^_^
